Star Trek Sequel Announced

Paramount Pictures is moving forward with development on a Star Trek sequel, hiring Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay. Lindelof produced the first film but has been brought on to reteam with Kurtzman and Orci, with whom he is currently co-scripting DreamWorks’ Cowboys and Aliens.  Kurtzman told Variety that they will wait to see what fan reaction is to the first film, which hits theaters on May 8th, before proceeding.

“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

They are hoping to have a completed script by Christmas, which would likely mean a summer 2011 release. No decision has been made yet on whether JJ Abrams will return to direct, but he will at least produce.

Of course, the writing deal announcement doesn’t guarantee a green light. If the film somehow underperforms, the sequel won’t happen. It seems like Paramount thinks they have a huge hit in their hands. The studio is holding the film’s premiere more than a month before the film’s domestic release, which is certainly a vote of confidence.

I'll save them the trouble. Thumbs down!
  • Stfu, and let'em make the movie
  • I saw this coming with the two not returning to Transformers 3 and J.J./Bad Robot's deal with Paramount....I expect this to become a trilogy if the first movie does well...I can see J.J. making two more films by 2013

I can't say I'm a massive Trek fan..I did enjoy TNG and some of the movies but a lot of the spin-offs ruined the quality and scale of the series...from what I've seen they've really made this universe more than just a television show...I think it was a great move to get away from the television series and reinvent the whole thing...

  • This isn't going to get the normal "another sequel" thought from me.

That universe is sooooo vast they could tell stories forever...
  • If the first one is good then sure, I want to see more Trek and more shirtless Kirk.
  • Thanks for the shout Peter!

I'm very excited for this. As a lifelong Trek fan, who knows "the holy canon" front and back yet still aches with anticipation over this new film, the fact that Star Trek has this massive push and potential behind it is damn-near heartwarming. I can honestly say I never would have expected the "sequel-before-first-movie-release" kind of deal to happen.

    Star Trek is back, yay!

I'm confused. Did these guys write the movie coming out soon? Why would they bring in new writers if they expect this one to do well?
  • No, two of the writers (Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci) are the same. Damon Lindelof is just a producer on this first upcoming film, however he's going to get in on the writing of this sequel.
  • already?
  • we live in the age of the pre-planned sequels and trilogies...
  • etc
The truth is that ,now, movies like this are treated more like TV shows; make a pilot episode, if the studio likes it order more.
  • I guess this is good news. I think I'll like the new Star Trek movie, it looks alot better than the others in the past, and it should generate good business with other people not familiar with the franchise. I'm pretty sure it will do well enough to guarantee a sequel.
  • guess Paramount doesn't mess around.
  • tpm
the first piece of crap isn't even out yet and they're already taking sequel? haven't they pissed on star trek enough?
  • Rick Berman
    Just who is this THEY?
  • Pistol Pete
Everyone involved in this "thing" called a Star Trek movie that's who.
  • TrekkieSteve
Watch the movie and shut up. After you've seen it, then say something. Remember the saying don't judge a nook by it's cover.
  • TrekkieSteve
Book, not nook. I need to proof read
  • I am not a Trek fan at all but I am so excited for this new one it looks awesome. I really like J.J Abrams and I believe he directed the best Mission Impossible movie. I am sure he will be back for the sequel.
  • In my opinion this will be Trek's Casino Royale/Batman Begins.
  • Jamie
    bang on the money.
  • clkxx
Double bang. In hindsight, how much more correct could this particular post have been?

I blame all this sequel stuff on Lucas. In fact I blame him for a lot of things, including the way my life turned out.
  • There's a whole new generation of youngens out there ready to be converted into Trekkies.
  • Tom Spanks
There's a whole new gerneration of youngens out there ready to by Trekkie toys.
  • josh
    buy
  • Tom Spanks
buy, buy miss american pie. and bye bye american economy!
  • Well this first film in the possible franchise seems like it'll be a blast. If this film does in fact do well I hope it spawns even better sequels.
  • Star Trek does look good, and the way Orci and Kurtzman are talking the sequel could be even better. As far as Trek doing good or not? It obviously will, not only will kids want to go see it due to it looking cool, but the generation that grew up with and watched the original Star Trek (movies or series). As well as that generations kids and so on and so forth until you get to those kids that can ruin a movie for you.

If they can keep all the casting from the first one for the main characters to the sequel and considering that this should and is expected to be a Summer blockbuster then yeah I see a great sequel in the future.
  • I'm not a Trek fan, but I think the trailer looks REALLY good. and I also think there will be a trilogy as well.
  • Doc Sampson
3 years of TOS, 7 years of TNG, 7 years of DS9, 7 years of Voyager, 4 years of Enterprise, plus a dozen movies. I think they're trying their best to drag this thing out forever.
  • None of which ever happened now (except for Enterprise, which I'll happily ignore).

    Drag on!
  • 790
Persoanally these guys are overated. Let's not forget they wrote Transformers.
  • TrekkieSteve
Which was a huge hit. It did $750,000,000+ worldwide. FYI, that's a lot of money.

While I'm not a supporter of sequels before the first film has even debuted, I'm excited that the Star Trek series has been resurrected. Despite a few stinkers, I really enjoyed the films and always looked forward to new installments.
  • Agreed. Hard to get excited about a sequel to a film I haven't seen yet. This news means nothing much really. Tho they filmed the second and third POTC films without finished scripts so some preparation is to be appreciated.
  • Rick Berman
what makes it a thing and not a movie? i mean, what exactally is your beef? i'm just curious to know. i'm a fan of star trek and have watched everything they've put out, both good and bad, and i'm just not getting a bad vibe from this movie.
  • to boldly make money where every production company has made money before, sequels!
  • Sbuffalo
Just let me know when tickets are available and I will buy them.
    How's that Paramount?
  • BO93
The new movie was amazing. No doubt about that. I'm excited for the next one!
  • If they're going to plan 2 more movies... I'm all for telling years 4 & 5 of the 5 year mission.
  • Jaja
The new movie is great, can't wait for the sequel! Like the way the production team wrote the story; they've re-invented Star Trek. It's a must watch and I hope the sequel will come out soon and that I live to see it :)
  • lizardking1969
obviously they have to 'tie in" with the Christopher Pike story and show how he gets mutilated... then the adventure to take him into the Forbidden Zone to the planet where he can live out his days happily... "how" this is accomplished is the adventure... I believe just about anything is available to accomplish this...
  • nad.nad
well, I guess paramount have to make the sequel of star trek. because when I saw the movie, it was really interesting. that's all.

but I do hope they'll make the sequel *smiles*
  • Star Trek is oldest and first soap opera ever.... (It would be nice it was the LAST, but... sigh).
I think sequels are natural to it. They should do it.
I would like they do it. They MUST do it!
  • Just let them do it. Let us be surprised....
  • buttercup76
