Early Twitter Buzz: Observe and Report

observe and report

The new Seth Rogen R-rated mallcop comedy Observe and Report premiered at SXSW earlier tonight. The reviews will be pouring in from Austin, after the party’s come to an end later tonight (and we’ll give a roundup tomorrow), but for now lets check in with the 140-character buzz on Twitter. Seems like a lot of people thought it was hilarious, insanely quotable and somewhat shocking/awkward, but a couple people didn’t think it was that funny, and even one supposed Seth Rogen fan s tweeted about walking out. Lets go to the tweets:

Dshanya_artistic_web_normallola0813: OBSERVE & REPORT report: Fucking awesome. Incredibly funny & smart.

Dentler_normalMattDentler: Observe And Report may be the craziest studio movie of the year

N1548060227_30137477_4538_normalthekeller: OBSERVE AND REPORT…. the hardest i have laughed since superbad. one of the funniest movies ever

Img00676_normaljennyjacob: Observe and Report” - not so funny. Left early and I’m a Seth Rogen fan.

Jtile_normaljamesrocchi: Observe and Report: Travis Bickle, Mall Cop. Funny, scary, don’t quite know if you should root for Rogen.\

Twitter-avatar_normalrejects: Alright fine. Observe and Report was dark. Not too dark, but dark. It was also very smart and very, very funny.

More after the jump.

Petkus_at_eodm_normaljohnnymeatworth: Observe And Report is a work of fucking genius. Seth Rogen is a Travis Bickle for our times. Pass it on.
Emblem-danger48_normalevilry: Observe & Report is funny, awkward & shocking at times; but also a bit hyperbolic. Good not great, but the ending is one to end all.
Twitter_avatar_normalveektohr: Observe and Report is one profane, violent, and hilarious movie!
411615233_l_normalEricVespe: Observe & Report was fuckin’ hilarious
Soto_feed_normalSideOneTrackOne: Quick Review - Observe And Report -Twisted, dark, hilarious, sad, briliant. 2009’s first GREAT flick. 10/10
Scottgoestosundance_normalmoviegeeks: Observe and Report was effing brilliant!
Small_me_normaljessfudd: Observe and Report was way violent.
Jer-abc_300_normalblink: Observe and Report was pretty darn awesome. Will see it again. Most memorable use of The Pixies’ “Where is My Mind” since Fight Club.
Me-matsuri_normalmeghanstern: sad to say i didn’t like Observe & Report. the best i can say is that it was mildly amusing, but it’s trying so hard it’s kind of sad.
Photo_18_normalbettysoo: Omg “Observe & Report” was out of control. It’s gonna be quoted for a long, long time. Unbelievable.
Spynight2_normalLoveSerge: Observe and report. Funny but kinda disturbing also.
John_face_2_normalelkmating: Just picked up my dad from the Paramount screening of “Observe and Report”. He said it was OK but there was a LOT of cursing in it.

is mall cop comedies the new big thing?
  • Tap Zepol
Nah, I don't think we'll be seeing anything beyond Paul Blart 2. After that we'll be asking the same thing about werewolf buddy movies.
  • I'm going to wait til a writer on this here site gives us a better evaluation.
  • freemachine
I'm sticking to my opinion based on the trailer---which was friggin' hilarious.
  • Palmer
Well, at least it's going to be better than Paul Blart. And...actually funny.
  • I would recommend (if you haven't seen it) The Foot Fist way to get an idea of what you will get in Observe and Report. That movie is really weird because it could be seen by one person as a comedy and by another as a full fledged drama.
  • Definitely seems like a solid film, I'm excited to see this! :D
  • I actually JUST saw the trailer last night and was cracking up. Danny McBride, Aziz from Human Giant and Rogen look great. Cannot wait..
  • By the end of Zack and Miri, watching Seth Rogen was painful. Starting about 3/4ths of the way through the film, every line was incredibly predictable, both in content and delivery. He has done the same shit for his past few movies, and it is getting old.

Anyway, I'm hoping he throws us a change-up here and proves me wrong. I badly want to like him, but he's starting to make it difficult.

Judging by the trailer, it does look different. He doesn't seem to be on the verge of screwing up a relationship, then having to make a big retarded speech like the ones in Knocked Up and Z&M.

