Casting is finally being announced for the Farrelly BrothersThe Three Stooges, and the only real surprise is that Jim Carrey is in talks to play Curly. Carrey is planning to gain 40 pounds for the role so that he can more closely match the physical look of Jerome “Curly” Howard. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, and Benicio Del Toro is currently in talks to play Moe, but both of those names have been reported on the site previously. Even Jim Carrey had been rumored to be involved at some previous point of time. The movie is not a biopic, but a comedy that follows the antics of the trio. I’ve heard the script is split into four chapters and is kinda episodic, with the trio breaking up and going their own separate ways.

I use to be such a huge fan of the Farrelly Brothers. I mean, these are the same guys who directed Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary and Kingpin. But they haven’t helmed a really good film in at least 8 years (Osmosis Jones, Shallow Hal, Stuck on You, Fever Pitch, The Heartbreak Kid). The fact that the film didn’t get off the ground at Warner Bros doesn’t exactly instill faith in the project. And honestly, a Three Stooges movie just sounds like a horrible idea, even with the level of talent attached.

Discuss: What do you think of the casting choices for The Three Stooges?

  • Carrey as Curley and Penn as Larry work, but since when was Moe spanish? Del Toro is an amazing actor though this should be interesting.

I have 3 better suggestions that should play the role of the 3 stooges...

    adam sandler as moe

    rob schneider or as larry

jim carrey or jack black or will farrell as curly
  • Wow, Sean Penn is the name that surprises me the most, still. Jim Carrey is the most normal choice of the three! I'm interested in this a lot, and i don't like the three stooges...
  • Hell NO. the Farrelly Brothers suck. and a COMEDY??? not a biopic? are you freakin joking me? This movie is going to be a huge disastrous flop!
  • A flop? Sean Penn never does flops, or at least he hasn't yet..
  • bigxtonkaxlove
Farrely Brothers make the funniest movies, dumb and dumber, me myself and irene, shallow hal, and there's something about mary. need i say more
  • ....... I can't really see it.. =/
  • Brad
It's not a biopic? So it's just a new 3 Stooges movie like they're trying to revive the franchise? Sounds weird and lame. And this cast? Why?
  • I was hoping the Jonas Brothers would star....drat.....you know, after they did Walter the Farting Dog, of course.

I don't really care much for the casting nor the directing decision. I don't think the movie will be a big thing. it'll come and go pretty fast.
  • Alex
I think regardless of what we all think of this idea, this has got to at least raise some interest in most of you. Those three guys as the three stooges? it boggles the mind to say the least.
  • Exactly, I can't say I'm not interested. I really want to see where this goes before I write if off...
  • Perhaps the oddest casting choices ever. Is this some kind of early April Fools Day setup? Carry is belivable but Sean Penn in a Farrelly Brothers movie the year after he wins an Oscar? Del Toro comes off of a movie like Che and now wants to play Moe? Please forgive me for not buying this right away.
  • April Fools, my first thought. WTF doesn't even cover this. I'm stupified.
  • Yeah I was thinking the same thing...still interesting tho...

  • it'll be his first.
  • you must be just a recent fan of Penn because prior to Mystic River he's made many bad films
  • Failure
FAIL - Sean Penn being in many bad films? Doubt it. Maybe one? Look at his credential on imdb and name one objectively "bad" film. You can't. Try doing some research before making an ass out of yourself.
  • I really don't see Penn or Del Toro in this project..is it just me or is almost ridiculous that these talented actors would even think of doing this? sounds like career suicide

while I did grow up watching the classic episodes of Three Stooges loving them all even the Shemp ones..making a cornball comedy with serious actors sounds like a really bad idea...
  • I truly want to believe you're kidding... I'm willing to give it a shot (assuming it's true), and as a comedy (where they'll all be doing their Stooges impressions) kinda seems more palatable than a biopic... but I have very little faith in the Farrelys, as most of us. I'll wait for the trailer, but I don't think this is their comeback.
  • Shempie
This movie was what was meant by "pestilence" in the Book of Revelation. If it gets made it will be time to sell all our possessions, don white robes and head to the mountaintop. Then again, we survived "Weekend at Bernie's 2."

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  • ShallowHalNeedsAGal
This is piquing my interest. And I, for one, enjoyed Shallow Hal.
  • Juiceless
This is the craziest casting I have ever heard of. Ever. In my life.
  • Like others have said, I'm a little skeptical about the idea of Penn and Del Torro doing a movie by such mainstream guys as the Farrelly Brothers. I think that the Farrelly Brothers would be a good choice to execute this type of comedy, but having such big wigs in it is confusing.
But hey, maybe this is exactly why the Bros. need to finally make a truly good comedy.
  • This must be a pre-April Fool's joke. I would be VERY interested in a biopic documenting the real lives of the Three Stooges (I hear Curly was quite a madman), but a reinvented comedy is about as appealing as regurgitated pizza. How about a brand new comedy with these three guys? Take the concept and run with it...just don't call it The Three Stooges.
  • have you ever watched the Three Stooges on acid? I pee'd myself.
  • Why the fuck not? Hollywood has systematically tried to ruin everything else.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there's no way this is going to work.
  • Get It?
    Ted Raimi should play Shemp.
  • Shouldn't this be filed under Worst Fucking Idea Ever.
  • Shouldn't this be filed under Worst Fucking Idea Ever?
  • As much as I adore Sean Penn, Jim Carry, Benicio Del Toro and the Three Stoogies... i just wouldn't want to watch this. nothing against remakes... its just not meant to be. come on hollywood!
  • Sounds awkward.
  • Somehow I can see Del Toro working in this - Sean Penn....Hell NO! I'm not a fan of his to begin with and to cast him in this is just boggling to me - I will be interested to see how this all plays out.
  • I really wish it was just The Farrelly Brothers and Carrey, Del Toro, and Carrey making SHORT FILMS on The Three Stooges. The characters can't support a whole 3-act film structure without having to have a cheesy conflict like them going their separate ways.
  • Ghost
That would be fun! I wouldn't mind that or something in that fashion but not exactly the Stooges we know of from the past.
  • shadow
good idea, keep this out of a movie theater,
  • John Guard
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY ???????????

would you want to make a film about the three stooges?

    let them rest in peace............
  • WOW, this is actually looking promising. I've been hearing about this movie for so long, but it's finally getting made, WITH REAL STARS too. Should be great!
  • 790
Sounds about as exciting as a Harlem Globe Trotter Movie.

The Fish that ate Pittsburgh part duex.
  • Oh, so YOU'RE the one!
  • It's too bad I never really liked 3 Stooges stuff, otherwise I might be interested in seeing this. Why do they think audiences will see this when the majority are more than 'meh' about 3 Stooges and those who are fans can pop in DVDs of the classic stuff? This project is needed at all.
  • mike
    No
  • benicio del toro as moe? very intriguing
  • very eclectic
  • Goobity
"Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro are The Three Stooges"

    No. They are not.
  • shadow
    amen.
  • I figured Carrey would be playing Moe for some reason. I don't know about any other casting but Jim just doesn't seem to fit in as Curly. I hope this turns out for the best but right now, it doesn't look like it.
  • I'm no the first to say WTF? Here's hoping.
