Brilliant Where The Wild Things Are Poster

where the wild things are poster top

The Spike Jonze Fan Blog have been mining in the pages of Nick Magazine, and have come up fist-first with a beautiful, beautiful nugget of gold - the first poster for Where the Wild Things Are. You can see the whole poster underneath the fold, but I’d recommend anybody interested in the film go over to the fan blog and have a good rummage there too.

where the wild things are poster

Odd that the Wild Thing’s face has been cropped. It would seem to suggest a marketing campaign that will be keeping the fuzzy ones’ fizzogs hidden away, but we can get a good look at their visages on skateboards, shoe boxes and - any day now - in the trailer. I suppose instead that this compositional strategy is more about creating the allure of a tease where there is no tease. It sill works. Looking at this poster I almost forget what the Wild Thing looks like and he works brilliantly as a projection of Max, which is a good part of the point too.

Ever since Spike Jonze announced his attention to use suits for the Things, and not full CG, I’ve been convinced on his desire to play the monsters at just the right pitch. Then, last year, the infamous test clip did the rounds and it was obvious that Jonze’ plans for the whole film were pitched perfectly. A few screening reports discussing the whole picture and a good read of the screenplay later and I was absolutely sold. This film simply cannot fail. Let me even predict a best picture nomination at next year’s Academy Awards.

I know, I know, it sounds absolutely nuts to claim that a film in this genre would be so lucky to get that kind of hype (I’m saying hype not recognition because I don’t want us to misinterpret all that Oscar hoopla). But I think we’re on for a good handful of high profile and tech nods for this one - Director, Film, Cinematography, Editing. When it comes to Acting, however, I wouldn’t expect a bean. It’s all down to the experience I’m thinking people are likely to take away from the film, defined by a swoony, dreamy melancholy, distinctly cinematic and very, very powerful.

And now I’m done reviewing a film I haven’t even seen I’ll get myself in order and have another good, long look at this beautiful poster.

Looks like it could be a pretty decent adaptation.
  • pretty decent? Gonna be outstanding!
  • Something tells me this might shape up to be a blue print on how to do an adaptation.
  • zig
    Or an interpretation.

I think the book is too thin to be literally "adapted" in the conventional sense of the word. But by all means spike, "adapt" it all you want.

I am anxiously awaiting this release. I think Spike has a chance at doing what Burton has done for us in story telling.
  • MonkeyMafia
I can't remember a thing about the book aside from it's unique character designs but I cannot wait for this film. Eggers is fantastic and Jonz is a genius and those character designs I remember are so eloquent and exist in a quiet fanatsy type of way...

I think the furry fetish community will see a spike in membership after this movie...
  • Ross
    No pun intended.
  • Palmer
Cool poster. You can interpret it in two different ways. He's roaring....or he's screaming in fear.
  • I.... cannot.... WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!
  • it is as amazing as you think it is. I wonder how the music will change since it used a Yeah Yeah Yeahs song and a lot of Arcade Fire's Funeral album
  • Max looks like he's sobbing. Perfect for a movie that's been delayed for years 'cause it was too scary for the kiddies. Nice job, guys.
  • he's roaring like the wild things...not sobbing
  • well im even more excited now!!! i cant wait!!!!:p
  • this is a great poster. I love the placement, size, and font of "There's one in all of us"

    it looks awesome.
  • Yes! Let the wild rumpus start!
  • Biznass
    Best Picture? Are you serious?
  • Ross
I've read the script. If the movie is half as good, I wouldn't doubt it.
  • Stephen Grim
Does the font look like the same font used for the Freaks and Geeks logo? Or am I just slowly going insane?
  • That's exactly what i was thinking! it's the exact same font. so, so far we've got a Spike Jonze adaptation of one of the best kid's books ever written (with a screenplay by Dave Eggars), scored by Karen O of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with a poster font of "Freaks and Geeks". talk about playing into a niche audience and the general public at once.
  • Mr. Michaelson
I mean, it's nice. But briliant? This site throws compliments around like that pretty liberally, you might want to watch that. We don't need another AICN.
  • If I say brilliant, I mean brilliant. You won't see me applying that term to, say, Transformers movies.
  • starscream9289
I've been fooled by posters before.

But I would put that on my wall.
  • Holy hell. Officially INSANELY amped for this adaptation.
  • The poster looks simple and eloquent. I cannot wait to see this film.
  • theuglyspirit
This is going to be glorious.
  • Fantastic poster! Can't wait for the 3 minute trailer also.
  • Nick
    You're welcome.
  • I like the "Freaks and Geeks" style font.
  • Gordon
That's not a font. You can tell, because none of the letters are the same.
  • The wait keeps growing on me....I just cannot wait to see this.
  • excellent
  • thankyoufor
Burton...and storytelling..HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAhAAHHHAAHAHAH dont make me laugh
Spike Jonze is way better than burton could ever be
burton is purely style over substance
  • zig83
Although I think there's validity to your point, he pleasantly surprised me with "Big Fish". Despite being the least-Burton from his films, it is still my favorite.

Beneath that gothic high-art department exterior, there's a storyteller in there... somewhere.
  • thehick
big fish is by far my favorite burton film, couldn't be overly botherd by the rest
  • So cute
  • i can't wait for it.
  • Goobity
So ...this poster is implying that there's a screaming brat in a rabbit suit in all us fuzzy monsters? I object! :)

Seriously, tho. I am interested in seeing this one hit the screens.
  • I am so very excited about this movie...
  • schnipple
You're predicting the brilliance of this film from a few snapshots and a movie poster? Wow. The days of marketing hype has finally won. And our movie culture has really lost in so many ways...
  • huh?
If you read the article properly, you'd have read that he also read the script for them movie.
  • gastrotect
I'm not really sure what marketing hype you are referring to. You said it yourself: there have only been a few photos and a poster released. Not much marketing hype at all. I think the quality of the base material, the quality of the director, the quality of the cast and the alleged quality of the script gave WTWTA fans hope. Now the visuals are confirming that hope, even if only a little.
I have only heard of this movie through blogs/word of mouth. There is little marketing being done for this yet as far as I can tell. I don't even think it has a website (could be wrong about that).
  • Goobity
I think it's more than that. Spike Jonze is a reputable director (if only in short subjects for the most part), the cast is stellar:
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386117/
and the buzz for the past year is that the script is great.
And this is not a result of any 'marketing hype'. As far as I can tell it's all been word of mouth...
  • I like this poster, but I want to see the one that Spike talked about on that AICN interview. Basically, it's just Caroll (the Wild Thing from this poster) hiding behind a tiny thin tree.
  • Best Picture? Really?
  • marz
i cant wait for the trailer either.been waiting for this movie ever since i was a kid...and who carse WHAT the kid is doing in the poster.does it matter.as far as we know he might be yawning after a nites sleep. imposible to know without sound..but anyway, the monster design is aweeeesome and the pic of them walking in the desert and the monster looking down at him is freakin sweet.
  • WILD_FAN
    brilliant has two L's idiot.
  • Stephen Grim
Yeah I totally agree. I think this will be the rare film that brings both the indie audience (due to Karen O, Spike Jonze, and Dave Eggars) and the general public , most of whom read the book when they were kids. Personally I do not see how this could fail critically or commercially, because of everything you said and the fact that it just looks really great.
  • Incredible. I'm even more in love with this movie.
  • I think if the vision of Spike Jonze and Co. is released as they want it to be, the best picture nod may not be that far fetched.
  • Cant wait for this
