twidvd-slumdogmillionaireA few weeks ago we reported about how FOX was planning to remove the special features from the rental versions of its DVDs. Understandably, this upset a lot of people, including DVD retailers themselves. For consumers, the idea that there would be two separate versions of a DVD out there, on top of the double dips, special super editions, and all those other revenue-generating screw-you-out-of-your money gimmicks, was just a bit much for people to handle, and on the retailer side, it promised to create a lot more work for everyone involved.

It now appears as though consumers are getting screwed in a completely unforeseen way: People are purchasing DVDs of Slumdog Millionaire off places like Amazon and finding that the special features advertised on the back of the box are nowhere to be found.

Cinematical reports receiving anecdotal evidence that a bunch of Slumdog DVDs have been completely borked, stories which are corroborated by a quick look at the reviews on Amazon’s Slumdog DVD page. Amazon has issued a notice to all purchasers of the disc and notified customers of an exchange program:

DVD Alert: We are aware that special features were missing from a number of Slumdog Millionaire DVDs. This issue does not occur on the Blu-ray version. Fox has set up a hotline telephone number (1-888-223-4FOX) for those consumers who may have purchased a DVD version that does not contain special features. Upon calling the hotline, these consumers will be able to have their disc replaced for one containing special features. Fox regrets any inconvenience this has caused.

There’s no direct evidence (yet) that Fox’s recent boneheaded move surrounding DVD special features had anything to do with this, but if I were a betting man, I’d bet all the money in my pockets that it played some part in this debacle.

Discuss: Have you had bad luck with a Slumdog DVD? If so, tell us your experience in the comments.

  • good grief.

The Wolverine leak is karma for this.
  • Don't mess with special features!

Great job Fox! Just another way to prove what type of power house you are. If it weren't for Fight Club or Aliens, I could give two fucks about this company.
  • Sean
This isn't new, it's just being publicized now guys. See also: The Dark Knight One-Disc Special Featureless Edition. It's all about phasing out the old and bringin' in the Blu.

I posted this in the previous post you did on Fox's rental dvds, but it bears repeating... I purchased the DVD from Best Buy yesterday. No special features (and I was really looking forward to Danny Boyle's commentary). I saw the number on Amazon's site and called it... rang 10 times and then auto-hung-up on me. Good job Fox! Nothing better than having to try the number repeatedly TO GET WHAT I ALREADY PAID FOR!

I can't see a way that this screw-up isn't related to their new rental DVD policy. I have to imagine that Danny Boyle and Christian Colson are quite pissed. At least, I would be if I were them.

Ok... I finally got through on the Fox hotline. I was on-hold for a little under 10mins, but when I got connected, the process was relatively painless. They ask you a couple quick proof-of-purchase questions and then take your address to send you a new DVD. They then give you a website link where you can watch the bonus features in the meantime.
  • I hope the person who came up with this gets fired. The entire idea is just ridiculous, and now this happens? If I'm a consumer, I should never have to call a hotline and wait for a new copy because someone higher up is a fucking bonehead. I hope Fox learns their lesson and stops the shenanigans. And I hope they have someone crawling boards/blogs to see consumer attitude--Fox, if you're reading this, I think you're looking officially losing me as a customer.
  • I still think it's funny that Warner Brothers and Fox are so eager to flush the market with Blu-rays when Sony stands to make the most from the transition and the Columbia DVD's are flawless.
  • how much money is Fox honestly saving with this process?
  • Dan
I picked up Slumdog yesterday and found there was only the Trailers; no other listed extras anywhere to be seen, so I took it back this morning and the retailer double-checked other copies and are now taking their copies off the shelf. For a company all about the profit, FOX just doesn't get it.
  • Damn you fox
    Hahah well said.
  • Fox has no clue, Special Features are a big part of my decision when choosing which DVD to buy
  • At least Fox admits they messed up and are actually replacing the discs...unlike the Let the Right One In DVD...
  • Tom
I somehow missed the Let the Right One In hubbub. What happened?
  • The original LTROI DVD being sold had different subtitles compared to those seen in theaters; many have said that the new subtitles are either dumbed down or lack the subtlety of the theatrical ones. They released a new DVD with the theatrical subtitles but refused to allow exchanges of the original DVD.

    How absurd.

...maybe it's all a big April Fool's Day joke?

    Not funny, though.

I was planning on heading over to my local Best Buy to purchase it yesterday, but ended up not being able to. Seeing this, it appears it worked out for the best!

I wonder how long it will take for this to be fixed.

