Karate Kid Remake Retitled The Kung Fu Kid

Remember when we warned you that Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith was gearing up to ruin The Karate Kid in a remake featuring Jackie Chan as Mr. Miyagi? We even pleaded with Columbia Pictures to drop the project entirely, or else they will riskangering an entire generation of moviewatchers. Well it seems like the studio is aware of the potential backlash, and according to a comment made by Jackie Chan, discovered by FirstShowing, have decided to change the title of the film.

“They don’t want to call it Karate Kid any more,” Chan said. “They want to call it The Kung Fu Kid.”

The title change appeases my anger over the idea of a remake or reimagining, possibly because it might not be seen as such with a title like “The Kung Fu Kid”. I was only concerned that the new film would ruin the legacy of the original, which many people forget, earned Pat Morita an Academy Award nomination. And yes, people forget this because the film’s legacy has already suffered from the sequels and remake The Next Karate Kid.

The film will be set in an exotic locale, with a shoot planned in Beijing. Chris Murphy’s screenplay is said to “borrow elements” from the original film, and is not a strict remake. Last we heard, Pink Panther 2 helmer Harold Zwart was in line to direct the film. Jaden, an avid practitioner of karate, made his big screen debut as Will Smith’s son (big stretch) in Pursuit of Happyness. His performance in The Day the Earth Stood Still was highly criticized.

Oh what the hell. I may not like the fact that they are remaking/re-imagining the Karate Kid. But to rename it the Kung Fu Kid...makes it sounds like one of those movies made by The Asylum.
  • freemachine
LMAO @ The Asylum comment....so true, so true... However, I'm still looking forward to "Day the Earth Stopped" and "Alien vs. Hunter". Those knockbusters can't be any worse than the originals. I'll keep my eyes peeled for them on the SyFy (lol) channel.
  • joshi38
I bet the Asylum are pissed right now. Once the trailers hit, you can bet the Asylum are going to make a similar movie and they would have loved to have called it "The Kung Fu kid".
  • Unkown
    f**** u b****
  • Movie Fan
You sons of bitches. You complain at the name Karate Kid and now at the sound of the renaming you all talk trash. Will I think the kid is a great up and coming actor and just maybe the film will be a hit with martial art fans and the new generation of kids.

And some of you sound like kkk bitches.
  • gonecritical
that kid annoys the hell out of me. maybe it was just his character in The Day the Earth Stood Still.
  • I agree. Never realised that it's that kid people are talking about.
That was one of those times, when I wanted a character to just be left by the wayside or be killed.
  • starscream9289
This is an April Fool's joke, I just know it!
  • Wow, Well the news will come when they want to remake Back to the Future and just call it Black to the Future.
  • And in twenty years we can get Bad Boys or Independence Day remade with Keenan Thompsan starring and then see how Mr. Fresh Prince likes it when one of his movies is remade and ruined. WTF?
  • D.I
    Oh thank you Jeebus.

If it's not called Karate Kid it's not a remake. Frankly they can do want they want with the movie and I won't give a damn.
  • gah
does it really matter? I know it's mostly nostalgia for people but Karate Kid is not a good film. In fact, you could easily argue it's a pretty bad film. And no one here is going to see this movie anyway, and that's the best protest you could possibly take part in. Just not giving them your money.
  • D.I
What? Karate Kid 1 is a pretty decent sports film.

    And Pat Morita is awesome.
  • Karate Kid is still a good damn movie.
  • jank
i hope they aren't just changing the title from karate to kung fu without changing the martial arts being performed. because believe it or not hollywood, some people actually know the difference between the two. i mean, one would think, with jackie involved, such a mishap shall not happen... right?
  • Actually, I think the producers of the movie actually said something like (paraphrasing) "Karate originated from China". SOmething absurd like that. Thank GOD they actually changed it to the Kung Fu Kid because if they went ahead and ignorantly mixing fact with fiction (as in Chinese and Japanese culture), then I would revolt. REVOLT!
  • mark
Well that's what really freaked me out! the remake of a move that you addapt to sth else is fine to me... especially with Karate Kid where the new generation of kids around deserve their own cool kid flicks.

now it's kungfu he's doing not karate, and i think that if i were 10 i would find kungfu cooler then karate which when i was actually 10 theree was only 2 martial art worth mentioning....

Karate and well being a NINJA!

