Mission: Impossible 4 Being Prepped?

smapsmap

Aint It Cool News have run a story from one of their readers, reporting that Tom Cruise has appeared on Japanese television and revealed plans for the 4th Mission: Impossible film. See above, images from said show.

As I learned from ’supastring’, the AICN scooper, Cruise was a guest on SMAPxSMAP. According to Wikipedia, the show is hosted by the Idol group SMAP - presumably an aging Idol group as the show has apparently been on air for around 13 years (take that Take That). I’d guess that Cruise would have appeared in the first part of the show, Bistro Smap, in which a celebrity guest is served food and interviewed. So, basically, a boy band gave Cruise a snack and he chatted a while, spilled some beans on his big spy franchise.

The report says that Cruise claimed to be “working on the story right now” and has been “thinking about how to stage a big action sequence in downtown Tokyo”. Oh, haven’t we all.

The curious thing with the Mission: Impossible films is that each of them has quite clearly reflected the personality of its director, much more than is typical with franchise pictures. I particularly adore Brian De Palma’s original installment, even though rather a lot of the plot is more tangled up than it needed to be. There’s a good ten minute run - the heist of the NOC list from Langley - that I regularly use in class because, frankly, it’s just about perfect. Alongside the ballet sequence in The Red Shoes this is probably my other favorite consecutive sequence of film making choices in all of cinema and I’ve probably now seen it over 300 times, with one student, friend, tub of ice-cream or another.

I rather like John Woo’s second installment too, for what it is, but can shrug off the JJ Abrams threequel. That’s even though seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman imitating the body language of Tom Cruise was wonderful. The game now, I suppose, is to start guessing who Cruise will tap to direct part four. I have my favourite nominees - McG, Florent Emilio Siri, Martin Campbell, Alfonso Cuaron, Pierre Morel and Ken Loach, to name just a few - but who are yours?

All i can say is you guys really suck! how can you say that one is great, 2 killed the franchise, and 3 was just ok??? they ARE truly ALL some of the best movies out there! like really ANY action movie with a larger than life action hero, that kicks major bad guy ass , does some cool stunts and then kills, is freakin tight!!! like really, number 1 is good but not the best! number two to me is my fave! took these movies to new direction. faaar more action! Ethan Hunt could actually fight in that one. road a sick motor bike, and got a sexy girl. (far hotter then any others in the movies!) i love the bad guy in the second one! great weirdass accent! the second is by far
  • actionhero_5869
my favorite! the third one when it came out i was SOOOOOOOOO hyped! so i saw it first day it came out, during school while i was in the ninth grade with some buds. it was very real!! the opening scene, made it far more grittier, like the world we live in! i like the idea of showing his personal life! - the bad guy (hoffman) is by far the creepiest bad guy this franchise has had! very sick and twisted. that is what it takes for a GREAT bad guy! Ethan can totally kick ass in this one!
  • actionhero_5869
Tom Cruise is a lot bigger in it, so he looks tougher. The fact that he's married doesn't bother me, but i don't think she'll be in the next movie. Agents never bring their wives along for the mission. I.E. - James Bond (yes he was married...once), John McCaine (in the first couple movies), Jason Bourne (the girls he dates and tries to save, get KILLED!!). Anyways I say Tom Cruise: even tho you were a TOTAL ass on Oprah, and around the time you married a girl young enough to be your daughter or neice - I think you are a total badass and love your Mission Impossible movies! get back into this franchise, and bring us MI:IV!!!!! get a real badass actor to be the baddie! make him tougher and even more of a threat to Ethan! ...........................Great movies. ALL of them!
  • callofduty
I like 3 the best. So I wonder if Ethan remains a married man? Im fired up for this!
  • I say go with Todd Solondz.

