Nightmare on Elm Street Remake Plot Details Revealed

nightmare on elm street

LatinoReview have published a video script review for Wesley Strick’s script for Platinum Dunes remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Here are some of the core plot details that I learned from the report:

After being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, a pre-school gardener/caretaker named Freddy returns for revenge against the children, now 18 years old, that accused him of sexual abuse. But was Freddy a child molester or was he falsely accused? This is the central question and main addition to the film’s plot. Freddy doesn’t have many lines, but that isn’t all that surprising considering that the film’s producers have said the character doesn’t joke around.

  • Jackie Earle Haley for Freddy!
  • wow! did you think of that all on your own?
  • dagreenman18
i liked the dark humour of the orignal. why do they have to take it out?

I'll wait for the trailer before i form an opinion.
  • Brad
The original didn't really have any humor either. The jokey-ness of the character didn't really emerge until part 3 and - in my opinion - it was all down hill from there.
  • I just hope it's NOT another stupid, glossy Michael Bay remake with dolled up female characters who looked like they stepped out of a porno. Let's have some real folks here, please.
  • Personally, I'm not too impressed with this script. I'd recommend Haley keep his distance.
  • That's exactly how it's going to be.

    I mean... it's MICHAEL BAY.
  • Now now Broomstick... Friday the 13th wasnt a remake is was a Reimagining that means they didnt do anything new or creative to the franchise... This here is a full blown Remake! i'm curious but if freddy doesnt joke around an might not be a child molester then they are really taking out the core idea of freddy
  • Just want to say that Wes Craven's New NIghtmare was a great film. LIke the original it returned Freddy to his very serious and very scary persona. There was no humor. That film is very underrated. There will be interest in this remake because the concept is so good. One month before filming and no one cast as Freddy yet? Interesting.

  • Haley Joel Osment for Freddy...
  • If this turns out anything like the F13 remake, I'm going to slit my wrists. The fact that they wouldn't cast Robert England is one thing, but to make him devoid of his trademark, snarky personality? That just ruins what the villian has always stood for. Platinum Dunes is to remakes as Fox is to a film company.
  • No jokes, so I will only see Freddy say "It's better to burn out than fade away," on reruns of the series? Fark
Although the twist on did he or didn't he might work... But he prolly did.

  • Sounds boring...
  • marz
a child molesting freddy??...ok.aside from that...he gota be even more disturbed..if your gona cast vengence on someone who at the time was only like 4,u got SERIOUS issues. i think they coulda came up with a better plot then that...like maybe a few kids turned up missing or dead and they blamed him for that..but molesting?? yikes.
  • Brad
You do know that Freddy was a child molester in the original film right? That's not the change. The change is that he MIGHT NOT be a child molester.
  • dxr
Screw the remake. Bring back Freddy's Nightmares!
  • Goro
Good call! I loved that show for all 5 eps it lasted (or whatever)!
  • Daniel
    I agree
  • Um, hi, marz? Freddy was always a child molestor. That's not new. He's supposed to be a villain. The wrinkle is that he might not be a child molestor. See how that got switched around? Yeah. So, anyway, I'm not feeling the new concept too much. Is anyone else imagining Groundskeeper Willie reprising his role as Freddy?
  • notjon
The first scene has the kids playing Guitar Hero and Johnny Depp's character is a "podcaster"? Pass.

ps. the idea of Nancy being "goth" is too painful for me to even make fun of.
  • You know, I kinda like the idea of him being wrongly accused makes what happened to him tragic in a way and the revenge story line deeper.

Although saying that it might take way from him simply being pure evil, both in life and death.

and to the people saying its bad for the character to take away the humour (dark or otherwise) I'd say that without the delivery of Englund it would be lost anyway. Better to play it straight than risk making it cheesy.

Boooooooo i want Freddy vs. Jason 2 or Chucky vs. Leprechaun BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to remakes, except Friday the 13th
  • Brandon
Um, I don't understand this new 'twist'.
The fact that Freddy was or was not a child molester is not supposed to be the issue in the film. The fact that the parents took vengeance and killed him is. THEY started the killings. You know, sins of the father visited upon the children and all that.
Unlike Jason, who would kill just about any teenager, Freddy had rules (a code, if you will). If he wasn't really a child molester, then there's really no terror involved. He's in the right (supernaturally at least).
    Jeez.
  • Daniel
True but like Freddy he did have a reason. But why change what already worked. Fredy was a child killer. Not a molester come on. Personaly just like Kane made the best Jason there is and can never be a replacement for Robert Englund.
  • sounds good
but then again so did the friday the 13th remake.
  • joe
    :/

i guess that is a little better than EXACTLY following the original's story. i agree for the jackie earle haley to be freddy, except he'd need lines to make it really shine.
  • Sean Bean
Well, first of all he wasn't a child molester, he was a child killer. So... that's dumb. And secondly, yes, he was a child killer, he's not falsely accused... that's the whole basis of the character. What the fuck is with the changes? What's wrong with just telling the same fucking story again, it's the story everyone likes, it's the story that made the franchise famous. Every time someone stages a new production of Hamlet does anyone feel the fucking need to say "Wait, did his uncle really kill his father or was he falsely accused?" Fucking no, that's the point... fuck.
  • Goro
Well, that's not quite right either. HAMLET staged as the pure shakespearean play is (natch) very similar, though at times it is edited down and depending on the scenes left out, the mood/themes are different. Eg., is there an Oedipal Complex at work with Hamlet and Gertrude.

