american jesus
Earlier today, Mark Millar admitted that he would be moving on from trying to get his Superman pitch off the ground, and now we have some idea why. THR reports that Millar will reteam with his Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn on a live-action big screen adaptation of Millar’s American Jesus comic book. Vaughn is looking to produce the film independently, and they are eyeing a Summer 2009 start.

The comic started as a miniseries titled “Chosen”, and eventually evolved into a trilogy of miniseries retitled “American Jesus”. The second volume, subtitled “The Resurrection”, is due out this Fall. The story follows a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making? Basically, American Jesus is Millar’s re-telling of The Book of Revelation from the Bible, set in contemporary times.

You can read the first full issue for free on Newsarama. The first volume gets released in a 72-page tradepaperback on April 8th, and is available for preorder on Amazon for $9.99.

"who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ"
You really mean to say "who discovers that he is Jesus Christ, returned", or "who suddenly discovers he’s the returned Jesus Christ".

    Small edits, but enormous difference.

    And it's a great comic.
  • Well I liked the song American Jesus...maybe I'll like thsi too.
  • Brad
Great song. I've been a huge Bad Religion fan since I first heard it 16 years ago. I don't know why you're being voted down.

I'll have to read it first before I judge. Like I said in the Superman post, Millar is hit and miss. Kick Ass had so much potential (brilliant concept) but it just fails in so many ways.
  • How does Kick Ass fail? I'm not familiar with the original property.
  • -----Spoliers------

Though the kid does think that he is Jesus Christ at the beginning, he finds out that he is actually the son of the devil at the end.
    -----End Spoliers------

So the summary is actually incorrect.

just read the first issue. weak. millar needs to seriously do some research. his twelve-year-old dialogue is ridiculous, no kids talk like that at that young an age.
  • Well, I do.
  • Ew, is this a Christian comic book? *barfs*
  • Would it be better if the kid realized he was the returned Muhammed?

(Answer: No, because then the film makers would be murdered for depicting the fictional character on screen.)
  • Never heard of this comic - I'll have to check it out.
  • Allen
come on! another white jesus?! will no one admit that he was middle eastern?

I hI hope he gets it made so then all the church groups come after him. This guy is the shittest writer of comics period. Wanted was a load of crap. And now he's trying to make another piece of crap-studios will not touch this. Somone needs to kick this guys head in. Period.
  • greggorybasore
First off I don't see any any reason to assume that studios won't touch this property. Secondly I like his comics and I think a lot of of readers do as well. Even if he's not your cup of tea to say he's "the shittiest writer of comics period" is an absurd exaggeration.

I'd love to see this get made into a movie just to see audiences reaction to the twist ending.

I really like this guy's concepts, but it seems he fails in the execution..
  • I've never heard of this before and it sounds great. I just might have to pick this up. It should definitely make a good movie I would think.
  • Maybe it's different for everyone around the world., you know, like Black Santa Claus.

If Jesus is coming back. He ain't going to be American. Bottom Line.