    JUDO was for the sissies
SUMO was.. and still is just a joke
TAEKWONDO was for the good boy... and the aggressive Korean
YOGA was for the old bag from the convenient store
TAICHI was for the old bag from the convenient store that clames it's actually martial art.
KUNGFU was for the short chinese guy that would bluff you in making you think he can kick your ass.

I don't know but i think our kids now days would relate with kubgfu more then karate and if it's the case hurry up and make the movie(it's cool for kids)

For god sake don't call it "karate kid" just because American don't know the difference and you can make more money that way !@#!*(&$@#

For what is of Jacky Chan. let me tell you the guy don't give a fuck anymore... is playing the chinese marketing card from now on and you wont see him in hollywood much anymore. Just showing is face is bringing him more money nowdays in China. if you like him and miss him, he's got a bundle of funny( cheezy chinese ) commercials you can enjoy his acting talents from.
  • tnt
You're mixing up karate (most popular branches) and ninjitsu. Stabbing people from behind isn't particulary the karate way, however that is the ninja way.

Regarding J.Chan - well, you don't have any basis to say he doesn't give a f**, since you don't know. But you can think whatever you want.
  • Morita was nominated for an academy award for his performance, but apparently its not a good film?
  • gah
I forgot. The Academy is always right about everything.
  • I heard an interview with Will Smith a while back in which he said the controversy of calling it 'The Karate Kid' was because Karate is Japanese and they were planning to set the film in China, hence it makes sense to call it the Kung Fu Kid rather than Karate Kid.
  • Yeah, if they kept it Karate but have it take place in China and having Mr. Miyagi be a Chinese character (though both 'karate' and Miyagi' are Japanese names/words), it would be the most ignorant thing ever.

I don't care if a Korean dude plays a Japanese dude, that's fine as long as the actor does his/her job well. But to just mix things up and present it as 'authentic' is so lame.

Imagine if they had a samarai movie and having take place in...like Thailand. That's pretty dangerous because there's a lot of stupid people out there who think take that as fact.
  • See, I don't mind it starring Jaden. In fact, I like the kid. He reminds me of Huey from The Boondocks with that hair. Or Carlito Colon from WWE. I just think that calling it "The Karate Kid" starring Jackie Chan would be wrong. All wrong. For one, Jackie Chan does not seem like the kind of person who would want to take anything away from people. Add to that fact, The Karate Kid in of itself reminded me of Chico and the Man with the guy he even first ran into named Freddy Fernandez *like* Freddy Prinze's Chico Rodriguez. It's the same Fish-Out-Of-Water buddy film format that gave Pat Morita his shot at solo success. He had originally starred in a short-lived Jakes Komack series entitled "Mr. T and Tina" as... you guessed it, a maintenance guy. I do not think the people producing movies today take any care of the project other than what sales figures their demographic projects. If that is the case, why not like in the 1980's take the same loving chances on something *new?* Risks are what led to the kids sports comedy boom, He-Man cartoons, Hip-Hop, Alternative music and shows like Cosby or Fresh Prince. If Jackie Chan is raising Jaden like Bruce Lee taught Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar then whose gonna be Jackie's Krishnamurti? Could you perhaps throw in Sir Ben Kingsley and maybe have them do an older drug-free send-up of Harold and Kumar? Haha!
  • I guess I'm happy it's not directly linked to the original films. I still don't plan on watching whatever comes of this new stuff because it already sounds like it's going to be crap.
  • mark
I don't know how old are ppl on this blog but, dude "karate kid" was a "kid flick" not a good movie!!!

If you really love a flick, it doesn't make it very good.

Like music where they stop having good bands in 80

the movie industry build up a set of template to choose from and a computer could write the hole movie for you. just change the names, the subject, and there you go!

hollywood cannot create a good movie because it always follow that template, that has been studied and decided on when to do what.

they have it all mapped out [3rd min] (second actor entrance) [9th min](event)...etc

so how to decide on a good film... well first start watching movies that have been made by ppl not hollywood.

