Cool Stuff: Mark Brooks “Starbuck”

star buck

Mark Brooks wondered what currency might look like in a galaxy ruled by the Empire. Created for the Star Wars Fan Days in 2007, the result is the “Starbuck”.

As a guest artist and I wanted to do something for the show. There’s a lot of artwork out there most as posters, lithographs or prints so I wanted to do something different. While watching The original Star wars I realized that talk of money is thrown around quite a lot but you never actually see it (other than Han flipping the bartender a coin after shooting Greedo). I thought it would be cool to design a piece of Imperial currency as I saw it. I designed it mostly after American money but used some European influences as well.” … “Darth Vader was used on the 1 credit bill for the same reason the most famous American, George Washington, was used on the one dollar bill. It’s the first standard credit the Empire uses to measure it’s rate to other currency so I used the most recognizable figure from Star Wars. The Death Star is is under construction instead of a completed Death Star to show the growth of the Empire and it’s ever expanding reach. It’s symbolic more than anything else. Yes, they probably used universal credit cards or something else but I thought this would be cool, nothing more, nothing less.”

  • I don't think so. They would probably have used gemstones or a precious element (maybe water?) as currency. The problem is that, this artist can't think outside the box, no offense.
  • Yeah. Thats been lucasarts problem since the 70's and Lucas's fking downfall for 30 years. Making the most populated visually interesting BORING sci-fi.
(Excluding the original trilogy, and the clone wars shorts, just to clarify.)
  • Star Trek Right?
Um isn't the established currency the credit?
  • Wow! This is really neat! I would totally buy a bill from this guy. Get some nice paper that looks and feels like paper money and print out some of these! Very beautiful.
  • Nice touch with the Sidious watermark.
  • Where? Do you mean the signature? I don't see a watermark..
  • the force is strong with you my boy
  • DUH! Thats been lucasarts problem since the 70's and Lucas's fking downfall for 30 years.
  • This is just an artistic interpretation of what a bill would look like. As the artist pointed out, they probably DID use some sort of credit card or the like, but you can't do something like this with a card..
  • the name makes me only think of the coffee franchise... as for currency, they used republic credits which im guessing by the technology they had they wouldnyt use silly paper money... but i'm hoping i can grab some coffee with this currency
  • I first saw this a while ago and I remember being really impressed. I still am.
It's not THAT realistic, but that's stated above. It's just cool.
  • jank
thx 1138 on the left side?
  • This is really old. I've had one printed in my wallet for a year.
  • If they used paper I always thought it would be rather plain with just the imperial logo on it.
  • The economy wouldn't be as bad as it is if this is what the currency looked like.
  • Tom
in star wars they used credits not bucks.
  • samu
Would they call themselves The First Galactic Empire? (Did they in the films?) The name implies at least a second Galactic Empire, and therefore the impermanence of the first, which is not something a regime like that would be likely to acknowledge. How, for that matter, would they know there would be a second? Maybe midichlorians muttered it to them.
  • I like everything about it but the modern typography, it looks weird.
  • Where would geeks be without their daily dose of Star Wars junk?
  • I would be absolutely bored all day doing normal things. Stuff like this keeps the child part of me still alive.
  • Beth
What's the conversion rate of Star bucks to Stanley nickles?
  • When Palpatine declared himself emperor in episode 3, he mentioned in his speech that he was forming the first galactic empire, meaning there hasn't been one before it.
  • this looks great. You would think that they'd use a complete Death Star instead of a Death Star-in-progress though.
  • Interesting point. I agree they probably wouldn't have put that, but it is in my opinion more visually appealing.
