ice-age-3

It has been a rough week for 20th Century Fox: First a huge batch of their Slumdog Millionaire DVDs get shipped without special features, then a workprint of one of their major tentpole releases gets leaked onto the internet. To that list, you can now add on one more mess: THR reported this past Tuesday that Fox was doing an about face in its agreement to co-finance the rollout of 3-D screens with theater exhibitors, refusing to pay the fees associated with the use of 3-D glasses (fees that can run over $1 million per film, in order to purchase and pass out the glasses). Now exhibitors, who have already spent millions converting their systems to display 3-D films, are pissed.

According to an article on EW, one exhibitor fumed:

I’m already paying fees to RealD for the systems. I’m paying to put in the silver screens and I’m paying to train employees to run the product. To come in at this point and say they aren’t going to pay for the glasses, yet they want all the upside of the revenue, is ridiculous.

Furthermore, Regal Theaters, the nation’s largest theater chain, is threatening to show Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (out in theaters on July 1st) in 2-D only. Patrick Goldstein from the LA Times speculates that if indeed Regal refused to show the 3-D version of the film, “Fox could return fire by telling Regal that it will give its 3-D prints to AMC and Cinemark, the country’s second- and third-largest theater chains, giving Regal’s rivals a competitive advantage.” However, a FOX rep claims, “No exhibitor has said they don’t want to play Ice Age in 3-D. All we are doing is working out the issues.”

I’ve never much liked the Ice Age films, but there’s no question that they’re a major cash cow for FOX, with the first two films raking in over $1 billion worldwide for the studio. With 3-D revenues making up over 40% of Dreamworks recent monster hit, is this one expense cut that FOX can afford to make?

  • Fox is doing a reallyyyy good job making us hate them even more!

    @ BROOMSTICK

Congratulations on finally getting to 100p. I thought you'd never get there the way you are always pissing people off. ;)

Why would a broomstick be feeling any emotion at all?

    you suck

“Fox could return fire by telling Regal that it will give its 3-D prints to AMC and Cinemark, the country’s second- and third-largest theater chains, giving Regal’s rivals a competitive advantage.”

But who says THEY are willing to pay for the glasses? It's a bum deal, FOX.
  • To recap, Fox likes to make money, while screwing over everyone. Go FOX!
  • Fox keeps making more and more idiotic decisions. It sucks seeing a once talented studio turn into a complete joke.
  • Palmer
Oh Fox, will you ever learn to not piss people off?
  • Seriously. I'm not a big fan of broadly painted hatred toward faceless corporate targets, especially since I essentially work for "the man," but I find myself now actually saying out loud to friends, "No, fuck that movie. I hate Fox." It's like they hired all the people in bars with tall spiked up hair and popped collars to fill their PR department.
  • 20th Century Fox really needs to sit down with the people making these awful choices of dealing with audiences and theater owners....they really don't care about their films as long as they can shovel them into DVD sales...I wouldn't be surprised if Fox's movies don't start to end up direct to DVD...since the quality and box office calls for it...
  • it would be great if they were actually trying....also I don't believe this company even cares what the public and moviegoers think of it...they'll keep making shit and hope it sells...

While I'm sure not many of us here are going to be worrying about seeing Ice Age in 3D unless we have kids (or are genuinely curious), the real problem here is Avatar.

I know we haven't heard a lot about Avatar, but from what we can gather, Fox have uncharacteristically not been as involved in Cameron's pic as they have been in any number of their other big pictures, so really, this is just their way of screwing that film over indirectly. Hopefully we'll still get to see it in 3D, if anything, so we can see if Avatar's 3D is as amazing as Cameron is saying it is, but when Fox pulls a dick move like this, one really does wonder.

So who is responsible for Fox's horrendous decisions, is it Rothman, a board, Murdoch?
  • Rothman mainly. Things started going down hill when he became CEO.

"Under Rothman's watch, Twentieth Century Fox has met criticism for having their blockbuster films (e.g. the Fantastic Four 4 and X-Men films) run under two hours in order to fit in more theater showings and for, under his tenure, greenlighting less cerebral films in favor of films with more commercial appeal."

  • I think Fox is in this classic mindset that the world revolves around them and their products. They need some young and savvy people working their mechanics and oiling their machine if they want to stay in the game.
  • lol, welcome to the world of corporations.
  • 3d 2d who cares?
  • i completely agree.
  • Fox, you are retarded.
  • Fir3Wolf
I don't even really know what to say about this whole mess. Shame on you Fox.
  • Additional bad comment, Fox.

    way to advance cinema, fox.

no wonder your films get leaked behind your back. because you deserve it so much.
im surprised anyone bothered to download it considering its a fox product.
  • dagreenman18
It's like they are activley trying to lose vast amount of money. You do not fuck with the people who show your movies. thats a one way ticket to lost revenue. And im glad they will lose money from Wolverine leak. it was terrible anyway.
  • Troy
Oh, wow, check out Fox's new loathsome attempt to save face.

