Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno

Universal Pictures premiered 22 minutes of footage from Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat follow-up Bruno at SXSW, and judging from the early buzz — Cohen has another monster hit on his hands. It seems like Bruno is going to be even more controversial and even more offensive. While not many media outlets in Austin has reported in, I thought I’d take a look at some of the reaction from twitter. Tomorrow we’ll have a full round-up from the blogs/web:

Fantasticomark_main_normalrodneydp: Bruno scenes suggest a film that is more aggressive, more offensive and better executed than Borat. Very, very good.
Emblem-danger48_normalevilry: The sneak peak of Bruno was outrageous, insane, offensive and incredibly hysterical. It trumps Borat, if you can believe that.
Minime75x65_normalindigoprime: Bloody hell, the Bruno movie makes Borat look like kids TV. See it. Out in June. Bloody fantastically awful!
Eric-snider_normal
EricDSnider: The ‘Bruno‘ footage we saw Sunday night was legendary. I’m not sure I’ve ever laughed so hard at anything. And I don’t even like humor!
Jtile_normaljamesrocchi: 3 scenes from Bruno? Funny. Wildly, paralytically funny and brilliantly trasgressive; the proverbial button gets pushed to individual atoms.

More after the jump.

Me_2_normalshawnlevy: Laughed so much at “bruno” that i feel like i had a cardio workout
Pi_logolink_normalphotoinduced: New Sacha Baron Cohen ” Bruno” movie Is hysterical and disturbing, all at once
Manhattan_icon_normalgriswold: just as shockingly funny as his Afghanistanian cousin (Borat). Can’t wait for the backlash on this one.
Twitter-logo_normalEvokativeFilms: laughed so hard my face hurt. This one will be a screemer I tells ya.
Twitter-flag_normalvanityfairmag: Judging from 20 min preview, Sasha Baron Cohen has done it again with Bruno.
Felberstration_normalFelbsie: The Sacha Baron Cohen movie sneak peek was awesome, but 22 mins not enough I need more more more!
Sb-logo-bar-magenta_normalstudybreaks: Just saw 20 min of Bruno…will be the funniest movie of the year.
Herzog_normalThePlaylist: Bruno footage. holy fucking shit. hahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahaha
Eug1008_normaleug: Bruno” footage did what it needed to, folks are twittering and facebooking. Bloggers and journos buzzing. Looks very funny…
Allison_headshot_normalallisonb00: Just saw some raw footage of Sascha Baron Cohen’s new flick Bruno — pretty shocking
Elastigirl2_normalsunchic: Ribs hurting from the Bruno sneak peak. Classic!
Davemathewsjpg_normalggdm: It makes Borat look like a walk in the park!

So I guess what people are saying is that the Bruno movie is more "Auhkay" than "Nicht-nicht".
  • Wow this is some great news! Everyone doesn't seem to just like this film but find it completely hysterical and possibly one the funniest movies of 2009. I can't wait for this film now, I loved Borat and it looks like Bruno will be just as entertaining if not more!

Homophobes? You must not have seen a lot of the Bruno sketches on the Ali G show. In fact, he lampooned a lot of gay people during his designer/runway segments.
  • Shit, accidentally deleted my comment. You're right though, but he also tapped into people's homophobia at times and, if this film is anything like Borat - with a strong focus on the US - I expect a similar type of approach. Yet my favorite moments had to be when he met with the club owner and he was establishing what "tone level" the club was at. The truth is he mocks everything by being a kind of exaggerated stereotype; I was just giving an example (while taking a stab at homophobia). And I've seen every episode of the Ali G show, absolutely bloody brilliant.

The Ali G show was brilliant, and I hope HBO starts re-airing episodes. I'm kind of shocked that in light of the Borat success they haven't already done so.

"Accidentally deleted my comment." ...LOL! Ok, whatever...
  • Color me interested, loved Borat, even after the build up of hype.. so hopefully this one is even better. Which it seems.
  • Lets start counting the lawsuits....

  • Very excited to see this movie :D
  • Sacha Baron Cohen is a clever bastard. He gets to do the same kind of comedy approach under different character traits and milk us for every ticket. And you know what? It's totally worth it. I'm in.
  • Can't wait. If they're claiming it's better than Borat this could be a transcendental movie going experience. Cohen is a comedic genius.
  • I hope the reactions are real, and not coming from people that were involved in production. Besides, selecting best clips from the movie to show as intro is not an indicator for the entire film. o.0

  • i like how he mocks rednecks and American ignorance. This will be awesome. Go Borat!
  • They did a little when Borat came to theaters, not nearly enough though.
  • Been hearing some funny buzz from a few minutes of viewing that was reviewed. Loved Borat, looking forward to this as well.
  • I think this will be better than Borat but not as commercially successful.
  • I loved 'Borat' and thought it was hilarious (then again, the Borat character has always tickled my funny bone), but I never was a huge fan of Bruno on the 'Ali G' show and various other little sketches he did here and there, still it's a Baron Cohen film, and the man knows how to rub people the wrong way (right way in respects to it being freakin' hilarious). I'll be watching with open eyes and ears, especially since this buzz has arisen.

  • More offensive than Borat?...my kind of movie...

  • Borat, Ali G, Jean Girard from Talladega...all of his stuff is gold. He is very intelligent, and knows how to cater perfectly to his audience, so I won't be surprised if this trumps Borat.

I am in Iraq and it is, of course, already bootlegged here. It is obnoxious, disturbing and just outrageous. It is extremely funny and makes you wonder what is going on in Sacha Baron Cohen's head.
