where the wild things are

A full 3-minute trailer for Spike Jonze’s big screen adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are will screen in front of DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens, which hits theaters on March 27th 2009. Scored to the song Wake Up by Arcade Fire, a scooper over on CHUD describes the trailer as “beyond the most grandiose superlatives: ‘beautiful’ and ‘gorgeous’ and ‘breathtaking’”, calling the environments “a work of incredible vision” and the finalized monsters “some kind of incredible technical achievement”, “nothing short of real and feel very alive and very, very huggable.” I’ve been waiting for this movie since I was a little kid, and I can’t explain how excited I am just reading a vague description of a trailer.

  • I don't want to see Monsters vs Aliens. I'm sure Slash will have a bootleg trailer somewhere in the future ;-)
  • Sounds Awesome! Read the bookas a kid and cant wait to see this film!
  • Danny
FUCK YEA!! But omg plus its gona be in digital projection XD
  • Can't wait to see the trailer! I completely trust that Spike Jonze has created something completely original and definitely worth watching.

That photo alone is worth a thousand words. I'm so excited...this will be a huge hit!
  • This is why WB is the top studio right now.

    The Dark Knight.

Watchmen, despite what you think of it, was a bold move like what Kevin Smith said.

Ninja Assassin. Mind you a NINJA MOVIE with an Asian actor/singer that mostly unknown in the US.

Now, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. A kids indie like movie directed by Spike Jonze with a score by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

    awesome.
  • btw... Peter you reported Ninja Assassin trailer was supposed to come last Friday? what happened? lol
  • Reported that it was rumored... didn't happen.
  • it made sense Warner Bros. + R rated film + Watchmen...WB and Joel Silver missed out on an opportunity...everyone can't be right 100% of the time even more so when it's a rumor
  • Seeing MvA and wearing s rubber for this.
  • Seeing MvA and wearing a rubber for this.
  • Awesome, now I have an excuse to see Monsters vs. Aliens.
  • OMG YES!!!
  • I, and I think a lot of people here as well...grew up on this book. I can't express how excited I am. Especially with Spike in the chair..Adaptation is one of my fav's.
  • let's hope Avatar's trailer is attached as well...I'm very excited to see the WTWTA trailer...It's been a while since Henson has done of film of this size...I hope it's equally as entertaining as Labyrinth or Dark Crystal....I'm dying to see if Henson also does creature effects for Masters of The Universe as well...
  • Sounds promising, I wouldn't go to Monsters vs. Aliens just to see the trailer though.
  • I am buying a ticket based on this article photo.
  • I am buying a ticket based on this post's photo.
  • Spike Jonze + One of the Best Children's Books Ever Written + Score by Karen O + WB = magic. i can't wait for this trailer.

and the Arcade Fire song should fit perfectly, i'm glad to see two of my favorite indie bands get some publicity.
  • I saw this at an advanced screening in Pasadena in November of 2007. It was an amazing film back then, I have been dying to see it in the theaters again. It was mostly scored with Arcade Fire music from their Funeral album and the use of an acoustic version of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's Maps.
  • Completely agree.
  • why the hell was my comment deleted?????? WTF????

Anyway the photo still looks AMAZING, and I can't wait, but I have no interest in watching Monsters vs Aliens, so I'll wait for the trailer to re-surface somewhere on the Internet.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens looks awesome
Even though I have seen 20+ minutes of it and all other things... I still would want to watch it on big screen in 3D. (Especially the Golden Gate bridge sequence)
To me it looks like a bit like "The Incredibles" (although I guess that's not a fair comparison since nothing can beat that)
  • Mine was deleted too. It was nothing but praise for this film. Oh well.
  • jobless
the monsters look fantastic. i'm so very completely enthralled with how well they adapted the monsters from the book. i'm excited
  • dagreenman18
Hell fucking yes. i can't wait for this movie. And kudos to whoever decided to use Wake Up in the trailer. you sir/madam are a genius.
  • I will end up seeing the leaked version on youtube anyways
  • That photo looks so good...I def can't wait for the trailer...
  • Palmer
Well, finally. No all we need is The Road trailer and release date....attached to a non-kid oriented film of course.
  • Ahhhhh, how fucking awesome.
Love Arcade Fire, and I've been waiting for this movie since I heard Karen O was working on the soundtrack.
  • Josh
YES!!! FREAKIN' YES!!! Honestly, I am looking forward to this film so much, that I, as you Peter, am almost fainting at the mere description of the trailer. I LOVE the book, I LOVE the voice cast, I LOVE Spike Jonze, I LOVE when beautiful worlds are created, and I LOVE seeing a child actor be amazing. I am so FREAKIN' excited for this film.

My only worry. My biggest letdown of 2008 (Benjamin Button) also had an Arcade Fire song in its trailer. Please, please, please, please GOD have mercy on me and don't let this film dissapoint.

I was on the fence about seeing MvA, but this sealed the freakin' deal!

Peter is this the version Spike Jonze wanted or the watered down version the studio wants? I lost track but seem to recall Jonze was fighting for his take (darker).
  • From what I've heard, this is Spike's version. There's a lengthy interview with him on AICN that set my mind at ease. I saw the early cut of this movie and it sounds like the final version is very close to what we saw (though I am kinda disappointed that one part they mention cutting).
  • Definitely had Where The Wild Things Are on the 'Looking Forward To' list a long time ago, been eagerly anticipating a trailer ever since. Mind you, I won't be going to see Monsters Vs Aliens just to witness it. I do have an internet connection, after all.
  • Oooo, I hope it's true! Sounds great, especially the Arcade Fire bit!

So Peter...does this mean WB didn't force Jonze to change portions?

OR is this the sweetened version?

    I'm confused.
  • Salamander
Anyone out there know if the trailer will be shown at UK screenings too, or does this just apply to the US?
  • arnold
    jonze changed nothing.
he had the test screening to do pick ups, scenes jonze wanted to add in.
the scenes were simple dialog scenes that added some umph to max's understanding of the wild things.

i repeat, nothing has changed. goetzman was very adamant when speaking about jonze's creative authority.
  • The movie I'm anticipating the most and we get a 3 minute trailer. I'm incredibly giddy right now.
  • i will kick myself if I miss the trailers now. 3 full minutes....holy shit. this picture flashing onto the screen alone by itself woulda gotten me psyched up for this film.
  • Sues
I think what's making me most excited is knowing that this is the one trailer of the whole year that WB chose to exceed the 2:30 limit. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trailer_(film)#Defin...

That, and the mind-blowing photos and ever-increasing faith that this will actually be as perfect as we're being lead to believe. I'm pretty confident that I'll shit myself the moment the first frame of monsters comes on screen.
  • I think you'll shit yourself long before that my friend. Your heart is going to ache for max from the first frame...
  • Anony Mouse
    its only 2:05
  • Anony Mouse
it's only 2:05 am where I live and there are so many comments already. I can't wait. Anyone know when it's going to be released in the UK?
  • i am beyond excited! SPIKE JONZE!!!!
  • Bobby
what do you mean Henson? Jim Henson is dead and the Jim Henson Company nor Jim Henson Creature Shop has nothing to do with the production of this movie.
  • Brian Henson runs the Creature Shop...Kayne West posted images on his blog when Henson worked on his tour...they did the puppet suits for the movie

    Very pleasant news to hear.

I'd imagine that it's going to feel rather surreal and subliminal to see the monsters in motion combined with the scenery and what not, if the trailer is crafted in a correct manner.

"Where the Wild Things Are" is definitely one of the top films on my radar, at the moment.