But almost always when the play is re-made, it is re-interpreted and scenes are inserted to expose a new theme or to enhance an idea that may or may not actually be evidenced in the original.

Most people that stage these are creative people and are often interested in putting their stamp (ie., their interpretation) into the play/movie/etc.
  • thefan
I also advocate for Jackie Earle Haley to be given the role of Freddy Krueger. If Robert Englund is truly not reprising his role, I couldn't think of a better replacement. The casting of Freddy will make or BREAK this film.
  • I liked the way the old movies portrayed Freddy but if they are going to go a different route and have him all serious with fewer lines, that's fine by me. All the sequels to this really ruined how scary Freddy could be and with this reboot, I hope they can bring back the terror.
  • dxr
Yeah, I agree with this. While I don't dislike the later more comedic Nightmares, there was nothing more scary to me as a kid than the first movie.
  • RandomThoughts
So let me get this straight...Freddy Got Fingered? (of being a child molester)

*rimshot* - seamless Tom Green transition!
  • akucola
Michel Gondry should write and direct the remake.

    MIND BLOWN
  • Im cool with dolled up females that look like they stepped out of a porno. after all they're only there to get killed
  • wait? he was molesting people when hewas 4? this plot doesn't make sense
  • freemachine
As far as remakes go, and I hate them, I don't find these changes objectionable. I'm more interested in seeing some concept art of what Freddy will look like. I'm sure they will be changing his appearance to some extent.
  • zigy
    Bill mosely for freddy
  • screamboy
who cares about freddy, i wanna know whos tina and nancy and etc. are they still gonna do the whole tina getting butchered up the wall scene? cuz if they do then they would kind of look like copycatting assholes,(not like they dont already) but if they dont i would kind of be depressed. that was like the coolest scene you know? if nancy is a goth i am not going to be a happy camper. thats bullshit yo
  • Katrina
How can Freddy be framed or falsly acused? he was demented from birth. Bastard son of a hundred maniacs. I would not put mollesting past him but being a child killer is his central issue not the molestation. The dream demons gave him the job of crossing the line becouse he was already evil not falsly acused.
  • Nathan
I am the biggest Nightmare on Elm Street fan there is. Freddy did not molest kids he was a child murderer. If they are going to make a remake at least have the respect for who Freddy is. Freddy was Freddy that is what made him scary.
  • kj87
Err unfortunatley freddy in the original was a molester and killer hence why alot of pissed of parents kill him that was main story how he got burnt.
If u make a remake y change the story line. Never know though new story line could be better but would take the evil setting out of him
  • kj87
Soz read that wrong he wasNT a molester unfournatley a child murder (English is terrible)
  • Elmstreet
boo new actor for freddy wat a rip off
  • Elmstreet
No no no no no the movie isnt going to be as good as the originals without the real actor as freddy Kruger
  • Elmstreet
I agree with wat sean bean said every one likes the original story he WAS a child killer and he wasnt Falsely Accused man if the people who is directing this movie sees nightmare on elm street 1 they will see that their screwing the whole movie up they show a video of what happend a little girl walks in the boiler room and freddy sees her and kills her then the parents got mad and burned him alive. Also in nightmare on elm street dream warriors it shows freddys life and how he turned out the way he is so its pointless to make a movie telling about freddys life the original series already did that for them
  • boogedyboo
Falsely accused? Freddy is supposed to be an evil scummy boogey man, not a ghost who wants revenge because he is actually a good person. That is so lame, do they expect us to go "Wow, I can't believe Freddy is a nice guy after all I sure feel sorry for the boogey man." A ghost getting revenge was good in the Crow, but to use that style of story for Freddy is weak. Ugggggghhhh remakes make me crazy mad!!!!!
  • Just Me
They took the dark humor out because the trend these days is for you might call "naturalism", or making things "darker" in tone. Its a lame, lazy, and cynical post-90's way to sell the movie (and justify a remake) by saying "that old stuff was fake- were gonna do it for REAL now- its gonna be intense, man".

Playful artifice is not in- its considered corny. Kids these dayswant their movies "realistic"- as in a serial killer building elaborately constructed deathtraps designed to teach strangers to appreciate life.

    Ya know, realistic.
