Variety has confirmed LatinoReview’s rumor that Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to play Freddy Kruger in Platinum Dunes’ A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. Also, BloodyDisgusting has learned that Kyle Gallner (The Haunting In Connecticut) is in final talks to play Quentin, the podcast host and Johnny Depp character from the original Wes Craven film.

Producer Brad Fuller had initially denied the Heley casting reports, saying: “I can absolutely deny [this rumor]. We have not chosen a Freddy Krueger we’re not even negotiating with anyone yet.” Which again proves that you can’t trust anything producers say during the initial casting stages.

After being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, a pre-school gardener/caretaker named Freddy returns for revenge against the children, now 18 years old, that accused him of sexual abuse. But was Freddy a child molester or was he falsely accused? This is the central question and main addition to the film’s plot. The reboot is also supossedly scarier in tone, as the film’s producers have said Freddy doesn’t joke around.

Haley was nominated for an Academy Award for playing a child molester in Little Children, and next plays a crazy mental patient in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Shutter Island. Most readers probably know him as Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen. To me, Haley possesses the perfect balance of creepiness and intelligence needed for the character of Freddy. What do you guys think?

    Perfect

    And first, biatches...
  • Are you the author of Digby's blog?
  • Never seen anyone saying this before.. What a stupid trend. What are you? 13 years old?
  • Never seen anyone saying this in here before.. What a stupid trend. What are you? 13 years old?

    Hey, why the hell not...
  • AWESOME. This film has a prayer now. If only Friday the 13th had proven that Dunes actually wanted to continue the lineage of these films instead of just stamping out tickets. Maybe he will lend the production its necessary weight. Imagine that, a former child actor actually HELPING a movie.

Friday the 13th is a franchise built off of just stamping out films for ticket sales. Hell, the first one was made just to make a quick buck off of Halloweens sucess.

This new Nightmare has officially got me interested however, Haley is a fantastic choice to say the least. Thank god they didnt go with some awful no name actor.
  • Yeah but the filmmakers had a sizable conception of the flicks worth beyond that. I would say Friday the 13th is more the exploitation pic and that from its inception Elmstreet was attempting to break new ground in the horror genre, by delivering a very high concept visual style, and succeeded.
  • J.Kerr
Agreed. Nightmare on Elm Street was a fantastic and innovative movie. I could have cared less about Dunes remaking Friday the 13th, cause honestly there was nothing they could have really ruined that the series hadn't already ruined.

Remaking the original Nightmare needs to be taken seriously. And im glad theyre showing some insight beyond money, and this casting is a good first sign for this movie.

What about The Bad News Bears??? He was great in that too!!! It's true that Friday the 13th didn't bring anything new to the series, but in its defense, at least it stuck to the tradition of the originals; which weren't very good in the first place. Nightmare on Elm Street was always a much better concept than FT13 so I think Dunes will have plenty to work with, and God willing, be able to pull off something entertaining.

He was great in Little Children too by the way.

It's hard to say if he'll be good, because we don't yet know what the director/producers will expect of him. More importantly, he took a 13 year absence from acting and only has a few credits to his name in the last few years. I guess he's still kind of a mystery, which might work out in his favor. I imagine that fans would put a lot more pressure, via expectations, on a more recognizable actor.
  • Justin Craig
Rorschach was the shit!!! Don't doubt JEH. I guess you must be jealous.
  • Jackie Earle Haley is a great choice but I'm afraid that Freddy Kreuger will sound like Batman :(

    1,2 Freddy's coming for you
    3,4 Better lock your door
    5,6 Get a Crucifix
    7,8 Better Stay Up Late
    9,10 RACHEL!!!!!!!!!!!
  • as long as MICHAEL BAY doesn't interfere, then the remake should be good.
  • Wow.
  • I really hope they go in the direction of Asiain horror flicks and make this scary as hell. I hate how American horror movies just try to gross you out more than scare you...
    But, yeah...Go Jackie Earle Haley!
  • Zinc
He is a bit short, though. Freddy was always average height.
  • Good to know. Looking forward to this now.
  • I have no interest in this movie but I thikn its good casting.
  • John
Great actor. He is the perfect choice, which gives me hope this film might actually turn out better than expected.
  • Sounds like a perfect fit to me. Kind of excited to see what they can do with him as Freddy.
  • Jackie Earle Haley is the man.
  • This is just wonderful news, this remake could be incredible!!!!!!!!!
  • Goobity
Don't get too excited. It's still being directed by Samuel Bayer. His past accomplishments include mediocre music videos for sad bands like Blink 182 and Green Day.

