The Goon Concept and Poster Art

the goon

This weekend we got our first look at the David Fincher-produced computer animated feature adaptation of the comic book The Goon. /Film reader Christopher M alerted us that Blur Studios and Dark Horse Comics cover artist Sean McNally had previously posted some of the very early concept art and a high resolution version of the teaser poster on his blog. Check them out after the jump.

Created in 1999, The Goon, “tells the adventures of a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for a feared mobster. The Goon and his sidekick Franky often get tied up in other machinations, often in relation to the evil zombie gangs. There is a heavy slant on the paranormal.”

Just helping out. Tim Miller (Blur Studios Founder) posted this over at cgtalk
"Tim Miller here (creative director at blur) chiming in as requested. The film is in early development- it has NOT been set up at a studio and isn't in production. Eric Powell is working on the script and we're doing visual development. It was our choice to get the film planned out before we try and get a studio involved. "Early Development" means concept art, some CG animation tests and the script. And Fincher is a producer--as is blur and Darkhorse-- not directing.

To set the record straight for Capt Cook--Blur has never said ANYWHERE or at ANYTIME that we are "making a movie" We avoid hype and ALWAYS speak the truth. There's a HUGE difference between an announcement that a film is being developed and the film ACTUALLY BEING MADE. And we are careful about the distinction. And to be extra-clear...we're not even putting out these (or any other) press releases....it's just media reporting. This went up because Eric was having a big 10th aniversary party and Darkhorse thought it'd be nice to give fans of the comic some eyecandy. I will say though that development is coming along GREAT and I think the Goon will make an awesome film should we be lucky enough to get a chance to make it.

As for Rockfish and Gopher Broke--those are on the backburner as far as development goes.

As for Heavy Metal--we are still VERY actively engaged in trying to bring that to the big screen but don't have it set up.

When we actually start PRODUCTION on a film is when we'll announce something. Until then it's all hard work, hopes, dreams....cuz that's the way it goes with this Hollywood stuff."

I'm very excited for this now. The look of it is very refreshing and the monsters all look really cool.
  • The Goon
Love the comic. Can't wait for this.
  • Stir Crazy
    This looks pretty kick ass.
  • If they're doing the Satan's Fucking Sodomy Baby comic as the plot, then it should be R. Otherwise, I think they can pull it off with a fun hard-PG-13.

Wanted did pretty stinking well for an R-rated comic book film, so I wouldn't say Watchmen will be the end-all be-all or anything for R-rated comic book films.

What I would really like to see is Fincher's adaption of Charles Burn's Black Hole, which he was going to do... But I guess that is no longer in the works...
  • Damn, go Blur! This looks crazy.
  • These pieces are amazing.
  • it looks good, i have high hopes for this.
  • Yeah, blood!
  • Looks pretty sick either way (R or PG-13), and with Fincher producing, it'll at least be interesting.

    in Fincher we trust.
  • Yea and in Fincher we fell (TCCOBB) x.x

I think it would work as a PG-13, there isn't too much r rated material that comes to mind from the Goon.
  • I read Goon and I don't think it needs to be R. I mean I think animated movies can actually get away with violence well. I mean BEOWULF, I think its awesome movie and is a violent PG-13 movie, you can get away with a lot of violence in animation I think, just look at Beowulf. I think GOON could perfectly work with a PG-13 rating, I'm fine with R if they need it, but I don't think the story of Goon particularly calls for an R. Does anyone know when this is going to come out?

When i read the comic i always imagined Frankie sounding like Joe Pesci.
  • The_Flein
You and me both, or after seeing another fan art page somewhere on the web, possibly Steve Buschemi...
  • Honestly if it ends up looking anything like this concept art I'm there. I'd love to see something like this come to life on the big screen. And yes, make it R.
  • i agree with you. I'm wondering if the animation will be as flawless as this poster art.
  • scotty
google Blur Studios and have a look at their stuff. you could well of seen their work and not even known it. I think they've got the animation part covered.
  • Have you seen any of Blur Studios short films or videogame cinematics? They have great animators there.
  • This is gonna be an R-rated animated film?
  • gah
It would be cool but realistically dont expect an R rated comic book film for a while after Watchmen underperformed. I think the violence is cartoonish enought that they can maintain the PG-13.
  • I think that we will not see BIG budget R comic book movies but we will still see R rated comic book movies. I mean Kick Ass will be a hard R. Just don't expect a big budget R rated comic book movie like Watchmen to get green lit anytime soon.
  • gah
True. What do you think the budget is on the Goon? It's hard to tell with CGI films.
  • based on the look of the film, I say around $50-65 mil
