i love you phillip morris

Britain’s Times Online is claiming that I Love You, Phillip Morris (not to be confused with I Love You, Man, which is in theaters today) might be going direct-to-dvd in the United States. The Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor comedy premiered at Sundance in January to fairly good reviews. Distributors were turned off by “the graphic homosexual sex depicted in the film,” and the film has yet to score domestic theatrical distribution.

According to the report, the movie is currently being re-edited in “a last ditch attempt to find an American distributor. If it fails to do so, it will go straight to DVD.” I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m shocked that a film like Brokeback Mountain or Milk can get theatrical distribution but a comedy starring Jim Carrey is thought about as unmarketable.

The movie is adapted from Steve McVicker’s 2003 novel, and based on a true story. Carrey plays Russell, a criminal who falls in love with his cell mate, Phillip Morris (McGregor). After Morris’ release from prison, Russell attempts a variety of bizarre prison escapes in hopes of reuniting with the love of his life. The movie was apparently pitched as “Catch Me if You Can meets Brokeback Mountain“. The screenplay was written by the team who did Bad Santa. Film School Rejects said the film feels like “a mixture between the silliness and absurdness of a Farrelly brothers movie, but with the intelligence of a Coen brothers flick.”

I understand there is a graphic gay sex scene in the first 10 minutes, but I think audiences in more liberal cities don’t really care. This film doesn’t need a huge wide release. It was filmed independently for only $13 million, and has already sold theatrical distribution in UK markets. It seems strange to me that an American distributor wouldn’t at least take a chance putting the film out and a few hundred theaters. I would think that Jim Carrey’s star value alone would be enough to make the money back. As Devin from Chud said, “you can make 30 to 40 million on this movie if you’re smart”.

  • It shouldn;t be a problem. this will be a great film - as it is a true story. IT SHOULD NOT BVE REFERRED TO AS A JIM CARREY film. No films should be referred to by one name. It is a collaborative effort, and a film should be referred to by it's name. Calling it a Jim carrey film automatically makes it terrible ( see the nu,ber 23, the #3 worst film ever). Let's avoid that tag and use the film name -- which if you see my duplicity comment is another problem. problems, problems, at least it is friday. love ya slash film!
  • TheFeltcher
I heard that there is a lot of feltching sequences in this film.
  • Alex
Figures. We Americans want boobies, obscene violence, and rap/metal soundtracks. It's a gross generalization, but you get where I am going.
  • dan
this is why people think Americans are idiots...along with a few other things, of course
  • Brody
Is it just me or am I the only one suprised that no one has picked this up? Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor = at least 50 Million. I'd bet my house on it.
  • This drives me so fucking crazy.
    AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Why is it so wrong for 2 dudes to KISS(Or Fuck) , but Kate Winslet can show off her tits like nudity isn't a problem, and then fuck a 15 year old.
Plus this is a COMEDY for christ sakes.
  • u said it right
  • Gregory from Jamaica
Everyone has an anus. only man have penis. only woman have vagina. Man and woman fuck (or kiss) is natural. Penis goes in vagina (makes baby and the world lives). When penis play sword fight with each other or enters the anus, the only thing you are doing is meddling in shit. No production, no progression, no procreation (and that is fucked up!). The comedy is used as an instrument to make wrong looks right. Its (here as) an instrument to help make homosexuals and homosexuality seem normal and thus acceptable. Shame! Shame! Shame!
  • Tommy
You dumb religious twat... It's not used an instrument to make wrongs look right. Gays aren't only about sex for one. And for two, at least someone isn't making babies because all you pathetic ignorant asses are just overpopulating the planet and fucking over our whole race. And to top it all off, I bet you're a little bicurious... Just in denial because of what your "good book" says. Either way, Be a good person and read the entire thing. You should not hate or judge anybody, according to the Holy Bible... which is probably your reason to spew hatred shit. But yeah, just sit back, shut the fuck and keep your bullshit to yourself. Your dick inside a chick isn't fucking divine man. And you don't have to be gay to like anal sex by the way. Girls and guys can both enjoy it if they have a desire to. If so ok, if not ok too... but you shouldn't judge. I know since I'm wasting time replying to you, I can't say much about this... but go get a life and stop spreading your stupidity and ignorance on websites.

    Thanks!
  • Alex
someone will eventually pick it up. it will probably be a small-ish distributor but someone will.
  • Palmer
I think editing it for an American audience is a bad choice. I mean, since it involves homosexuality, what's the point for editing it if the audience that would see it wouldn't care?
  • Kip
    Your mom goes to college.
  • weird how this movie is getting blocked but South Park's Team America did not
  • yeah, it's so fucking pathetic. Americans want to see 2 girls kiss, but they can't handle 2 guys being in love. GET THE FUCK OVER IT. I hate homophobic assholes.
  • Tap Zepol
At least that's what the distributors think. I personally despise when people speak for me and the people I associate with as in "Our generation is" or "Our people". It might be cliche, but speak for yourself.
  • yep.
  • yeah. I dont even like Jim Carrey, I'm more a fan of Ewan Macgregor
  • I really want to see this movie. What a goddamned outrage. Americans CAN handle graphic gay sex scenes in movies... this movie will do fine in big US cities like you said, Peter, but it won't do well in Bible Belt areas. who cares anyway. Those homophobic morons need to taught a lesson or two about diversity.
  • adamluo
So it's okay for you to call out people that won't watch the movie because of what it depicts and then turn around and refer to an entire region of the country as "homophobic morons"? I'm not questioning your statement that the movie won't do well down in the Bible Belt, but you're being pretty hypocritical.
  • HOMO_NOT_FAN
Homosexuality is a crime and a sin.

