ltroiresubtitled

Yesterday we told you that the DVD/Blu-Ray release of Let The Right One In featured drastically altered subtitles from the theatrical release — horribly dumbed down, and missing much of the dark humor of the original critically acclaimed release. Fans of the film were outraged (which they should be), and Magnet Releasing has finally issued a statement through the DVD website Digital Bits:

“We’ve been made aware that there are several fans that don’t like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version.”

For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, you will be able to tell in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package because it will read “SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH.” Magnet refuses to offer exchanges to anyone who has bought the altered version, which is really upsetting to me as a consumer.

If you ask me, the distributor should make every effort to take care of all the upset customers who purchased the dvd under the assumption that it would feature the same subtitles that were released in theaters. And from the sound of it, I doubt Magnet plans to recall/replace the previously pressed discs which are currently in stores which makes it almost impossible to purchase the movie through an online website like Amazon, because you don’t know what you’re going to get.

You can email Magnet at: dvd@magpictures.com

  • Magnolia email carpet bomb perhaps? Could they not even give us an option to email a proof of purchase and get a free download or something?
  • well, geez, Magnet, thanks for being pompous assholes. Why didnt you idiots use the ORIGINAL THEATRICAL SUBTITLES IN THE FIRST PLACE?????????????

There has to be something deeper in the story, there's something just not right. I want to know why the F they dumbed down the subtitles and whose idea it was. Bastards.

I will definitely rent the DVD again AFTER they bloody correct the subtitles!
  • They probably had some one in house translate it for cheaper than they could have gotten the rights to the theatrical subtitles.
  • Magnolia email carpet bomb perhaps? Could they not even give us an option to mail in a proof of purchase and get a free download or something?
  • "... going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version."

Releasing a film the way it was intended to be shown? What a novel idea.
  • *Shakes fist is general direction of the Let the Right One DVD that was purchased last week.* GRRRR!
  • Skadouche
What a fucking rip. I mean it's great and all that they finally came to their senses (after fan backlash). But they're not going to replace the ones that ppl already bought or recall the ones that are already out?! Now i gotta wait longer to have the real version?!

    MAGNET YOU'RE AN ANAL BEAD!
  • At least now someone is gonna post a full quality torrent with the good subtitles. Which in turn will be downloaded by me. That's what Magnolia gets for not offering me a return.
  • I am a first year law student so I (kind of) know what I am talking about. Chances are, there is a Consumer Protection Act or something similar within the state wherein a product must be fit for the purpose. The good thing is that usually stores (and not just manufacturers) are liable. Therefore, you should be able to take back the DVD to the local store and get a full refund because the product is not what you intended to purchase. If the store starts giving you shit, I would suggest that you bring up your legislated and protected rights as a consumer and that the store should not want to lose your business.

For an example from real life. I received Ricky Gervais' Extras on DVD as a gift and realized months later that the Christmas Special was in burned incorrectly and was really Planet Earth Disc 2. I took it to HMV without a receipt and they gave me a brand new DVD without any hassle. At all.

This comment is pretty f-ing long but I hope it helps some of my fellow frustrated nerds.

(Note - sometimes lawyers are a good thing.)

fuck them, tomorrow amazon is getting a call. I'm posting this on reddit too. email carpet bomb the works.
  • andrew aiello
BTW my disc is actually defective the subtitle selection "narrative subtitles" doesn't actually have any subtitles on it. NOTHING!
  • I just sent my email to dvd@magpictures.com. How about all of you? They should do some sort of mail-in exchange. Like Universal did when they goofed up the Jet Li's Fearless Director's Cut DVD. If not, I'll be returning my Blu-Ray to Amazon, for sure.
  • Amazing, what on earth were they thinking in the first place? Why would anyone who saw the film and then buy the dvd want a different translation? I hope they change the font quality to the style used theatrically because that large fuzzy font I saw on those screen grabs were horrible. Magnet Releasing come out of this looking very silly indeed and no doubt it will hurt its future distribution opportunities somewhat.
  • I also just sent an email, i mean this is crazy no exchange? We didn't ask for a drastic rewrite..
  • Joel
I sent an email as well. If they don't do an exchange I suppose I'll sell the BD I have and rebuy it (something I had to do when Lionsgate released Lord of War in a cropped version). But I really hate giving them my money twice.
  • I guess this is good news because we as fans made a difference in the future of this DVD/BR, but it does suck that they're not going to try to do anything about the already existing copies that have the wrong subtitles.
  • Joe R.
I know its not worth noting as dubbed audio usually sucks balls, but the translation for the dub seems to be in line with the original theatrical subtitles. Still not very good voice acting though.
  • Not sure how blu-ray updates work, but is it possible the new subtitle can be an update in the near future? Someone who knows more about BR let me know
  • Bob_Bobbson
Yes, a new subtitle track could be downloaded for the blu-ray through BD-Live.
The only problem with that is that the blu-ray had to be made with BD-Live enabled on it. Let the Right One In is not BD-Live enabled.
  • Damn, I'll have to wait till after the switch then. Thanks!
  • Jay
Magnet gets the asshat of the month award.
  • That is one e-mail that I'm glad I sent!
  • Chris
this is bullshit i already but the fu*ken movie!! thanks magnet :)
  • Chris
    Bought*
  • Alex
Fuck Magnet. Just don't ever buy any of their releases ever again and spread the news!!! Word of mouth is still alive!!
  • Ralph
But just think, all of you now own a collector's item
Let the Right One In: The Twilight Translation
  • Palmer
Bunch of cheap bastards if you ask me.
  • Glad I didn't get it yet.
  • Infrafan
Well, maybe this whole fiasco will teach other manufacturers to not toy with such things so this doesn't happen again. It's injustice that people who've already purchased it won't be getting a refund an/or replacement. Hate to rub in to those people, but I'm glad for once I'm always a little behind with home video purchases. But thanks to /film for letting me and others like me know of this incident.
  • Just ridiculous. I guess I'm glad I didn't buy the DVD yet, but just imagine if Universal had done this with the Back to the Future Part 2 DVD release with the incorrect aspect ratios? And that was just part of the film, not the entire dialogue track.

