First Look: David Fincher’s The Goon

the goon first look

AICN has a first look at the David Fincher-produced big screen computer animated adaptation of Eric Powell’s Dark Horse comic book The Goon. The project was announced during Comic Con, and the animation is being produced by Blur Studios (the same company which is developing the Heavy Metal movie).

Created in 1999, The Goon, “tells the adventures of a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for a feared mobster. The Goon and his sidekick Franky often get tied up in other machinations, often in relation to the evil zombie gangs. There is a heavy slant on the paranormal.”

I’m still not really clear who is actually directing this movie. Is Fincher directing? Head on over to AICN to see the images in high resolution. I’m actually amazed at the quality, especially considering that Blur Studios has never done an animated feature before (for example, their biggest animated feature film credit involved creating the aniamted effects for the heaven and hell sequences of the South Park movie).

  • I'm stoked whoever is directing...Blur Studios is an impressive animation studio...can't wait to see what they do with Heavy Metal...that Aeon Flux segment sounds epic...

Well, they have done some amazing work on many commercials and lets not forget the great CG cutscenes they did for the X-Men Legends game.
  • Looks awesome! I love Blur, great team. Gentlemens Duel is one of their best. [youtube FXET1kvEOAY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXET1kvEOAY youtube]
  • A Gentleman's Duel ruled.
  • As much as I love Blur and the visual design of Gentleman's Duel... I respectfully disagree that "it ruled"... pretty much none of the comic timings work in this short

Blur is more than up to the task. I'm trying to remember The Goon - recall it being far more zombie-centric than anything Hellboy. I think it can find an audience. Those stills look great and this could be a fun/cool film with everyone involved.

I wasn't to crazy about the new Heavy Metal project until I heard that Neal Asher was on board as a writer. Asher is all kinds of awesome. He is a great choice for working on that.

I'm also a big fan of their short film, "Rockfish." These projects are in good hands.

  • So you weren't on board with a Heavy Metal movie with segments directed by Zack Snyder and "The" David Finch? WOAH! Yeah cool images. I met Powell at a convention, cool dude, he said at the time that he was writing a script and said it was cool to have Fincher apart of it.

The listed directors are great, but I happen to believe that animation should be directed by animators. It's just a different animal. I'm still skeptical about that issue. Given that bias, Asher's involvement is something I value much more with this particular project.
  • Blur Studios does amazing work. Especially the CG work they have done for videogame titles. My only complaint is that I find The Goon to be too much like Hellboy. Both in terms of the main character and the overall world he lives in.

    Minus horns and a tail.
  • that might be the reason why they went with animation rather than live-action also to save money...personally I like the stylized look Blur is going with...
  • Definitely. I love what Blur is doing here. It looks just like the book art which is great. I've always wanted to see them do a full-length Warhammer 40K film too.

    But that's a dream :)
  • Just wait till you see the Heavy Metal film, I had an opportunity to see some art from the film :) It's not Warhammer...but, you'll get a tickle when you see it.
  • that might be the reason why they went with animation rather than live-action...I like the stylized look Blur is going with...
  • The humor is more absurd and witty.

Why must you link me to a story at AICN? I guess you have to do what you have to do - it's their scoop. I used to go there almost daily, but I've just gotten so sick of Harry and his douche-bag friends. Now that Mori's gone, there is almost nothing good left about that site. I am frankly disgusted by all of the typos, name-dropping and gratuitous sex metaphors (Chocolate covered p***y juice, etc) in almost every single article or review. The last thing in the world I want to think about is Harry Knowles having sex, but he talks about it almost daily in the most vulgar and juvenile way possible. Kinda makes me nauseous.
  • get over it.
  • i just can't stop thinking of GOONIES whenever i hear about this...
  • I thought the same. Besides the name being close, the typeface, and art style is close to The Goonies.
  • AntiHero
NICE! Love The GOON. It will be interesting to see the art style come to life.
  • Peter, what would make you think he's directing? He's only credited as producer and I think they would make a bigger deal if he was the one doing this film.
  • When it was first announced there was a few mentions that Fincher could possibly direct, although it was unlikely. Brendon Connelly says it might be Tim Miller http://bit.ly/13Mhs4 who is helming the project
  • Alright, thanks for the info.
  • I don't think it's Tim Miller... he is the Creative Director at Blur and he 'sometimes' is the director on the shorts (like Pixar, depends who develops the story)
  • Why do you think it isn't him? Apparently he's been the single most hands-on individual in the process so far, even scrutinising the script pages minutely.

I'd be interested to hear any info anybody else has as to who might be directing.
  • That's crazy that they have never had a full length film. Personally, I hope that this will be one of those animated films that aren't aimed directly at children especially if Fincher is directing.
  • Agreed. They need to do this right.
  • Blur's showreel proves they are more than capable. It shouldn't be too surprising they haven't done a feature yet -- they are a bunch of young animation guns just getting their foot on the door. Good on 'em! And lucky us, we get to see them blossom from the beginning. If they stick to 'adult' animation, such as Heavy Metal and The Goon, they'll find themselves ruling a niche market.
  • :O
  • Well he is producing the movie. But from what I've read they plan to keep it as what you see and read in the comic.
  • The Goon sounds really interesting and from the pictures looks visually awesome!
  • Check out the comic. It's great.
  • I can see THE GOON having a thick BROOKLYN accent!
  • I thought they were great. To each his own.
  • Oh man that certainly looks awesome!

I'm going to have to check out the comic.
  • i hope the characters move vividly, realistically and convincingly. the images are great but if i dont feel the world is real in anyway i'm sure i'll be taken out of it... either way it looks awesome. (for a bit of benjamin button i was taken by much of the cgi but at some moments it was obvious... but that was live action.) anyway, loooooks super cool
  • I love the Goon. Hopefully the movie keeps the same tone and look as the comics.
  • Mag
Hopefully the butcher the story instead of risking money by staying true to the source ala Watchmen
  • oh hell yeah...I thought The Goon was an okay graphic novel, but would be able to translate into a great movie. Blur is an awesome studio and cannot wait to see this.
  • King Shasta
dude the goon is an unreal comic it won the eisner award so it must be good and as for the guy who said he thinks the goons lik hellboy wel he needs to read both comics before making a statement lik that
