kevin smith

In part 4 of Lee Stanhan’s interview with Kevin Smith, the filmmaker talks about the dark side of the internet. Most director’s I know subscribe to the google alerts for their name and pay attention to what is said about them online, but they don’t interact back with the fans or critics. Smith has invested more time on the internet than most of the people in Hollywood, taking it to an extreme. Kevin was the first filmmaker to build a website community around his films. But outside of the fandom exists a lot of hateful criticism. It’s interesting to hear about this world from the side of a filmmaker, and to learn about Smith’s changing views about this world. Watch the video interview after the jump.

  • Seriously, people need to grow a thick skin if/when they become famous, now that there's so much info on the Internet and lot of haters. Some haters even set up a forum to talk shit about me and made death threats after I appeared in a newspaper. I can't deal with that shit. Good for Kevin Smith for taking it with great stride.
  • Fanboys Do you want to be an old bitter man like Kevin Smith was becoming? Good me either.. "Why the F#@K aren't I trying to stick her in the a$$ on a regular basis." Direct Kevin Smith Quote. lol I still like him...

    Kevin Smith is lame.

Wow I have a new respect for Kevin Smith.....

  • Interesting stuff. Explains why he used internet comments as Jay and Bob's motivation to get to Hollywood in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
  • yeah his wife is a total dog. lol what a bunch of douches
  • yeah his wife is a total dog. lol what a bunch of douches. on a serious note, i find kevin smith's humour and writing to be average, and he may not have that any distinctive visual style, but i totally respect him because he stays true to himself in a culture and business that can rip his soul apart. kevin, if you're reading this, i know that might seem like a backhanded compliment, but good for you!
  • Right on. It has to be found within yourself to determine what is right and wrong.
Now, i'm not saying to be close minded but mainly with directers, go with your gut.
It's destined for every great director to have a least one floppy film (and I even thought Zack and Miri was fantastic).
It make me love Kevin Smith more that he truely cares about his audience, even if it drives him mad.

    Fuck the haters.

The fact that Smith is a minor celebrity with a cult-like following certainly exacerbates the situation, but his point can be said about anyone who is active in any online community. There is this sort of primal "I must prove my superiority" attitude that comes out online that doesn't come out in real life because the look of utter disgust in people's faces will be tangible in real life as opposed to text on a screen you can dismiss as ignorant.

I applaud Kevin because I was exactly like him for the longest time. I just fed that troll with an endless supply of meat. But the thing is the troll never loses his appetite, so all you end up doing is throwing time and sanity away.

Life is too short for participating in trolling, whether it be you trolling or feeding the troll. Truth be told, this just further solidifies my get rich quick business idea to write software that is totally client independent and allows you to redact content from douchebags so it looks like it never existed. Imagine that; a piece of software that allows you to right-click a user and say "ignore forever". That is the world I want to live in.

    Kevin,
Your movies do not suck. You did not sell out. You're an independent filmmaker at heart. Keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep buying tickets and DVDs.

    Signed,

  • I don't even understand how can someone say something so mean and cruel. Kevin Smith rocks!
  • Thorloth
The f words increased exponentially. Besides that I found the interview very interesting.
  • im pumped for his new movie. cant wait to see what he does with it like every other film he's released. and he makes me laugh good shit
  • BobaFett
Kevin has one of the freshest attitudes about people and interacting with his fans. Perhaps if other filmmakers would take a hint from this attitude, they might learn something about connecting with their fans regarding criticisms of their craft, as well as bettering themselves.
  • Not only are his movies hilarious....But Kevin can make you laugh simply standing on a stage talking...Not telling Jokes but talking about life experiences in a humorous way.

Keep it up Kevin, you were hilarious is Toronto last month!

I think that honest, good people have no intention in wasting their time on posting hate on the internet, because they are too busy enjoying their lives and doing other things. That being sad, we are left with all the assholes who hate themselves and everyone else. Although I'm no celebrity, I have almost stopped entirely from reading comments and message boards because it was literally making me hate the entire human race. Good luck on your next movie Kevin, your movies have always been awesome!
  • Wasabi Steak
Smitty said a lot of truth in that segment. The whole series of interviews with Les have been great.
  • lukeg37
I wanna stick it Kevin Smith's wife ass too! Hold her by the dumbo ears and scream "Oh what a lovely tea party"
  • Skip90291
The Internet brings out really deep-seated instincts in us: pack mentality (brutality), aggression, plain old rudeness, not to mention our innermost biases and prejudices. It does trigger something in a lot of us. We get on an online forum and need to connect with other people, and then they say "You're an idiot," or "I totally don't agree," and the game is on. Things spiral out of control, and then we all say something we regret. One day, they might offer online etiquette classes in high school, because our Internet postings CAN come back to haunt us later. The "stupid" thing you posted while drinking beer and surfing the Net can sit on a message board for years. It makes us all meaner and more desperate. I don't like what it does to me, and I certainly don't like a lot of the shocking hate I read from others. Can't change it. Guess I should just step out of it (as Kevin Smith has done). But here I am posting anyhow...