You'd think a smaller distributor would actually be *more* willing to make their customers happy over a larger one. How disappointing.

For those who purchased it from a retail location: Most places have 14-30 day return policies. I would probably just check wherever you bought it (Best Buy, Fry's, Target) for the new subtitles on the back of the box and if you find one, exchange it as being defective.
  • bb6640
Great, just great! Now I am going to have to shell out another $30 to get the corrected BR edition. Screw Magnet.
  • I was pissed enough to send them an e-mail, so I wonder how many others sent magnolia a rather nasty message. Anybody else do the same thing as me?
  • At least they are changing it rather than having the one with the bad subtitles in circulation.
  • /ambient
I sent an angry e-mail too. I'm really happy they're changing the subtitles, but I'm going to end up spending $40 on a single-disc DVD!!! I hope they change their minds on a disc-replacement program. I love "Let the Right One In" so I have to buy a new copy. I wanted to let Magnet know that their effort was half-assed.
  • bb6640
    Yep
  • freemachine
This is a great case for a class-action law suit, providing enough people ban together.
  • This is a complete bullshit way to support piracy Magnet. I sent an email and cancelled my purchase of Timecrimes. (I believe this is Magnet as well) Everybody, even if you didn't purchase the DVD/BD should email Magnet and let them know how offended we are as a movie going public that they thought they should dumb down a movie's original subtitles for us. What the fuck Magnet?
  • Fir3Wolf
My question is when with the new versions be releasing? Are they being put in stores right away or are they doing a kind of re-release of it on dvd? I'm just glad I didn't buy it when I wanted to and Magnet really screwed some ppl on this deal.
  • Ray M.
I too sent in an e-mail. I have yet to purchase the film and I am glad that my bills prevented me from doing so! Here's hoping Magnet takes care of those who supported them in the first place! I'm pullin' for you guys and encouraging others to have their voices heard!

    Good luck!
  • freemachine
The only worse news than this is that Hollywood is remaking "Let the Right One In" for a 2010 release...bastards.
  • Chris
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Blu-Ray internet connectivity one of the features that should allow companies to fix this after the fact? I don't know if this comes with Blu-Live or whatever it's called, but if it does I don't see why they can't just have Blu-Ray owners download it, so at least they're covered.
  • Bob_Bobbson
The Blu-Ray needs to be authored to be compatible with BD-Live. This movie wasn't.
  • Chris Williams
Does anyone remember the fantastic subtitles that were on Night Watch Theatrical Version DVD compared to the crappy ones on the Day Watch DVD? This is just another case of dumbing down for the average consumer. They should have just waited for the remake.
  • Goro
During an economic recession, the best course of action is to screw your customers. No one should rebuy this DVD. Rent-and-burn or torrent. Seems like having PURCHASED a faulty (admittedly so) DVD gives you the right to a free coy of the fixed one.
  • I was wondering about that. I don't like dubs, but it is the only shot i have at my wife watching a dark, foreign vampire noir!
  • I concur. The reality is that 90% of people won't know or care, so I understand not issuing a recall or exchange program.

They could have easily just ignored the problem and hit delete on the 2 or 3 dozen complaint emails.
  • B33ker
I emailed to let them know I'd be returning my copy and waiting for the new one, and encouraging them to offer some sort of exchange lest the fans word of mouth completely ruin their credibility in the long run.
  • Is Timecrimes going to have messed up Subtitles too?! We should all email them and ask :-)
  • justbreakingthings
Great. Now I have to learn Swedish, too? It wasn't enough to find out that Hong Kong films mean learning Cantonese and Mandarin? I guess I will have to just enjoy the amazing cinematography until the originals clear the shelves at Frys/Best Buy, and then file it away with my Directors Cut of BladeRunner...

If you are still frustrated about Magnet not offering an exchange program I would recommend emailing Mark Cuban who owns Magnet/Magnolia/2929/Landmark and let him know your frustrations.

He's the one guy who actually has the authority to make the exchange program happen. Explain to him how you think it is unreasonable to purchase two copies of a movie just so you can get the correct one, and that because of it it is going to adversely effect your opinion and your willingness to purchase products from his other media brands that distribute his films
