x-men origins: wolverine

Update: Alex from FirstShowing contacted Fox, and the studio claims the story isn’t true.

I received an interesting e-mail yesterday from a /Film reader named Adam B claiming that Wolverine 2 was in development, and Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy was penning the script.

alright guys, im currently working at the bradford international film festival in the UK, and tonight we had simon beaufoy, screenwriter of slumdog millionaire doing a screentalk. anyway he dropped a bit of a scoop, hes been employed to write the script for “wolverine 2″ a film i didnt actually realise was even in the pipeline. he commented that while he was apprehensive about the project (claiming to not even know what a wolverine was!) his agent pursuaded him to take it on. he clarified that working on a film thats successor has yet to be finished was a strange experience, and one that he wasnt sure he was comfortable with. anyway, i read your site everyday and figured id send this interesting little tidbit over, seeing as you guys are such big fans of slumdog.

I did some research and found that Beaufoy was in fact at the Bradford International Film Festival, which makes this all the more possible. But no mention of Simon’s Wolverine mention was made in any of the newspaper stories. I put a call for help out on twitter, but no one I know was in attendance. I didn’t plan on posting this report unless I could double source it, but apparently Adam emailed the same report to AICN and theey posted the e-mail this morning. I’m not sure if Merrick was able to confirm the report with another source, but I thought that now that the rumor was out of the bag, it may be worth posting on /Film.

I’m suspicious because I heard that X-Men Origins: Wolverine covers most of the Wolverine mythology, and doesn’t leave much room for more stories to take place before X-Men. I’ve also heard that Hugh Jackman is not interested in doing another film. So, we’ll see…

  • Wolverine is going to be a poor kid in the slums of Mumbai who had to fight his way out and had to develop a hard exterior shell in order to survive a cruel and tough world.
  • jackman isn't interested and the guy doesn't even know what a wolverine is? this is shaping up to be something that should just do down as a rumor - hopefully.
  • Jackman is very interested he already talked about the sequel during press for Australia..it's more than likely set in Japan and Lady Deathstrike might be invovled in the story
  • Wolerine has had a lot of misadventures... to cover them all in one movie would be ballsy. They could do several things pre-x-men or post x-men 3 with Logan. there is so much they could do with that character

as for a new Wolerine, I think it might be nice especially if they take him in a new direction. Jackman has always been this cartoony leadery type wolverine to me if they were to change his persona to the more of a lone wolf character it would be harder to see Jackman fitting in. He has 4 films as this established style and it would be tough to change that
  • I don't think this is true, but while we're on the subject I really hope Marvel will do a female superhero movie... come on, I want Storm to have her own movie!
  • Lencho
I would've said, "Claw his way out..."
  • Why? The first one looks like it's not going to be that great to start with. what would be the point of making another one and then having someone who doesn't know about wolverine to write it? how about we just get a dead pool movie? or even the magneto movie would be more interesting than another wolverine origins movie.
  • "(claiming to not even know what a wolverine was!)" Thats all i needed to hear. As for the wolverine movie...fail boat is in the harbor ready to go. I tell you what would be real crazy if they could get someone who actually knows about the storys and the characters and there damn history and let them make a movie. I know it's hard to squeeze every detail in but seriously stop just looking at the cover and and guessing what it's about. BTW check out the deadpool toy for the new movie..enjoy
  • yeah because every female superhero movie has done soooo well
  • ajt
Even though from what I've seen of Deadpool in the trailers and TV spots (with the fused together mouth, blades coming out of the wrists, eye beams) which looks stupid, I do hope that Ryan Reynolds gets his spin-off movie where we get to see the "classic" Deadpool. I think the Jackman Wolverine will be done after this movie.
  • hey guys, im the adam that sent this in, and would just like to reassure everyon that he genuinly did reveal this at the screentalk last night. i have no reason to make such a story up. he did go into detail about how in the past he hasnt ventured into such territory, and that hes apprehensive about doing so, but went onto claim that it was primarily his agent/manager persons idea that he should give it a shot. so yeah, i guarantee you guys that he did say this last night.
  • if they could make them as good as Kill Bill minus the gore..why not have a female superhero movie? the problems in the past were that they were rushed spin-offs
  • yeah, pretty much. Elektra and Catwoman were two god=awful movies, but somehow, female-led action films (Kill Bill, Resident Evil, Wanted) are excellent.
  • exactly...I would have used examples of the Alien series with Ripley and Terminator with Sarah Connor...because they can be done successfully I just don't think studios and writers put that effort anymore...originally Ripley's character wasn't written a woman Ridley Scott just cast it that way...it's going to take a strong minded director and studio to make a great female superhero movie...I think WB is the one to do it with Wonder Woman...
  • ba dum chink!
  • Can we PLEASE get some more origins movies before we consider ANOTHER sequel?
They've got such a money maker with the idea of making multiple origins films that they shouldn't have to actually touch the idea of a sequel for a long time.
If they make a Wolverine 2 it'll probably just be so that they can give Hugh Jackman something else to do.
  • Man is Wolverine 1 going to even be good?
  • Ms. Marvel or Hack/Slash would be two very good choices to go with.

Hack/Slash is already being made into a film but i heard they want Fox as Cassie. If you ask me i think they should go with someone that can act and not just be hot.
  • Wolverine is overplayed if you ask me, i mean what is this going to be, Wolverine: Part Five. Because those X-men films weren't about the X-men.
  • I guess I'm glad I knew this wasn't true before thinking it was. Sometimes I wish I had read this before the update that makes it worthless to have this article.

I was there last night, and although Simon did say he was approached to write the sequel to Wolverine, and that his manger , who was stood next to him at the time, said 'yes' it was a jokey example of the kind of things that can happen when you win an Oscar. His comment was something along the lines of being asked to write the sequel to a film he didn't even know existed and which hasn't been released yet.
  • AICN published an email scoop without double-checking? *SHOCK HORROR*. This smells all kinds of fishy. Even if it does happen to be true, sounds like the screenwriter has a lot of research to do. Research item 1: What is a 'Wolverine'. I mean, Heaven's above!
  • adam b
but the scenario i reported DID happen. the poster above you was at the event and confirms that he stated that he had been offered the role of scripting wolverine 2 and his manager said yes. why would i make this situation up?
  • Tim
I can't believe you guys reported this, heh
  • gah
I dont know much about the legal side of the film world, but I wish Marvel Studios would just take back all it's characters. Fox and Sony (mostly Fox) have been screwing these movies up big time. I love the first couple Xmen and Spiderman but honestly thats about it. And those films were a long time ago.
  • peter, no offense, but are you fucking high?!?

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine covers most of the Wolverine mythology, and doesn’t leave much room for more stories to take place before X-Men"

what?!? this movie isn't even going to have one scene in japan! there's the time he spent feral in canada, being the leader of alpha flight, a whole list of rogues that we haven't seen yet, his son, the list could go on for a loooooooooooong ass time man. i don't know the legality of using all those characters, or how easy it would be to tie the stories into the continuity that fox established with this and the other x-men films, but most of the wolverine mythology covered in one movie?!? they can't even scratch the surface!

also, where did you hear jackman didn't want to reprise his role as wolverine? i saw an interview from the australia promotional interview where he said, not jokingly, that he could do at least 5 more of these movies.
  • One might even say: "bad dum *SNIKT*"
  • Props to that perfect onomonopoea. I could hear it as I read it.