    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40652

    Words fail.
  • If Regal follows through on their threat it could be a boon to other chains and smaller theater companies much like Regal's decision to boycott Rush Hour 2. Every mom and pop theater had it for it's monster opening weekend. The silver lining here, for Fox and other studios, could be a rush to upgrade to digital by theaters that typically wouldn't do so due to their competitive imbalance for first run films with Regal. When you factor in that the average movie goer will take their frustrations out on the theater instead of Fox itself it seems like a potentially shrewd, albeit dickish, move.

Fox made Fight Club. That's something.....
  • Goobity
Jim Uhls (screenwriter) and David Fincher (Director) made Fight Club. Fox partly financed it and distributed it.
Without creative talent, all Fox had was the rights to a book and a pile of money.
Give credit where it's due, eh?
  • I've never gotten over the Parker Lewis Can't Lose cancellation myself.
  • freemachine
Won't be long now before FOX will be asking the government/taxpayers for a corporate bailout. The audacity of those fuckers is beyond comprehension.
  • "20th Century Fox: We Excel at Pissing Everyone Off"
  • Fox must be ran by a bunch of idiots. It's like they don't care what their fans think. Does anyone know if Magnolia/Magnet is owned by Fox? Because it seems their one in the same. I'm starting to feel a bit better about Fox losing money over the Wolverine work print.
  • freemachine
No kidding. I don't imagine there are a lot of people who have sympathy for FOX regarding the Wolverine leak. As StarBlazer101 aptly put it: "Karma's a bitch"
  • I will definitely agree with what StarBlazer101 said.
  • GezzyEff
Hey fuck you dude. Releasing Fight Club was a ballsy move, especially ten years ago. Without Fox Fincher and Jim Uhls(silly last name) might never have gotten to make the movie at all.
  • How was releasing Fight Club a ballsy move? Fincher already had Se7en under his belt and was known as a great director. The fact that it was Fox and not New Line or Miramax is neither here nor there, all Fox did was put their name on a great movie and distributed it. I have never and will never consider Fight Club a Fox release...why? Because it was a fucking great movie that Fincher and Uhls created, from a fantastic book. So fuck off Fox
  • mikeyclt
    Don't talk about FIGHT CLUB
  • dxr
Jeez Fox. Non-stop with you. I can see this coming down to the consumer AGAIN. 3D tickets are already higher priced in some areas. Now you may have to purchase the glasses as well.

Personally I am not against this ideal as long as you are not forced to purchase them every time. As in, you can bring your previously purchased glasses with you. Would cut down on a lot of the disposable waste as well.

That said... They should definitely remain free with price of entry.
  • The Regal's in my area that have converted make you pay for the glasses each time even if you brought your old pair with you. The thing that's confusing to me is if you have to pay for the glasses what are Fox and Regal bitching at each other about? Aren't they going to get that money back via glass sales? Or is this just a pissing match between a lame studio and the big chain on the block?
  • dxr
Good point. Maybe they are covering a nominal amount of the actual cost?

Who knows. I am not really upset at this as much as Fox's continual point of being at the center of all things fucked up these days.
  • 20th Century Fox really needs to sit down with the people making these awful choices of dealing with audiences and theater owners....they really don't care about their films as long as they can shovel them onto DVDs/Blurays...I wouldn't be surprised if Fox's movies don't start to end up direct to DVD...since the quality and box office calls for it...they should get out of the blockbuster business and stick with Searchlight
  • it surprises me because I would have thought that a major studio like Fox would care about their reputation and try to please the public (in order to make more $$$) but you're right.. fuck 'em
  • if they can't get behind this 3D film...how many theaters will actually want to be ready for the 3D version of Avatar...I'm hearing the 2D will be just as great so I think Michael Bay's statement might be true...it may just be a gimmick and should be only used in horror flicks...
  • Weyland_Yutani
This is exactly what I don't get. These glasses need to be set up as either "rentals" or outright purchases by the audience member. You buy them for the increased cost and keep them for the next film, or return them after the film.

I don't really understand who should be bitching at who, but it stands to reason that if this 3D thing is going to have any wings, this "cost" needs to get ironed out. I'm personally for people purchasing their own glasses for a one-time fee. Both the studio and the theatres are screwing over everyone for overcharging on every 3D film. It seems to me that they both want to just continue to charge higher prices for 3D films. THAT is where people's frustrations should be directed.
  • shadow
Hell, that could be a new area of revenue for the theaters, high-end 3D glasses that you bring with you to the theater.
  • "it surprises me because I would have thought that a major studio like Fox would care about their reputation"

It seems as though Fox hasn't cared about the general public for quite some time. Of course I'm talking about the quality of their films as of late. They tend to ruin good things and haven't stopped doing it yet. It's about time they stopped doing something or else someone's going to keep leaking out their money makers, AKA Wolverine movie.
  • WOW GO FIGURE FOX IS FUCKING SOMETHING ELSE UP NOW. Why the fuck wouldnt they pay for the 3-D glasses for THEIR 3-D movie? When the hell is this piece of shit company going to finally go under? Fox has not made a decent movie in a long ass time, all they do is make watered down shit thats "Family-Friendly" and all those movies blow! Taken was a great fim, unfortunately Fox distributed it. Oh and since were on the topic of Fox being total fuck ups, way too go on that leak with Wolverine, nice job keeping that thing under wraps, you worthless fucks. I hope that soon I will read an article on here that Fox finally has gone under and all their top execs shot themselves.
