Today, The Hollywood Reporter tell us that The Weinstein Co. are behind David O. Russell’s adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Linings Playbook. This news popped up a few times recently in interviews with Quick and a YouTube video of the author reading from the novel, but nobody much noticed it; and the story of Russell’s involvement originally broke over a year ago, even before Nailed began shooting. If only there were more hours in the day for me to trawl the web and bring links to you. I would do it, you know? Because I love you.

Taking the Hollywood Report at face value, the screenplay hasn’t been written yet. In fact, it has, and in the video - which you can see below the break - Quick describes it as “phenomenal” and says he’s “really excited about” it. Every screenplay of Russell’s that I know, so far filmed or not, is pretty darn good so I’m inclined to believe him. And it’s good to know the creator is on side, at the very least to quell worries of bad PR and creative battles. We all know, I think that Russell loves a good creative battle (or do I just mean ‘I know we all think’?).

Originally, Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella were attached to produce this adaptation, but sadly, neither are with us any longer. Michelle Raimo will be producing in their stead.

Here’s an edited bit of the novel’s official blurb taken from Quick’s website:

During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife Nikki.

When Pat meets the tragically widowed, physically fit, and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year’s Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their ‘contract.’ All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.

I’m picking up mild vibes of The Fisher King and, in a roundabout way, Groundhog Day there.

The casting process is currently underway, and your Fantasy Studio actor suggestions are welcome in the comments if you have any. Here’s that video.

They never even finished filming Nailed. Still missing the scene where the Jessica Biel character gets the nail stuck in her head. Which is only the driving plot of the whole film.

I just went to Quick's website and saw from his bio that he's from Philly. I figured he had to be given the character of the city in the book. I hope the movie maintains that character. I guess it's not critical-- it could be any sport's team in any city-- but somehow if it was the Huskers instead of the Eagles, it wouldn't have the same gritty feel.

I thnk the actor who plays Tiffany will make or break this movie, so I'm casting Nicole Kidman. She plays as good a freak as anyone. Or she could play Tiffany's sister. Either would do for me. Ally McBeal could pull off Tiffany as well.

I absolutely LOVED this book and am very excited to hear that it will be a movie!! Matthew Quick is an amazing author and I hope the movie does the book justice!!
  • Well I feel bad for any of the actors who will have to endure him for some work
  • Sure, I love Huckabees and yes, I'm excited for this and Nailed, but all I really want to see from David O. Russell is his take on the new Iraq war--a veritable Three Kings II. I'm hoping that Soldiers Pay was his way of doing research for a new script.
  • I guess I could have said "I Heart Huckabees."
  • Wonder if he's going to go off on any of his actors this time...

There'll be a story about David O. Russell losing his temper before filming finishes. I'm calling it.
  • That, or some Christopher Nolan style revenge. Nolan and Bale storm the set in the Batmobile. (Please God, let this happen.)

Can we assume Lilly Tomlin will not be starring?
  • or George Clooney?
  • the plot sounds so strange, but interesting, i suppose. Why does it remind me of the Fight Club so much, though?

I know he's a pretentious douche, but I love his films. I can't wait for Nails. Anyone know the status of Nails? did it ever get enough funding or did it just fall apart?
  • Post production. Supposed to be out within this or the next year. I like his films too.

P.S. I hate myself a lot for being "that guy" but I think it's actually Nailed. (Off to bite my tongue and curse my compulsive need to correct.)