Really though, 1 was great, 2 I thought single-handedly had killed the franchise, and then 3 comes and pulled it back from the brink. I'm ready for a 4th. Just get it back to a thinking-man's action movie. That's what I remember all the original stories as being, and what I appreciated about the 1st one.
  • dawg_bwillis
the second one is badaaaasss! you guys are all on pot or something. it's a great flick, go watch it again! more like bond action. although all the slow-motion could be cut back on. i love the second one! i fully agree with the other responses, ..............the chick in the second movie?? --------->> soooooooo freakin hooooottt!
  • jedis
How JJ Abrams again? He's brilliant and so is anything Cruise. Give this guy his Oscar already.
  • I don't know how you can say that MI:2 is better than MI:3. That's like saying Matrix Revolution is better than the Matrix... that is how absurd MI:2 is. I hope they really do make an MI:4, and i don't think it matters to much who directs it. I just hope it doesn't pull and Indian Jones and have aliens in it. "MI:4 The Fight Against Lord Xenu"
  • rambo345_kickass
dude - Indiana Jones 4 was freakin tight!....had the stunt/action coordinator of the new james bonds, and of bournes. plus don't you know the Roswell incident really did happen?? they were just showing what would happen if people still got involved.... and matrix is just bizarre. but i love MI:2 i don't get why people hate that one......hottest chick in it, and great action scenes!
  • As crazy as Tom Cruise is I still love his movies and news of a MI:4 is great...liked with what Abrams did but I really want to see Alfonso Cuarón do this...
  • BamaJuice
As long as they have that Asian chick and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in it. I could care less who they bring in to direct it. Oh and don't forget Ving Rhames.
  • ethan hunt
oh i agree....she is sexy. but i think the hottest chick in the MI movies is the hotty from number 2!!! soooooooooo hawwwt!!
  • c-dub
The whole point of the MIssion Impossible was that it was a team of people who all brought their individual talent to help make an impossible mission possible. But the movies have gone in different direction completly. I thnk this series was filling the void left open by the crappy JAmes Bond movies that were being made. NOw that Bond is back WHo needs Ethan Hunt or TOm Cruise?
  • bond...james bond
ok this is shiiiit! James Bond are the greatest action movies ever! along with mission impossibles, bournes, rambos, terminators, indiana joneses, die hards..........don't be dumb about things ya say. there were a few james bond stinkers tho - ill give ya that
  • Snarky Bastard
Instead of hitting the "end" key on your keyboard, you typed a whole sentence to explain what you're an idiot?
  • Weyland_Yutani
I must be the only one that can appreciate an over-the-top, John Woo action sequence. I'm sure, depending on your mindset, it can be a bit ridiculous, but some of that stuff is crazy fun. It's the same appeal that Face-Off has (maybe too much bizarre for Mission Impossible, but I just went with the ride).

Alfonso Cuarón would be an amazing choice. Martin Campbell needs to be on the next Bond. Tony Scott can bring the same appeal that he brought to Spy Game. He'd be a great choice.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little....
  • I agee with the above comments... 1 and 3 were great action films, and 2 was a low point. JJ is the man, and they should keep him in the loop. I really enjoy Cruise as ethan hunt, and this is one character that I would like to see him reprise... The other is his Tropic Thunder show stealer, but whatever. This could be great...
  • Ken Loach? He is a great director but that seems like a really random choice.
  • it was just me being "funny". He was the least appropriate director I could think of (and that included Carlos Reygardas, amongst a few other rejected names)
  • I'd be down for a forth Mission Impossible. Might be good for Tom Cruise, too. Get back to some basics.
  • i love 1 and 3, 2 is abysmal. i do like that he keeps switching up directors though, and as much as i want to see him reunite with abrams, i don't think it has to be for another mission. i vote for...random name...um...ang lee
  • GoreBaby
1 is good fun, 2 is fucking disgusting, 3 is one of the greatest PG-13 action films ever made.

Get JJ and the 'team' from 3 back and im completely down for another one.
  • edward
you are an idiot. they are all good. you all gotta get passed that bullshit of thinking only number one is good. number one is my least favorite
  • Cenzo
who cares. I haven't seen a film of his since he became a jackass.
  • dude
why dude - hollywood stars are jackasses! tom cruise is still a badass action star
  • You didn't watch Tropic Thunder?
  • Michele-Angelo
Not that they're terribly reliable, but IMDb has an entry for M:I 4 with a 2010 release date.
    http://us.imdb.com/title/tt1229238/
  • I quite liked Abrams' take on the series. Of course, I am a fan of anything he does. I think a McG take on it could be interesting but I would rather see him doing the next Terminator movie. Same goes for a possible second Abrams film. I'd rather see him doing another Star Trek movie. (yes, both movies have yet to be released but they look amazing already. Especially Star Trek. Terminator has Christian Bale who hasn't made a bad movie in his life so I am very hopeful)
  • c-dub
Michael Mann but I doubt he will be doing anything with "4" in the title. OR james Mangold 3:10 to yuma was awesome so we know he can shoot action.
  • MI 3 wasn't bad. It was an improvement over MI 2 so I have faith that they can produce a good serious film.
  • What about Tykwer
  • sigh.
  • Richard
Perre Morel would be a great choice, Tony Scott might be good if he didn't do as much of the crazy editing as Domino, I would pick Paul Greengrass just cause he did such a great job with the Bourne franchise which is more realistic, so it would be interesting to see him do something that could be more hollywood style
  • Biznass
I bet Marc Forester. He can ruin another franchise (Quantum of Solace really sucked).
  • james
    you are soooooooo wrong
  • LaFluer
who cares, who directs just have seth rogen and gang be in it, with judd apatow producing.
  • Bobbio
I think MI2 was horrible, and the thing that pulled MI3 above it was Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance. But MI3 was very much indeed a better movie than MI2, by far.

Sorry LaFluer, not really responding to you, just too lazy to scroll down and respond.