As I see it, this is total justification for downloading the leaked Wolverine workprint. With it's unfinished special effects (including visible cable work and untexturized CG) the workprint is the closest thing to a Behind the Scenes making of the film and I say that it qualifies as a Special Feature. If Fox continues this trend, you likely won't get any special features on the Wolverine DVD, so download it why you can.

    FUCK YOU FOX!
  • Palmer
FOX has fucked up on something, nothing new.
  • Blu-ray or just DVD?
  • agreed. *sobbing*

So, in review: After a horrid 2008 that involved a whopping 3 movies to break 100 million dollars (more tellingly, none of those hit in the summer), instead of making good movies or making sure said movies got advertisements and support, they not only killed special features on various DVDs (which honestly probably cost more money to change than to just keep it normal), they're alienating their fanbase by fucking up and selling said featureless DVDs as "Special Editions". And now their big summer tentpole, starring the "Sexiest Man Alive" and primed to rejunenate their sluggish profits, leaks.

Bravo, Fox. I will no longer support you, because you are fucking the consumer with every move you make.

(Someone check the Marley & Me DVDs... this could spread further than expected)
  • I was so pissed at that... its not my fault I think BluRay is a joke that will flop out
  • jtf
According to Amazon, it's just the DVD version of Slumdog and not the Blu-ray.
  • King_Mob
I've been following the comments on this post and thought I'd add my two cents. Like some of you, I purchased a copy of "Slumdog Millionaire" and discovered that it only had trailers under Special Features. I called the hotline posted on Amazon.com and Fox Home Entertainment's Web site. The man on the phone asked for the last two digits underneath the bar code on the back of the case. He also wanted to know the color of "A Danny Boyle FIlm" on the actual DVD (which was white). After giving him my address, he told me that a replacement would be sent in the mail. Unfortunately, he couldn't tell me when that would be. Ugh! On the plus side, you can view some of the special features at www.slumdogmillionairedvd.com/bonusfeatures. (The link goes to a page at Fox's online store.) I hope this helps!

    Cheers!
  • this sucks
yes you jus have to keep trying it took me a while to finally get through and once u get through then u have to wait another 10 minutes until "the next available representative" will talk to u n mail u another copy

These schemes to boost revenues by altering media seem to backfire. Remember that debacle Sony Music faced a few years ago when some of their music CDs would silently install anti-piracy software on the user's computer? Rather than make money, all Sony accomplished was the introduction of a security threat (rootkit) on their customer's PCs. They faced a product recall, had to provide software patches to fix the PCs, got sued up the ass, endured a lot of bad press and ultimately abandoned the entire copy-protection scheme.

I wonder how extensive the Slumdog DVD problem is and how much this will end up costing Fox in the end. I think if this happens a second time they may find themselves under pressure to abandon the practice altogether.

Lol after reading this i immediately checked my copy and sure enough...no special features so i called the hot line and its now fixed lol.
  • Seems like the printed sleeves that were supposed to be used for the edition WITH features got inserted into covers and shipped with the rental discs, lacking features. Of course, if FOX didn't have so many variations on a single movie they wouldn't have walked into this mess.
  • Now this in my opinion warrants some anger, Dave Chen. I'm going to check my unopened copy right now.
  • Really, guys... in a few hours i was going to go out and find this dvd, and now once again i have reservations.... sigh... what is the world coming to

update: i went to wallmart and got screwed with a bad copy, got a new one there and had them open it and check. they had a bad stock and im sure they are doing nothing about it now

I can confirm that disks shipped to the Target in Burbank (L.A.) California are missing the special features as well. My GFs mom apparently bought the disk today and I asked my GF to load the DVD and tell me what she saw. There's apparently an option for Special Features, but when she selected it she said the only thing available were trailers. She'll return the disk to Target tomorrow and I'll post back with an update.
  • ladyE
i bought mine from a target in florida...no special features.
i called the hotline and spoke to someone and within 5 minutes everything was done and they are shipping me out a new one.
  • Miranda
I'm pleased with the response FOX has given to its costomers.. i don't see how they could have done anymore to right their wrong in this case. the hotline process was quick and painless.. i was connected and off the phone within about 10 minutes.
  • jtf
Quick update on my end... bought the dvd (no SF) on Tuesday, called the hotline yesterday (Wednesday), and today I got an email saying my new DVD has been shipped from Fox via UPS Next Day Air. I'll get the replacement disc tomorrow. Not bad for a major screw-up on their end.

Hopefully they didn't send me another one missing the special features, LOL.
  • AJ Pupster
I got mine at Target in Oceanside, Ca on Tuesday. No special features. I liked the script it came with though. That was a cool idea. Glad to hear people have been getting through on the hotline. Seems like quite a pain, but at least they're owning up to it.