Try and refute it. I dare you.

Yeah but Dude Love is a different thing altogether.
  • "Gay love rocks!
    - Leviticus 20:18
  • "Gay love rocks!"
    - Leviticus 20:18
  • Tommy
    haha, love the quote!
  • freemachine
They should just release the film in the U.S. market "as is", then let it succeed or fail on it's own merits. The movie sounds stupid and I probably wouldn't see it, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be modestly successful. Look at that Kirk Cameron Christian film "Fireproof". Again, that movie sounded stupid and I didn't go to see it. However, Fireproof found an audience an is considered to be a success.
  • Andy
The biblical definition of abomination means something akin to "taboo"- not of the norm - not the "unholy affront to God's creation" that most uneducated Biblethumpers presume it to mean.
  • adamluo
Automatically makes it terrible? So Eternal Sunshine and Truman Show are "terrible"?
  • I would throw Man on the Moon and Bruce Almighty into that group too. Man on the Moon moreso than Bruce Almighty but still. You get the idea.
  • adamluo
Yeah, I like those movies too. I actually think Jim Carrey makes a lot more good movies than bad ones. A couple of his early comedies haven't held up over time (imo) and he's taken a couple bad projects, but no one has a perfect filmography. He doesn't try to hold onto past glory either, as evidenced by his not being involved with the "sequels" to The Mask and Dumb and Dumber.
  • filmkid
this is just stupid its alright to see two women kissing and stuff then when it come to guys oh the American Audience cant take that. if the movie is good and funny whats the big deal im not gay and i found this very stupid.
  • Simmerdown
Haha. This is funny. A fight over homosexuality is being fought in the comments section of a movie blog, because of a Jim Carey movie. Who gives a shit? Guys want to fuck other guys? whatever. Religions want to say its wrong? whatever. Tolerance means being tolerant to everyone, including the intolerant. And besides... this is ridiculous, it's a Jim Carey movie for gods sake. I doesn't matter, its a fucking movie, it shouldn't start a war between Christians and everyone else. Calm down everyone, its a movie blog. Let's talk about movies huh? Not ideology.
  • Snarky Bastard
The trouble is, it costs money to distribute films, and distributors often like to recoup that investment. It's crazy! It's like movie distribution companies are more concerned about making a profit than release movies!
  • Snary Again
    releasing movies. argh
  • freemachine
Tell me about it. There are a few older films ("A Month In The Country") I'd like to see reissued, but the distributors obviously don't think they can sell enough DVDs to make it profitable. There's another film (Polanski's "A Pure Formality) that was only released in Region 2 format and has now been discontinued.
  • Isn't that a Giusseppe Tournatore movie? Polanski just acted in it. But that was a good movie
  • I find it surprising that a distrubtion company won't even sign a deal for a limited release and a shame. I want to see this movie and not an edited version that some exec feels will be more accepted in America.
  • You should have added Bruce Almighty to that list. He wasn't involved in that sequel either.

And yeah, I agree with you. Look at The Cable Guy. Sure, the movie wasn't great but -he- was great. His character is forever embedded in my mind. That lisp, the Star Trek sound effects, the dunk scene where he uses Jack Black's back. It's classic Carrey. He has had a lot of good movies (Liar Liar comes to mind too). Just because he made a few bad ones (Fun With Dick and Jane and The Number 23) shouldn't bring him down as much as it seems to with the general public.
  • Yes, fight a generalizing group of people with a generalization!
  • Somehow I don't even think it has almost anything to do with the fact that it deals with homosexuality, well at least to certain extent.
Maybe it's the fact that Jim Carrey (and I still find the guy has something left in him) isn't as marketable? I don't know, just an idea.
Be it a theatrical release, or DVD release, I know I'll be watching this film.
  • A_B
This movie was SO GOOD! Fucking America needs to grow up. It deeply, deeply saddens me that this could happen, and that they'll be editing portions of it. I guarantee I know one of the scenes that would be cut, and it was so good and hilarious.

    POSSIBLE MINOR SPOILER

I'll just say, for those who saw it at Sundance like I did, I'm talking about the boat scene.

    END POSSIBLE SPOILER

If it does go straight to DVD, I recommend everyone buys this movie immediately.
This was in my opinion, one of Jim Carrey BEST. Drama-wise. And comedy-wise, his best since the mid 90's.

    God damn stupid America.
  • still sounds like the sequel to Thank You For Smoking.
  • Tap Zepol
I agree, we must stop Kate Winslet from raping anymore minors!
  • lol
  • If the movie is no good and they want to go to dvd, that's one thing. But I am upset that a movie won't get released as intended based on it's content, regardless of what the content is or how groups of people feel about it.
  • Ugh, stupid.
  • Tap Zepol
But, and I don't mean to point fingers here, but certain people's ideologies are interfering with a movie's release. I mean, granted, it would be rather, um, silly if we were arguing the virtues or sins of homosexuality in that article about Jetfire from Transformer or even arguing racial issues in the post about the Pac-Man/Ghostbusters t-shirt, but the topic we're arguing actually, in a way, pertains to the article being posted. And as for it being just a movie, well, this is a site about movies and it looks, to me at least, that a good majority of the people here might just be passionate about movies, how they are distributed, the censorship of films, and so on. I know, its crazy, but you'll have to tolerant towards us. Thank you.
  • Tap Zepol
    *be tolerant towards etc.