These reviews calling it "dark" are definitely giving me more hope. Yay, Seth! Break your mold.
  • im excited to see this as im sure i will pee all over both legs and laugh uncontrollably at the stupidity unfolding before my eyes. sounds like a seth rogen movie.
  • damn it would probably do so much better if that damn paul blart movie didn't come out.. i wish they had released it before that movie.
  • I can never get much out of the trailer for this movie, but some of these reviews leave me optomistic. I enjoy dark humor, but lately haven't seen it executed so well.
Most disparaging review: "...the hardest i have laughed since superbad. one of the funniest movies ever."
Most encouraging review: "Observe and Report was way violent."
  • Jody Hill is a great director and I have complete in him that he can create yet another brilliant comedy in 'Observe and Report'. And as somebody already mentioned a 'dark' movie involving Seth Rogen, what's going on here? I thought he was 'comedies Golden Boy'?
  • I agree. Watch 'Eastbound & Down' or 'Fist Foot Way', Hill is fantastic, he has to ability to create the boldest and funniest self-loathing assholes on screen.
  • um, Seth Rogen is Travis Bickle? No, I don't think so. That guy who wrote that is a FUCKING IDIOT.
  • Simma down nuh.
  • deathmetalhero
So basically if you have a penis you'll like this movie, and no dong= no like? thats what I'm getting from these twitter reviews, or whatever the hell you call the end product of using twitter. There's a name for that right?
  • Tom
Well, he didn't write Zack and Miri- the incredibly unfunny, predictable Kevin Smith did. I see no reason to foul Rogen for that.
  • kindbuddy
I wouldn't call Kevin Smith unfunny but yea he doesn't really allow as much adlib freedom as other directors.
  • I realize that. Doesn't make up for his poor performance that is more or less identical to his performance in every other film he's in.
  • SMITH_FAN
Hating on KS will get everyone here to hate you.

    I know I do.
  • tom
Anyone who would brand himself with his "Daddy's" name on his /film moniker deserves only my pity, and never my scorn. Enjoy your dick jokes.
  • The trailer is funny as hell so I definitely can't wait to see it..
  • raulito
Seth Rogen is WAY over ratted and plays the same character in EVERY movie. I dont have much hope for this movie, im looking foward to Bruno more.
  • I'm sure nobody's looking forward to this more than Bruno, still I think Seth Rogen is funny as hell. He can write as well as act, plus I haven't seen a movie with him in it that I don't at least like (save maybe for Dupree, but everyone needs a paycheck so good for him.)
  • C MAD
Of course this is gonna be good. Jody Hill's the man
  • "Foot Fist Way" is bone dry humor but gets better with each viewing while "Eastbound" is more immediately enjoyable in my opinion but both are well worth watching. Michael Pena is probably best known for his role in "Crash" as Daniel, the guy whose daughter appears to get shot or as Will Jimeno in WTC. He also had a nice supporting turn on a season of "The Shield". In "Observe and Report" he's Rogen's sidekick, Dennis. Just seeing him in his jerry-curl and aviators as he says, "You gonna die!" sold me. I'm still looking forward to "Bruno" and the story about him tricking the Alabama National Guard into letting him sign up and train bodes well. The Ali-G show and Borat are both top notch so hopefully they're able to pull it off again.
  • I'm definitely looking forward to "Observe and Report" over "Bruno" due to the aforementioned "The Foot Fist Way" and "Eastbound and Down" as well as the presence of the great Michael Pena. (He's long overdue for a breakout role and he looks funny as hell in his few trailer appearances.) That and the early buzz that Bruno feels staged at times. I am still stoked for both but my interest in "Bruno" has started to wane a little.
  • I have been meaning to see "The Foot Fist Way" and "Eastbound and Down." I've heard plenty of good things about both of them, especially the latter.
I don't know about the buzz surrounding Bruno seeming "staged." I'm familiar with Cohen's humor, and people's reaction at large to the Borat movie was anything but staged. Nobody I knew needed to pretend that was the hardest they laughed in a long time.
Btw, is that the Michael Pena who was involved with "Crank Yankers" and "Code Monkeys"? Otherwise, never heard of him.