I pre-ordered my DVD from Amazon and received it Monday in the mail (one day before official release). Monday night received an email from Amazon giving details of the mishap. I called FOX Tuesday morning (after confirming that my DVD did not have the special features).....I was able to connect with someone within 30 seconds....she took my info and asked several questions from the DVD case (the info requested seems to vary for each person). She said she didn't have any info as to when I would receive the replacement. Today (Friday April 3), the doorbell rings and UPS has delivered the replacement! (I live in Denver) I was surprised it arrived so quickly. The new DVD has the special features. There is a letter asking that the old DVD be returned in the pre-paid envelope, which was enclosed, at my convenience. Although, I don't know how they could insist you return the old one since I didn't buy it directly from FOX. All-in-all, a good experience from a company that screwed up, but took care of the problem right away.
  • I just bought the DVD and found no special features as well.
Fox has a website setup now,
slumdogdvd.orderassistance.com to get you set up with a new disk.
The most ridiculous part is they ask you to identify several quotes on the packaging (maybe to make sure its not theft, maybe to identify which ones they accidentally shipped).
One of the crappy quotes is
"He'll find out if you can have your cake and eat it too!"

Are you kidding me?! One of the best indie films of the year and thats the tag line you're going to give it!
  • Tanisha
I got mine @ Best Buy in Grand Forks, ND, also with no features, unless you count the trailers. I don't get the whole idea behind removing the specials, stupid! I think we pay enough for DVDs that cost a whole 50 cents to make.... And you know this movie made way more then they expected.

Anyway, I called the hotline and they directed me to go to:
    www.slumdogdvd.orderassistance.com
If you answer the questions according to the defected DVD, they will send the new disc within 2-3 business days.

Whos to say you can't just go in there and put the same answers in for every member of the family and everyone be sent these new DVDs. Is it just the features they are sending or the whole disc with movie??

It will be interesting to see!
  • Thanks!
  • I got my replacement DVD after filling out the forms on the website listed above. It arrived in two business days, and that's shipping from California to Canada! The new disc is a complete disc with the film and special features. They request that you send the featureless disc back with an included postage-paid envelope. Problem is, I didn't get a postage-paid envelope. I'll have to call and clear that part up.
  • No Features
Utah Wal Marts have bad copies. Guess that serves me right for shopping there in the first place.
  • EdM
The 1-888 number redirects you to a 1014578# that is a 3$ per minute phone number. Are you kidding me? I think Walmart has an issue with taking back opened dvd's - I dont want this copy without the extras.
  • EdM
just filled out the online form in the comment above, ill see what happens...
  • This is standard practice for rentals in the UK. Most of the newer films I received through Lovefilm are vanillas even though the retail is loaded with features. Since both are being released on the same day it's a way of keeping the two separate though I expect in a few years, perhaps sooner, films will be released at the cinema and vanilla dvd/blueray on the same day with the extras laden special edition coming later.

Interesting additional note: only when Alfonso Cuaron was visiting his local dvd shop did he find out that the first retail release of 'Children of Men' was a vanilla. After shouting at the company a lot, they released the special edition super quickly and set up a scheme in which people who'd bought the vanilla could simply take it back into the shop and trade it in, no questions asked.

As for the other thing: dvd authoring houses mess up all of the time; I rented a foreign language dvd the other week and though there was a subtitles option on the disc, they'd forgotten to unclude them. For a while the Doctor Who archive releases in the UK were filled with these kinds of cock ups, with extras left off, the wrong version of an episode being encoded and in one case scenes being put on in the wrong order.
  • Do they ever? Sad, but true.
  • 2nd comment now. I just received a copy for my birthday today.......and sure enough--no special features. So now, a gift that I have to do this for. And thank goodness for this blog, because otherwise, I'd probably have a hard time figuring out how to fix this. It's a shame, because I bet a bunch of people are in this boat and are getting the shaft because they don't know how to solve the problem.
  • Ella Nicole
I was not aware of this until I bought my DVD at Borders because of the special features...
When I realize there is no additional features, I was hella mad and question HOW THE HELL did this happen
Anyways they have a website now to replace the DVD...Hope it works out
  • redintheface
I bought mine at Amazon, and am returning to Amazon. Amazon's normal procedure is to offer an exchange, but they are not offering that right now "NOTE: We don't offer an exchange program at this time. However, you're welcome to return the item for a refund and then place a new order for the item you want in exchange. Also note that we aren't able to offer policy exceptions or special handling in response to comments entered on this page."