One needs to go no further than Aint It Cool News to see the Kevin Smith hate machine (along with the hate machine for anything really). As soon as people are anonymous they are pieces of shit, weird that more people aren't assholes on this site.

Good for Smith though, I imagine it would be very difficult for a director to not look at these things, because our whole lives we have people encouraging our creative and professional pursuits, even when we fail, and to be able to see thousands of people saying you are a piece of shit and a hack would be quite difficult I'd say.
  • Kevin, I know you read Slashfilm, so if you're reading this, you should know, you're fucking awesome.

    ...And your wife is hot.
  • Tonks
the wayne gretzky eBay comment cracked me up after listening to Smodcast! Big love for gretzky (even if I am from the UK and my only knowledge of the man was a cartoon where he fought crime opposite michael jordan)
  • guy knows what hes doing
  • That's a damn honest interview. Kevin: Exhale! Reasonable people know you're trying to make an earnest honest living doing something original, even if they don't like any of your films.
  • freemachine
Holy Crap! Is Smith dressed like a Jedi?
  • nillerJ
It's his 'I am fat and this hides it' -attire :D
  • unless my eyes deceive me... hells yes he is
  • RRM
Kevin, Your wife is beautiful, your movies are beautiful. Thanks for such an honest discussion about how the Internet can affect creative people. That takes a lot of courage, and you've always had a lion's worth of courage. The thing is, the Internet allows everyone to give an opinion, and a lot of those opinions are worthless. It's just people who are jealous of someone else's success. There are a lot of losers out there. They're probably over-represented on the Internet, because they don't have anything better to do. A 13 year old who has never created a movie herself is unqualified to write about someone who has made a long string of challenging, successful films.
  • ZimZamson
Kevin Smith is an awesome writer & director.

Everything he does is incredibly entertaining - whether it's writing a movie, directing a movie, his podcast or even this YouTube interview.

Keep on keeping on brother! The sooner you forget about the internet haters the better.
  • We all love bush shots!
  • When I read this title I thought it was going to be about 4chan :(
  • Smith PWNS
  • Kevin Smith, you go man. Don't worry about what others think, just go for it.
  • I like how Kevin Smith always has something to say no matter what the subject is. He can talk about anything for any length of time and it still has strong message.
  • I like how Kevin Smith always has something to say no matter what the subject is. He can talk about anything for any length of time and it still can have a strong message.
  • Naffman
Jen is cool. Kevin has the right to attack anyone that talks shit about his wife
  • Lono
I totally agree. He is just about the most over-rated film maker in the business. If it weren't for hoardes of nose-picking teenagers who care nothing about quality so long as you say "dick" or "fart" every few minutes, he'd hardly have an audience at all. So he better thank his lucky stars there are plenty of dumb people in the world. Enough for him to have carved out a dumb little niche of his own. I congratulate him on that. Oh, but I guess that just makes me a hater, huh? Cuz you can't possibly have legitimate criticism of Kevin Fucking Smith, can you?!
  • /ambient
Are you two really that annoying in real-life?
  • John Guard
Kevin, you are the most OVERRATED figure in films, comics and on the internet.
you have been riding the sucess of CLERKS and have never made clever film since.
  • future
I'll assume you say this as you believe smith is not good at what he does. So the question I have for you is:

Please show me where Kevin Smith is Rated so Highly that it leaves you to come to the conclusion by your personal standards and opinion that he is "OVERrated".

The internet provides anonymity to the ignorant. The "haters" are the drug dealers, trying to push their ignorant opinion upon anyone naive enough to be influenced by them.

    There I said it.
  • Slappy
I love movies but I will never understand how intensely mean-spirited people can be about these topics. That being said, in the now slim chance you are actually reading this Kevin, I'm one of those people that enjoy your films but have never posted about it one way or the other. I imagine there are a lot of us. I thought Zack & Miri was great. There, I said it.
  • Marty
    Seriously, he did win.

No one gives a shit about what anyone on here has to say, but people do care what Kevin Smith has to say, that's why we're all on here! And why do people care what Smith has to say? Because he won. He did it. He achieved his dream. He's living it, he's a fucking filmmaker. He writes stuff and then gets it made by big fucking studios. Millions of people are competing and working their ass off day in and day out for what he has. He worked just as hard, and he made it.

The only people that suck are the people that think they have a right to criticize that.