Notice: i love hollywood movies, i love pretty much all styles but when i went and watch GI-joe i knew i wanst watching Gi-joe but a bunch of FX and no story. and to be frank i think if it's a film and not a movie... the dumb general public would just not enjoy it as much.... it would be a like a life without terrorist(why do you think the governement is blowing up their own building?)
  • john
Yep that's So very true. I happen to have one of these computer at home.

    it's call A.W.E.S.O.M.-O

and it's from Japan, that's actually the one they use to write "karate kid"
  • Here's the next speech bubble in that sequence:

"No, no you aren't. You are simply going to remake it, and that can't ruin it in anyway. I don't know why people get any more upset about a bad remake than they do about a bad original film - they're both just bad films after all."
  • Karate Kid is a Classic, good to hear they are not keeping the name..
    [youtube 4W_QFCQYac8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W_QFCQYac8 youtube]
  • joshi38
This is actually kind of better. By changing the name, it's now easier to imagine that this film isn't a remake, but simply a movie attempting to cash in on a long dead franchise by having the premise be similar and a name that alludes to it.

Thus, I can go into this movie with an open mind... who knows, it may be good (it probably won't, but if I go in thinking that without having even seen a trailer, then I'm bound to hate it no matter what).
  • Peter! You just made my monday! I love that hilsrious line - we are gong to ruin... LOL

So True - what a mess things are turning out to be. Can only get better! LOL

Boo on kung fu... they should abandon this project completely - and burn all eveidence of its existence.
  • Perhaps it hasn't aged well, but the film is preciously important to many of us. It has wonderful characters, an engaging story and a theatrical ending that was just absolutely amazing when I was a boy. And, unlike this upcoming Kung Fu Kid, Karate Kid was/is generally regarded as a family film. People of all ages went to see it in cinemas and got it on video - it was absolutely huge because it was grounded and compelling in its storytelling. Parents chose to come watch The Karate Kid, while parents will likely be reluctantly dragged to see Kung Fu Kid.
  • RPK
I bloody hate remakes. Come up with an original concept! It shouldn't be that hard to make an original concept from the starting point of a young karate student.
  • sadly, it's not.
  • lol @ Keenan Thompson.
  • can't wait for the back to the future remake...:@
  • it's a good movie, yes.
  • Although I am still annoyed, I am glad they decided to change the title for sake of authencity. Much better.
  • jamie
they never should have called it a remake, just made it another sequel like the hillary swank movie that no one cares about
  • Kraaken
No one even mentons the fact that Jaden Smith is a spoiled little shit who unlikable and that Will has definitely lost the humbleness that made him appealing in his earlier days. His kids obviously have never been said "no" to.
  • B33
In an ideal world, it would be...
  • Wax on Wax Off....
  • Clever_Nickname
I just can't stand to watch this kid.

The reason being that if he wasn't Will Smith's son, we wouldn't be watching him.
  • Branden
I hate you Columbia Pictures, almost more than Fox.
  • And finally, with this news, we no longer need to give a shit about this movie.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I don't get it. It seems that for some of you, changing a title absolves this film from being a hack, rip-off of an original film. huh?

Oh, and Will Smith's kid should not be in movies. He made Keanu look like an acting Jedi.
  • Joe
Would someone please tell why this movie would ruin the original? Its not like they are going to the original movie and re-editing it or something. If you loved the first one then watch that when this new one comes out and I bet you, you will have a better appreciation for it, so if anything this new version should help you like the original even more. not ruin it.
  • Renaissance_Man
A remake tarnishes the original because, as it was previously, it would have usurped its name and created a new generation of people who believe that the rest of the series is as full of shit as the new film is likely to be.

Imagine somebody having your same exact name: this person is a complete idiot; a criminal; a no-good miscreant. If people only knew this person instead of you, you would be judged because they carried your name. (Not the best analogy, I know, but I'm tired and it's Monday).
  • Wasabi Steak
Man let it go lol Karate Kid is so well known I doubt people are gonna have a new percpetion of the franchise from a new movie.

The truth is its just sad 30 year olds who romanticized the original film and cant let go of there childhood from 20 years ago for a flick that wasnt very good to begin with.
Why does it matter what a new generation think of a movie about a kid doing Karate? Its doesnt.

    Move on people lol.
  • THOMPSON_FAN
Kenan Thompson is funny. I don't know how well he'd fare in an ID remake, but he sure is a funny guy.
  • Getoverit
    The Karate Kid 2...sucked.
    The Karate Kid 3...sucked.
    The Next Karate Kid...sucked.

The legacy of The Karate Kid was tarnished more than a decade ago.
