This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

PUNISHER: WAR ZONE
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition)
This is a movie in which a man literally punches through someone’s head. Another scene has a man being exploded mid-air by a rocket launcher. Moments like these are littered throughout Punisher: War Zone, which is a sequel/reboot that clearly has no intention of taking itself seriously. The downside though, is that in order to get these stunningly ludicrous (and yet completely badass) sequences, you’re also forced to trudge through some truly pitiful acting and dialogue. For some, this could very well add to the film’s appeal, giving it a cartoonish B-movie charm that earns it “so bad it’s good” status. And to some extent, I’d even agree with that assessment, but I also feel like there are one too many dull spots to warrant a full recommendation.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc contains no extras, while the 2-Disc includes an audio commentary, making-of featurettes, and a digital copy of the film.

ELEGY
This kind of romance/drama isn’t the type of thing that generally interests me, but I have a rule about movies starring the amazing Ben Kingsley: as long as he doesn’t look like a total retard, it’s probably worth watching. With the exception of a movie or two, the success rate of this rule has been exceptional, as proven by A Sound of Thunder, Bloodrayne, and The Love Guru. And if the reviews for Elegy are to be believed, the rule applies here as well.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A commentary with screenwriter Nicholas Meyer, and a Poety of Elegy featurette.

TWILIGHT
(Releases on Saturday, March 21, 2009)
We already reviewed Twilight on the /Filmcast, and quite frankly, I have no interest in spending much more time discussing it. Simply put, it’s a dumb movie adapted from a dumb book. In a desperate attempt to understand what it is about the book that women find so fascinating, I actually skimmed through a little of it and felt as though I was reading an embarrassing erotic fantasy story written by some 16-year-old girl that had never planned on sharing it with anybody. Suddenly, the reason for the book’s popularity became very clear to me: it’s porn for tween girls. Translate that to film, and what do you get? Awkward, stilted dialogue and lots of scenes of characters staring longingly into each other’s eyes. What fun.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: This 2-Disc Special Edition includes an audio commentary with Catherine Hardwicke, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, 5 extended scenes, 5 deleted scenes, a 7-part documentary (’The Adventure Begins: The Journey from Page to Screen’), and a ‘Comic-Con Phenomenon’ featurette.

BEST PRICE

"Awkward, stilted dialogue and lots of scenes of characters staring longingly into each other’s eyes. What fun."

    So, "Lost in Translation"

    :P
  • TRANSLATION_FAN
    You're so stupid.
  • I hate to say when people "missed the point" of a movie. Unfortunately, you clearly did (although I admit Lost in Translation is not for everyone)
  • fuck Twilight.
  • i actually liked the first Punisher from a few years ago. wasn't the best movie i've ever seen, but it wasn't bad. this one looke horrible.

and i'm ready for this Twilight craze to be over, at least until November. go out, buy the movie, and lock yourselves in your rooms for a few months and leave those of us with real taste alone.
  • i also liked the 2nd punisher or the reboot i think there was one before that one with doulph something something i unno maybe anyway i liked the one from a few years ago. recently watched this one and hated it. i just dont get how that was allowed to be released theatricly. i unno not good at all

twilight is also a movie that i just am either to male for or to old but hey the teen and girlies minus angryboomstick like it so maybe something good is there. jk teens dont know what they like lol
  • agreed on your second point. the fact is that the books and movies are for a specific audience. and i'm not a member of that audience. still, i read the first book in the series (don't judge me), and aside from all the various issues i have with the raping of Vampire lore and various glaring hypocracies throughout, it's just not well written. like at all.
  • Lono
They probably also know to use "too" when describing an excess of something.
  • hahahhahaha i get it
  • Not gonna lie, I quite liked the Punisher movie (as well as the last one). It was just so ridiculous it was entertaining. And am I the only one who is convinced that Ray Stevenson is trying to look like a thin Steven Segal in that movie?
  • haha a thin Steven Seagal. Also, he really kind of looks like the Alec Baldwin puppet in Team America.

All I know is I loved Punisher War Zone. soooo funny.
  • REAL6
Im sorry but Dolph Lundgren's The Punisher is still the best of them all.

Twlight does not even come close to holding a flame close to Let the right one in!!!
  • thatguy
This movie got the action right, to bad everything else was wrong=/
  • yeah it was hard to watch some of the scenes just bad acting. like that crew of runners yikes
  • Watching the one get blown up mid-jump just made the entire movie though. So funny. lol
  • nick
i actually realy enjoyed twilight, it should be on the rent it list at least, even though i only watched it because my girlfriend made me watch it.
  • fangirls beware: Adam Quigley don't give a fuck what you think.
  • i'd agree most movies should be at least rented or watched in the least expensive way just to at least have material to make fun of it with. like edward running through the forest with that creepy chick on his back that was excellent. or his diamond dust face in the sun. i just wanted him to burst into flames there
  • I read you review and felt that the Punisher and Twilight have a unique parrallel about them. Both of these films may be flawed in the sense that they are not great movies like Taxi Driver or Godfather, but your forgeting one thing: THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE!!!! They are both specific demographic films that I feel really hit the mark. Punisher was violent, innovativingly shot, and violent, which is exactly what I (a 30 year old comic book action junkie) wanted. So I was completely satisfied. I personally was ambivalent on Twilight, but my 13 year old niece fucking loved it... so I guess it hit its mark. I found that it was kiddy and sissy-ish, but it wasnt terrible. Its vampires meet 90210... what did u expect. If you are looking for serious films, check out the Wrestler, Slumdog, or The Reader. If you are even considering The Punisher or Twilight, you know why: YOU WANT TO SEE A FILM LIKE THAT!!!! No one has ever walked into a blockbuster thinking serious drama, and ended up witha b movie action flick or a tween movie...
  • josh p
holy crap. read the stuff before the dvd reviews at the top. calm down.
  • Thrillhouse
    Ohhhhh SNAP!

