Give 'em Hell Malone

Russel Mulcahy (Highlander, Resident Evil: Extinction) may be one of the last directors I would ever compare to John Woo, but I can’t help but think of Woo when viewing this promo trailer for his upcoming filmĀ Give ‘em Hell Malone, starring Thomas Jane. Set to the tune of “Bad to the Bone” (yes it’s been a while for me too), the promo shows us a well choreographed shootout with Jayne, his big-ass gun, and baddies galore.

It starts off with a long take that’s vintage Woo - there’s copious amounts of blood, seemingly infinite ammo, and balletic camera movements - and goes on to show Jane’s character as a force to be reckoned with. There are glimpses of other 70’s style action as well, but for me the shootout was the action highlight, and it was certainly enough to get me interested in this film.

It also stars Ving Rhames, Elsa Pataky, and Chris Yen (Donnie Yen’s little sister, who is currently trying to build up her action film career). Plot-wise, it’s nothing special: Jane stars as a detective who’s trying to protect something from thugs, yadda yadda. My biggest concern is with Mulcahy as the director, who hasn’t made a good film since Highlander (which, by the way, has not aged well at all). He always seemed visually talented, but somehow just kept doing shit projects. Perhaps this film could be his final turnaround?

With a release date currently set for April 1, 2009, and an independent theatrical distributor, I don’t suspect most of us will see this film until it hits DVD. At that point we’ll see if it lives up to its potential as a cult classic, or if it’s just another Mulcahy suck fest.

Discuss: Does this film look like a cult hit in the making to you? Was Highlander even a good movie?

  • You're right about Woo. I hope this isn't Shit.
  • I was hooked the moment the guy was trying to hold a gallon of blood from squirting out of his neck.

I'll keep my eyes on this one..
  • gah
Yeah I cant wait for this.

That looks so bad-ass and I can definitely can see Woo's influence. Two things caught my eye that I particularly liked. The first is the obvious mixing of decades. The thugs are all 70s, while Jane is straight out of the 50s. Second, I love Jane's gun. It looks like a semi-auto, but you can clearly see him using a speed-loader (which are used with revolvers). Either way, Jane and whatever kind of gun that is are going to fuck a lot of people up. Awesome!
  • "Ving Rhames as... A Car"
  • Haha, that's exactly what went through my head when his name popped up in front of the old coupe.
  • are you kidding me? This film needs a wide release. it looks b-b-b-b-b-bad ass.

The movie does look badass and I'm all for a good shoot em up. I really like Highlander and well sure the third RE movie was crap but this movie looks great.

I like Mulcahy myself, though it's hard to claim he's done anything much great. I do love Highlander, for all its cheesiness, and was pleasantly surprised when I saw "Swimming upstream", Mulcahy's 2003 drama about an Aussie swimmer whose name eludes me. It was a quiet actor-driven drama, rather than an SFX-fest, and had a similar vibe as Proyas' "Garage Days"- not what you'd expect at all from the director, but very enjoyable. So I'll never quite write the guy off, I think. BTW, this trailer looks cool, but so did the trailer for "Shoot 'em up" and look how that turned out.

    Fuck Yeah!

This could be Mulcahy's Come Back!

BTW Highlander aged very well. It made the transition to a Cult Classic without any problems. Yeah, it's an 80s flick and you can see it, but that does not make it dated.
  • I dunno what the hell that was or who was killing who all I know is that it was completely badass.
  • I've been waiting for this film since the first teaser trailer...it looks like could be a great bloody cult shoot em up...Mulcahy isn't that bad of a director...Highlander was amazing the sequel was a bit odd but still a great effort...he's also worked on Tales From The Crypt and Queer As Folk...Mulcahy is more than capable of making a decent gangster movie....

I can't believe Peter is even questioning the quality of the first Highlander....it's an 80's cult classic
  • Ha i dont know what to think of this film. I walked by the set everyday for a couple months and saw some pretty interesting things. I hope its a real fun film. It has a lot of landmarks im going to recognize

You all have to be joking. That does not look bad ass. The first half of it looks like some kids on youtube re-staging the final shootout from The Killer. Seriously, I love me some early 90's Woo, but this is pretty sad mimicry.
  • Looks great love the gritty look that the film has.
  • shadow
It's called a steadycam, use it.

looks horrible and dumb imo, and a poorly put together trailer.
  • Chromey
That is my cup of tea. Not my favorite tea. But I'll drink it and enjoy it anyway cause it keeps me warm at night.
  • _spinster_
it does a little bit, it needed dialogue in the trailer, and half of the trailer was them shooting eachother in that building.
  • It's Steadicam.

Nothing is worse than an unsmartass.
  • Greggory Basore
Am I the only who feels that the music and visuals didn't blend together well? Seriously, Bad to the Bone is a great song, and that was some cool footage, but... added together the two don't work for me.
  • a solid B movie none-the-less. i love how ving rhames wasnt seen at all during the entire trailer
  • It's Steadicam.

    Nothing worse than an unsmartass.

These trailers were put out by one of the production companies who worked on the film; not the director or the producers, as far as I know; I'm not connected, just a fan of Mulcahy who has taken an interest in this movie. But it seems to be working, I guess! Oh and that gun I recognized as Vash's from Trigun aka: http://airbornecombatengineer.typepad.com/photos/...

I liked Highlander. Loved it actually. Lambert is genius. Was disappointed when he was replaced in MK:A.

As for Malone, I like Tom Jane. He was fantastic as the Punisher. The trailer is cool. Will look out fer it.
  • Jamie
His direction on Highlander was superb, I'll probably watch this but I'm not expecting much
  • Looks pretty amazing until you see there is no recoil. Hope they fix those little details..
