Natalie Portman Cast in Marvel’s Thor?

portman thor

Nikkie Finke has been on a roll regarding news from the world of Marvel, which makes me think she has a good inside source. Today she posted a bunch of casting tidbits for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. First up is Thor himself. Finke gives a list of actors who have tested for the role, including Josh Hartnett, Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy), Tom Hiddleston (The Gathering Storm), Liam Hemsworth (The Expendables), Joel Kinnaman and the previously rumored Alexandar Skarsgard.

But the big shocker is that Natalie Portman will be playing the lead female role. Possibilities after the jump.

Fans are already trying to figure out which character Portman would play, but it probably comes down to these three options:

portmanthoroptions

  1. Amora the Enchantress, Thor’s Asgard love-interest and antagonist.
  2. Sif, Thor’s wife who is also a Goddess in Asgard.
  3. Jane Foster, Donald Blake’s nurse who eventually develops feelings for him, without knowing that Blake is Thor

I can picture Portman as Option #3 but that wouldn’t be the most logical choice considering that most of the film takes place in Asgard and not in the modern day real-world (or at least from what we’ve heard). I doubt that Portman would sign on for a small role, but maybe she did’t sign on just for Thor and her part would pay off in The Avengers? I just don’t see Portman as a Goddess or Enchantress, despite the fact that she did play a Princess in the Star Wars prequels.

While I consider myself somewhat versed in the Marvel universe, I have only really encountered Thor in The Ultimates. So my insight into the possibilities are based only on what I can gather from comic book websites and wikipedia. Maybe someone more knowledgeable in Thor history will be able to offer their expertise in the comments below.

  • OK! This is good news. It's good to know they're starting to take this thing seriously, and Portman almost exclusivly does good movies.
  • Broom
are u saying if she didn't do star wars she would have done nothing but good films?
  • Enthropii
    So true...
  • OK! This is good news. It's good to know they're starting to take this thing seriously, and Portman does almost exclusivly good movies.
  • Dr. Lizardo
I would have to go with option 3 as well, I can't see Portman being a goddess type. But if you haven't read any of J. Michael Straczynski's new Thor run, you should definitely pick up a copy! IMHO, he's the best writer working in comics today.
  • Evergreen
At first I read "Natalie Portman cast as Marvel's Thor" and had a major WTF moment.
  • Geist
As soon as I read Portman being in this, I thought of Lady Sif. I thought of Knightley in King Arthur. But I can definitely see her as playing Jane realistically.
  • Dear Marvel, please don't go overboard. I know Ironman did well... but Thor? You've already got Sam Jack to do 9 movies based on your stories, has someone just gone apes*** at your offices and decided to do everything possible? I have a feeling before the end, Clu Gulager is going to be making appearances in your movies.
  • Hopefully, she will be the Pepper Potts(Gwyneth Paltrow) of the Thor universe( or better put Option #3 ). In that she will be a everyday normal person in the love with the Man, not the Superhero. I think she has a much better chance of pulling this type of character off than anything in the superWOman department.
  • I really hope not...Paltrow was one of the few awful aspects of Iron Man
  • um, no she wasn't. in fact she made the movie for some of the audience...chemistry with rdj was phenomenal
  • Alex
you must have flunked chemistry in HS! -wink-
  • Django
I think you may've flunked Chemistry with every girl you've ever met, dude.

Theirs was palpable, and sealed the deal that Iron Man was a solid date movie and must have for the home collection for many, many couples.

You should study up - she added more to the marginal character of Pepper Potts w/ her turning up of the flames than any female actress in any comic, sci fi or fantasy movie to date.

I challenge you to prove me wrong (to any girl on planet Earth).

Study up - you just may learn something about "heightening the tension" from RDJ.
  • Alex
Challenge accepted, and you lose. Firstly, I am a girl (and on planet Earth) and second I know plenty of other guys and girls who though she was just plain dull.
  • as many as 'plenty' may be, it certainly isn't the majority, her involvement in and contribution to the movie was widely praised...frankly i'm shocked there can have been a genuinely negative response! what more could you have possibly asked from ANY actress in that role?
  • I'd honestly rather see Natalie Portman as Thor.
  • gah
Wow, Skarsgard doesn't have much competition does he? He's got that one in the bag. The other guys don't even come close.
  • agreed - the others made me think that some computer involvement would be needed for arms of thor...
  • I'll say one thing. Go watch Green Street Hooligans and the first Season of Sons of Anarchy. Charlie Hunnam, if he bulked up a bit more could pull off Thor. He looks the part, is British, etc. I wouldn't be disappointed if he was cast...
  • i'd love to see that switch. Portman is a much better fit with Iron Man imo.
  • I would like to say two things:

    1. Shame on anyone who "doesn't see Natalie Portman as a goddess".
    2. She was not a princess in Star Wars; first a Queen and then a Senator.
  • I've enjoyed many of film starring Portman...but don't bring up the prequels as part of her merit to be in Thor...I'd focus more on The Professional and V For Vendetta
  • she wasn't very good in star wars so why would she be any better in Thor? i think it's a mistake but ive been wrong before.
  • Because she's a good actress? Taking a leap of faith there.
  • AWhitman
charlie hunnam charlie hunnam charlie hunnam
  • that movie would be all sorts of awesome. The Avengers is gonna be a major sausage fest.

As an aside Natalie Raps was on my iTunes as i logged into slashfilm.
  • I didn't say anything about the Prequels other than "she was not a Princess [in them]".
  • my bad...I read too much into comment sometimes...she is a class actress which is nice to see...I really like Marvel Studios' casting department
  • I was never a fan of Hertnett until I saw 30 Days of Night. He was always just a pretty boy skating through Hollywood on his looks. He proved me wrong in 30 Days of Night, though. He showed that he has some good acting skills. I'd welcome him in the Thor movie, not as Thor though. Maybe as a villain.
  • But I do love the Prequels and everything about Natalie Portman. So there.
  • Infrafan
    Natalie Portman. Yes. *swoons*
  • charlie hunnam is awesome on sons of anarchy
    Him or that skarsgard guy.
  • I hope she gets the part for Lady Sif.
  • Geoff Johns
  • i like johns as much as the next nerd, but seriously, straczynski's thor is outstanding
  • Yeah, those are some scrawny motherfuckers to play Thor. The only one whose acting chops I've really seen is Charlie Hunnam. He's really a standout on Sons of Anarchy.
  • A Girl Fan
Well... she did play a seductress in The Other Boleyn Girl. Overlooking the historical inaccuracy, I think she did a good job as Anne Boleyn despite how craptastic that movie was.
  • SPARTACVS
Charlie Hunnam would be great in the role, but if he takes this then that means he can't do ANOTHER superhero movie and take over as the Joker which I think he would do the best job with. In this case, I think Skarsgard is my #1 choice.
  • I think they should just leave the joker untouched for now. but Skarsgard my #1 choice also.
  • Optimus Prime
Good point...cause I think he would be as good a replacement you could get for heath...however, let's leave the joker untouched and get Charlie in a superhero movie..
  • Palmer
I hope the movie would at least include Donald Blake in some way. Even as a teaser set-up for the Avengers film.
  • oug
    omfg!
nat as lady sif because nat is a goddess so its perfect.
  • Yeah, I heard that Josh was being looked to for Loki as well. As for Portman I'd like to see her as Lady Sif. I Ioved her in V4V and I think she really pulled off her character and came out strong in The Other Boleyn Girl. She's definitely a better actress than Scarlett anyways, who I thought she totally overshadowed in said movie. Besides I think it would be totally cool to see her as a shield maiden, kickin' some ass :)
  • Natalie Portman is a fine choice, I could see her as a goddess any day. ;)
  • Portman would be a great addition...I did read a cool opinion that Portman and Scarlett should switch roles... considering Scarlett has the Nordic look and Portman could pull off an accent and looks the part....
  • gah
Isn't Johannson actually a redhead naturally though? Im pretty sure her blonde hair is dyed. Anyway, you make a good point but IM2 has enough talent that it whatever acting problems Johannson has should be overshadowed by the kickassness of Downey and Rourke. Whereas Thor is probably going to be a no name so Portman will be more of a draw than Johnanson would be.
  • well she's Danish...that's what I meant by Nordic...and she does look better as a blond than a redhead or brunette...

I agree with having Portman as the big name in Thor...I'm just hoping they keep a majority of this film in Asgard..Portman included...I could see her playing Sif
  • Mjolnir
I love that the top picks for Odin& Thor's last name rhymes with "Asgard"'. It's like they were born for this role!
  • petite
actually portman can play Amora.natalie portman is very strong actress.she will be angel and evil same time.
  • bobbyboy
I know it may sound strange but, why not Portman as Loki? Loki's real nature it's never been clear:in some comics it's pictured like a Lady, so... (please don't insult me I do love Natalie but I just can't see her like Sif)