    Whoopy-fuckin'-doo.
  • Tap Zepol
Wow, I'm interested in a horror remake. Who knew?
  • I'm excited, but its hard not seeing Robert England's name up there.
  • Agreed. If it had to be someone other than Bob, Haley is a damn fine choice.
  • this is a high point of this project. I don't see why they didn't hire this guy earlier. This movie might be good enough to watch now.
  • Andrew
This gives a lot of hope for the movie, indeed. I also like the ambiguity they've added to the character as well.
  • FUCK YES!

    Kruger's Diary, October 15th, 1985 -

Dog carcass in alley this morning. Tired tread on burst stomach. The neighborhood is afraid of me. Oh wait, no they're not. They burnt me alive in my house. :(
  • Kote_
    Ya ah, Dukes
  • still.... i had 0 interest in this reboot. now that haley is going to be in it, i am almost certain to see it unless it gets absolutely horrible reviews.
  • also David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Ozzy, Ramones, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Rolling Stones, Blind Melon and Garbage...I think the man is just as qualified as Michael Bay and David Fincher were prior to their move from Music Videos/Commericals to film...
  • I'm very ecstatic with this casting news. Thanks for reporting guys =D. They couldn't of made a better choice in my book.

I also like this new tone they are planning to take with this film (adding ambiguity to Freddy's sexual assaults on children, and making the character more serious and menacing).
  • Haley was great in Little Children and had the best performance in Watchmen....greatest casting choice! let's hope the supporting cast is just as strong and we get a serious horror film...rather than a "wink" to the audience remake....LatinoReview's script review sounded ok until I heard the guitar hero kill..it's a bit odd that they would write a product placement in the actual script...

a side note Amanda Crew from Sex Drive was rumored to be playing Nancy...anyone like her in Sex Drive?
  • interesting casting, but i still dont care much for this reboot
  • _spinster_
don't know who this guy is, he better do a good job!!!!
  • thefan
I'm so friggin happy right now, I can only hope the producers and the director of this film don't F--k it up now.
  • thefan
    Hahaha!!
  • Jake
I thought that whole movie was hilarious, and I thought she was pretty good.
  • First he molests children. Then he kills those who molest children. Now Jackie Earle Haley kills children in Nightmare on Elm Street
  • There you go Watchmen (the movie) haters, some good stuff came out of the adaptation wether you like it or not :D
  • While this remake is devastating, of all the casting options out there for Freddy, this one probably makes the most sense.
  • Excellent! Finally he'll have a horror film other than Maniac Cop 3 on his resume!!
  • Akltraz22
"Don't get too excited. It's still being directed by Samuel Bayer. His past accomplishments include mediocre music videos for sad bands like Blink 182 and Green Day. "

Yea but he also did Nirvana "Smells like Teen Spirt" and that kinda changed the face of rock as we know it...so give the guy a chance.
  • Yay! Good news. I have faith that the film is not going to suck.
  • harshtruth
the past couple of years brave directors are tackling projects such as recreating old horror movies like friday the 13th, holloween and now a nightmare on elm street. theres one thing all of these have in common........ there not good movies. common directors you should have learned one of the major rules in the bussines.! (LEAVE CLASSICS ALONE). your not gonna make a classic movie better it just cant be done. so i wish you would have learned by now. i hope rob zombie did (director of halloween). because he's been trying to make a good horror flick since the beggining of his carreer. you might watch and love horror movies but, you shouldent direct them......... sorry.