    Fightin' words, Jebus, fightin' words!!!

    (good one though...)
  • starscream9289
I got a blowjob after I took this one chick to watch Twilight, so I have no complaints.
  • But you still did pay money for a shitty movie, for that money you could get a whore to do the real job.
  • did you pay for the movie? and was the movie the complete reason for that bj
  • You must be joking if you're comparing Sophia Coppola's beautifully directed film and Bil Murray's amazing performance to that trash they call twilight.
  • Tascar
I think you are right but the difference is that no one who likes Punisher is going to go around desperately trying to justify the film as being more than just a mindless guy film. In contrast, there are so many people, primarily women (see the /Filmcast review of Twilight) who will admit that Twilight is a mindless girl film but then wants to put the film on a pedestal above mindless guy films, usually by playing some sort of sexism card in debate.
  • weren't you afraid of being bitten?
  • I will be honest about the punisher: war zone. Even though i haven't seen it, and won't give me much room to say about it. But the trailer looked aweful! And a little suprised that you gave it a rent. But like a said, i haven't seen it.
  • Alex
    3 dvds really?
  • Soundwave
Ha glad to see Twlight in the skip it section
  • dagreenman18
Ahh Punisher:Warzone. good times. saw it in theaters on a craptacular double feature accompanied by The Spirt. While Punisher was pure awesome wrapped in cheese, The Spirit was shit covered on comedy gold. Needless to say, go watch Punisher. it will put some hair on your chest.

which will be painfully ripped off if you watch Twilight. ive said it before and i'll say it again: the only forgivable way to watch Twilight is with drinks and friends. nothing like a good MST3k night.
  • Angela
I've got to say, the description of Twilight as tween porn is devastatingly accurate. And also pretty hilarious.
  • starscream9289
    I don't mind being bitten ;)
  • _spinster_
alright punisher war zone, one of the best kick ass movies of 2008, all it needed was thomas jane though, he was the best. no one like twlight it can lick balls
  • Forgot a movie this week. I will let you guess.
  • THE BEST PART OF WAR ZONE:

When the reformed Cholo gangster dude starts to speak. He has the worst Mexican accent on film. I mean it's to the point where Speedy Rodriquez sounded authentic! Oh man that it was funny.
  • Bugs
Tom Jane shoulda played Soap. Looks just like him.
Stevenson was perfect. West as Jigsaw made me giggle all along. Even liked the little girl. The rest were shite. Benz is a FARCE of an actress.
The spinning chandelier was stupid. The killing of the undercover was an unforgiveable mistake towards Punisher fans. Slow part in the middle. But the rest was absolute glory. The hyperviolence is orgasmic. Castle lives.
Counted 73 moidahs by the Man. May have missed a few. Particularly enjoyed the fence empalement. Pittsy gettin shotgunned was also quite enjoyable.
For once, a Jason movie where Jason is the good guy. THAT'S the kinda gore I can put up with. Bad guys gettin their just desserts. As well as the occasional cranial disintegration.
No capes, no masks, no mercy.
    Peace

THE BEST PART OF WAR ZONE:

Never fucking going to see it. Might as well just slapped on the tag "You'll Jack Off To Shitty Everything With This Movie." Pure trash at it's best. Can't wait to see this as WGN's Sunday morning feature in two years.
  • Jason Eisener
Punisher War Zone was my favorite film of 2008, after that "Return to Sleepaway Camp"
then "Never Back Down" and then "The Wrestler"
  • Mary
what exactly does a "total retard" (your words, not mine) look like? give me a break.
why use such demeaning and offensive language against a group of people just doing the best they can. Why is it that despite their asking for you not to use that word you just can't listen? You're not a bully are you? funny, you sure act like one.
  • I know this site is decidedly Anti-Twilight but I'm curious to see what kind of DVD sales it gets. It is opening to midnight release parties all over the country (which... really?? I mean I enjoy the whole Twilight thing but... isn't that a little over the top?) and has been #1 on Amazon's and Walmart's dvd sales (just from pre-orders) for a few weeks now... so I'm curious what kind of money it will bring in
  • This week isn't a very good one for DVDs. Maybe I'll rent Elegy, but the rest are skips.
