Movie Trailer: Park Chan-Wook’s Thirst

thirst

I didn’t have a chance to catch Park Chan-Wook’s last film, I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK, but I loved his “vengeance trilogy,” which consisted of Sympathy for Mr./Lady Vengeance and the inimitable (despite what some people will tell you) Oldboy. Now, a trailer for his latest film, Thirst, which he wrote and directed, has surfaced (via CHUD). Hit the jump for a brief plot description and for the trailer video.

Thirst tells the story of a priest (Song Kang-Ho) who is accidentally transformed into a vampire when a medical experiment goes horribly awry. As he experiences drastic psychological and physiological changes, he must struggle to hold onto his humanity.

This trailer seems to have all the hallmarks of quality Park Chan-Wook films: Horrifying gore, unappetizing sex, and stylish cinematography. Unfortunately, the entire trailer is in Korean with no English subtitles, so non-Korean speakers will have to power through without a translation. Thirst will be released in South Korea in April, and Focus Features will be distributing the film in the U.S. later this year.

The octopus scene in Oldboy is "inimitable". I'd like to see to see Will Smith pull that off without Spielberg's CGI.
  • Where in the world is "I'm a Cyborg" on DVD? I can't find it.

And I HATE IT when they shortened up the titles for "I'm a CYBORG but That's Okay" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengence" for America. I just don't see the need for that.
  • If i recall "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" wasn't even the Korean title of the film. Wasn't it "Kind-Hearted Ms. Geum-Ja"?
  • jazzpiano3
Actually, the title of this movie 'Thirst' is in fact 'A Bat' in Korean. :)
  • sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • do you know if that Korean actor REALLY ate the octopus for real, though?
  • Isaac

Yep he really ate the octopus.
  • hahahahaha thats amazing
  • That is some dedication right there.
  • He's a badass.
  • BatWave
Did you know he also *really* tattooed himself?

He says so in the commentary ^,..,^
He says that they're still in his arm hehe

I kept missing I'm A Cyborg. I caught it at last year's San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. I saw OldBoy at BNAT5 and Sympathy For Lady Vengeance at BNAT7, so I was primed for Chan-Wook's Cyborg to show up at BNAT8, and was kind of surprised when it didn't. It took me a while to get to finally see it, but it was worth the wait. And seeing it on the big screen at the Castro really made it worthwhile. You really do need to find a copy and see it, as it is one of the most beautifully touching movies I have ever seen. It was easily the favorite movie I saw last year in the theater (and I saw a LOT last year).

Yes, he did. Check out the special features on the disk for a look at that scene. That was so sick.
  • I can't find it on Netflix, either :-/
  • exactly. I'm not too sure what "Cyborg" didn't get the "Old Boy" treatment despite Chan-Wook's popularity.

The strange thing is that even if it's not out on DVD, Netflix usually has some info on these movies. For instance, JCVD has it's own page. Christ, even Transformers 2 has a Netflix page!
  • carlmcdonald
Ive seen it to buy in loads of shops!? Its on play.com right now.
  • Neiklot
it's basically a prayer expressing forgiveness being said throughout the trailer...couldnt quite make out alot more then that...looks pretty crazy imho

This is the trailer with english subs:

  • So, so so down for this. He's got the Christopher Nolan/Pixar Director ordeal going on..I'd watch anything from him.
  • "...inimitable (despite what some people will tell you) Oldboy." Could not agree more.

This is a good trailer, but I think Chan-Wook's name will do more to draw a crowd. Personally I've been awaiting this since it showed up on his imdb page, and I doubt I'm the only one.
  • cant wait

Apparently he ended up eating 4 octopuses in order to complete that scene. The next time some stuck up actor talks about their dedication to the "craft", just point to this scene.
  • They play "I'm a Cyborg, but Thats Ok" on IFC some times and its OnDemand . It was a really good movie with great acting and a great story. I recommend trying to find it and watch it.
  • MSanchez
    Looks good, I'm in.

    Park Chan-Wook is a genius.
  • I love octopus, never had it raw like he did tho...don't think I want to either...
  • Fantastic teaser. Bring on the real trailer.
  • that movie was freaking awesome hahaha so cool that he ate that octopus
  • im amazed he did that without gagging i would have defiantly up chucked lol
  • joe
if it turns out that that chick he's bangin is his daughter, i'm going to be let down.

nevertheless, i like the guy and his movies
  • That Guy
Song Kang-Ho is awesome, and so is Park Chan-wook.
  • just watched Im a Cyborg But Thats Okay. This movie is amazing, its like an incredibly sweet little movie anchored by two lighthearted central performances but set in a mental institution (and indeed the leads are deranged in this) and very violent. It's classic Wook and really is a great movie (my personal favourite scenes being the 'cyborg' destroying every white un in the institute with her finger guns and the incredibly heartwarming 'back door' scene; youll know it when you see it.

After seeing that and now the trailer for this I am just so stoked.
  • Ross Peacock
oh and if youre in the UK you can get I'm A Cyborg from Amazon for £12 (the dvd is about £26) But I think this will change soon so get it asap! This film is amazing!
  • Ross Peacock
by that I mean you can get the blu ray for £12, and this movie is freaking amazing on blu ray!
  • Thank you for that tip! Oldboy is also cheap, I just bought both.
  • I would have to agree, neither of them can do no wrong in my book.
  • Mario
Old Boy is one of my favorite movies of all time. I am very excited about this movie =)
  • Touche.
  • Big fan of Chan-Wook; I think his brand of intense violence is one of the most refreshing. He's an actual filmmaker and that's what draws me to his movies. That being said; I'll approach this movie with caution. Sometimes my perception can be influenced so much by a trailer that the film itself feels less rewarding. And the fact that it is a vampire movie could be a pro or a con. Probably a pro. It looks great.
  • i'm not sure it's great timing for a vampire movie. Twilight is taking over screens everywhere, and the most recent installment of Underworld was quite lacking.

but hopefully Chan-Wook can show these bitches what's up.
  • TWILIGHT_FAN
OMG, the vampires look all wrong! Haven't they watched Twilight? That was, like, the best vampire movie ever!!! This one doesn't look as good. What's with all the yucky blood and the ugly people? Edward Cullen was so dreamy!!! There's no one dreamy in this, so I'm probably not gonna see it. XOXO
  • Park Chan-Wook is freaking awesome. I kinda wish he wasn't doing a vampire film but who cares I'll still see it.
  • Creepy, i love it....
  • Weee, and the guy from "the host" stars, I dunno his name, but he was awesome in the host.
And afaik eating live octopuss is not that uncommon in korea. Correct me if I'm wrong
  • jazzpiano3
Some Koreans enjoys eating live octopus, but some Koreans never ever even think about that. I think maybe about 1/10 of Koreans actually enjoy eating them.
  • keeeeef
    i cant wait for this!
  • Apparently the captions in English read

    ‘You shall not murder.’
    ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.’
    ‘Bloodlust disturbs his soul.’
and the last line is "Vampires aren’t immortal. Do you still want my blood?
  • jason B
this & anything else related to wook should be on the front page page of every newspaper/blog/tv show in the country.
  • Mina
Although a lot of Korean don't enjoy eating octopus, but it's not too strange eating live octopus. Many Koreans can eat chopped live octopus.
