Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo Gets U.S. Release

ponyo
Legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s latest movie Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea will finally be getting a domestic release. The film was released last July in Japan, and has since grossed over ¥15.0 billion ($153.1 million). Disney’s John Lasseter has been working with Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy to make the American release of the movie, Miyazaki’s “biggest hit ever Stateside.” Spirited Away earned a little more than $10 million stateside on 714 screens, and the plan is to give Ponyo an even wider release. The movie, retitled just Ponyo, hits theaters on August 14th 2009, and Disney has announced the English-language voice cast.

Noah Cyrus provides the voice of a baby goldfish named Ponyo who desires to be a human, and gets her wish. She runs away from her home in the sea and befriends a five-year-old human boy named S?suke (voiced by Frankie Jonas). Other cast members include Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White.

I would hope that /Film readers have seen some of Miyazaki’s films, but for those of you who haven’t, here are the cliff notes: Miyazaki is considered not only the Walt Disney, but also in some ways the Steven Spielberg of Japan. To give you an example of his success, Spirited Away overtook Titanic to become the highest grossing film in Japanese history. His films aren’t just commercial successes but also critically acclaimed both in Japan and in America.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke have won Picture of the Year at the Japan Academy Prize (basically the equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards). Spirited Away also holds the honor of being the only anime film to ever win an American Academy Award. If you haven’t seen any of his movies, I recommend that you run (not walk) to the store right now and buy (not rent) Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Tororo and Howl’s Moving Castle.

I’ve embedded the Japanese trailer for Ponya below.

  • Finally!
  • Teresa
    I can wait!
  • Yay! Miyazaki's movies are always awesome, way better than Pixar and Disney combined.
  • Finally! Can't wait to see this opening night :D
  • I also like Kiki's Delivery Service. It's not as good as Spirited Away, though, but still a fun movie to watch.
  • Me too if I can. Although I'm really surprised that it will be in theaters. Sometimes we don't treat our imports very well, like cutting twenty minutes from Casshern for no reason at all. Grrr.
  • Yay!! I can't wait.
  • 10cent
It will. I saw both Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle in run-of-the-mill theaters, so I don't see this being any different.

Glad to see many high-end names on that voice over list!
  • I saw Spirited Away in theaters. 'Twas magical. Plus in this very article it says they are going for a wider release than ever before.

Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki never disappoints. I'm glad there's a wide release for this film, good move from John Lasseter.
  • The disney dubs for Miyazaki films are hands down the gold standard of dubbing. And this one has Tina Fey!
  • Gordon
I saw this movie when I was in Japan last fall. It wasn't subtitled and I don't understand much Japanese, so while I got the general idea of the story, some of the details were lost on me. I'll be glad to finally find out what the heck happened.

It's a great looking and sounding movie. Thankfully, the visuals of film have a language all of their own, so I did find myself laughing at the right parts.
  • I see that now. I just didn't expect it.
  • Kiki's was pretty good (loved the feeling of the town). I'm not a fan of Whisper of the Heart, though I know it wasn't by Miyazaki.
  • He wrote it.
  • Mike
Anything from Miyazaki is just amazing. Spirited Away is still one of my favorite movies to this day. AND TINA FEY IS GONNA BE IN IT! Wow I can't wait.
  • I just audibly shrieked.
    ^_^
  • dagreenman18
Well they took their sweet fucking time, didn't they? Can't wait!!

also, WHOO TINA FEY AND LIAM NEESON!!!! BTW who is "Frankie Jonas"?
  • I think we can safely say that Miyazaki's critical acclaim extends beyond Japan and America Peter.
  • I'm pretty sure he's the Jonas Brother's little kid brother :
  • Can't wait to see this, Miyazaki's films are amazing. I think I read somewhere that he wanted to use as little CGI as possible in this film.
  • i know, it was not my intention to say that it was only limited to US/Japan
  • This movie was a bit childish for my liking...but the animation was so wonderful I couldn't stop watching, not my favorite Miyazaki film but still quite nice.
  • Risa
I would go to see all his movie in the theater twice.. if they came out again.
Ponya is a wonderful and creative film.
I will be telling everyone I know young and old alike not to miss this in the theater.
  • Whenever I think of Miyazaki, I think Nausicca, my favorite of his great filmography. From the trailer, I can infer this will be quite different from Nausicca, but I'm still waiting with open arms!
  • Daniel
  • Big fan of Miyazaki! I've never been disappointed by a Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki film. Among my favorites are "The Castle of Cagliostro" and "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (and every other Miyazaki work for that matter).

    Can't wait for Ponyo. It does seems a bit lighthearted but I loved <font style="color: #006400 !important; font-family:&quot;Lucida Grande&quot;;font-weight:normal;font-size:12px;position:static;" color="#006400">My Neighbor Totoro</font> so I'll probably end up loving this film despite that. I also remember <font style="color: #006400 !important; font-family:&quot;Lucida Grande&quot;;font-weight:normal;font-size:12px;position:static;" color="#006400">hearing</font><div id="preLoadLayer4" style="position: absolute; z-index: 4000; top: -32px; left: -18px; display: none; "><img src="http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.gif" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; "> a while back that Ponyo was going to be Hayao's last film. I certainly hope thats not the case because this man is truly a master in the field.
  • Goldfish_hime
Have seen it(have it on dvd I got in town-obviously someone brought a camera into the cinema) I have to say its not the best movie, although I did enjoy it anyway as all Miyazaki fans are bound to. Smacks of a little mermaid type storyline, and the animation style was refreshing- it looks and feel almost like something done in the early 80's before the advent of computers.
Will be looking for statuettes to come out in the future as well as any anime cels
  • Goro
PONYO is great. It's a bit of a throwback movie, imho, to TOTORO/KIKI days. The story is simple and touching (based on LITTLE MERMAID, iirc). Personally, i've felt the recent Ghibli movies have been on a downward trend, with EARTHSEA being the capper. PONYO was a return to glory and hopefully Miyazaki doesn't make good on his annual threat to retire! :)
  • Goro
..AND it will be so nice to go watch a traditionally animated film instead of a CG one! Hopefully if this (and the Frog Princess) do very well, there will be a resurgence of traditional animation.
  • Nogo
I love Spirited Away, but Howl's Moving Castle has a very weak storyline. He should of stuck to the simplicity of the book.
  • INSANELY HUGE fan of Miyazaki. Howl's Moving Castle is in my top ten favorite movies and Princess Mononoke is in my top thirty. Really excited for this on many levels but more so because this will be my first time seeing a Miyazaki movie on the big screen. Awesome voice cast-announced awhile ago actually. I was wondering when /Film was going to write up a piece on it. Anyway, so happy about this (I mean seeing Miyazaki and Tina Fey's names in the same boat just brings a fucking smile to my face.)
  • fghshdsgjfyj
i don't really care who is in the english cast and would actually prefer that they just released it in japanese with subtitles. too much meaning is lost in the translation.
  • Just saw Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind... Brilliant! As all Miyazakis films!
Anybody else agree with me that this must have been of great influence to the Wachowski brothers and their creative team when they gave birth to The matrix?
