Peter Segal In Talks to Direct Little Fockers

meet the parents

Little Fockers, the third film in the Meet The Parents trilogy is finally entering the casting stages — Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro and Owen Wilson are in talks with Universal to return. Meet the Parents and Meet The Fockers director Jay Roach will not helm the third film as he’s too busy prepping Dinner For Schmucks, which leaves an opening for a new director. Last month it was reported that the directing candidates were down to three names:

Paul Weitz (In Good Company, About a Boy)
David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models)
Peyton Reed
(Bring it On, Yes Man).

Who does Universal want to hire for the threequel? As it turns out, None of the above.

Get Smart director Peter Segal is the frontrunner to helm the project. The director was waiting to helm Get Smart 2, but became available after Steve Carell signed on to the new Shawn Levy comedy Date Night for Fox. Segal’s filmography includes Tommy Boy, The Longest Yard and 50 First Dates. Long time Stiller collaborator John Hamburg is writing the screenplay.  The film will obviously revolve around the children of Greg Focker (Stiller) and his wife, Pam (Teri Polo). No other details about the plot have yet been revealed. Owen Wilson’s role is expected to be expanded for the third film, and Universal hopes to begin production by year’s end.

At least Wain is funny and has a unique brand of humor. But Pete Segal? Ugh. I'm fairly confident he has no idea of what people laugh at. The packed theater I saw Get Smart in was dead silent. Not one laugh. What am I talking about? this is meet the fockers 3? of course they settled on mediocrity. Shame on Ben Stiller, who is actually funny in things he writes and directs.

  • Get Smart is horrible, so I agree with u there

i don't get why ben stiller just doesn't direct it, he did a good job with tropic thunder
  • i loved Tommy Boy, and throughly enjoyed 50 first dates.

This seems like a family comedy that's up his alley, and I think he'll do a good job with it. I'm glad they're dropping Streisand and Hoffman.
  • Not bad, this could still turn out to be good.. Will make a killing at the Box Office
  • It's a 3rd Fockers flick I think Segal is a perfectly fine choice. I'm not interested in the movie, but I don't think he's bad for the job.

I wonder why doesn't Ben Stiller just direct it ?
  • Love David Wain, but I don't think that this is a career move that would help him. I hope that he continues to make more original movies.

    And the trilogy is complete.

Is a third movie really necessary? The adversarial relationship between De Niro and Stiller was pretty much played out by the end of the second film, which didn't come close to being as funny as the first. I think a new "Fockers" film will just be a waste of a lot of good talent.
  • And his directorial attempt before that (Zoolander)...
  • gah
He also directed Reality Bites and The Cable Guy which are both vastly underrated.
  • Peter Douchal
Get Smart was fucking horrible. It wasn't funny as a comedy, or thrilling as an action movie. Wain just hit a mainstream homerun with Role Models and he deserves it way more than this talentless douche hack.
  • If this movie gets made, it will be a top contender for one of the worst trilogies ever made.
  • I wonder if they'll have to change the title when it gets released and use stick figures on the marketing posters. Seriously, how is porno worse than an ambiguation of fuck?
  • The 3rd film is a bad idea...and anyone but Peyton Reed. Even Peter Segal would be better.
  • I throw my support behind that comment.

Get Smart 2. Get lost............er.............2 you?
  • Harsh as the first one was quite good. Wait a minute. Matrix and Pirates and good first installments too. Do people not learn. Only the Star Wars prequels have bucked the trend of diminishing returns in respect of quality. And that's because they're all shit.
