Will Jon Favreau Direct The Avengers?

Jon Favreau

It’s no secret: Jon Favreau would love to helm an Avengers movie. He’s has gone on the record multiple times talking about the possibility. But after Marvel announced their overly ambitious release schedule, Favs was forced to admit that the production schedule would likely prevent him from doing so.

I would love to. Clearly I have stated that The Avengers would be fun. But I look at their release schedule and they have announced ‘Iron Man 2? for 2010 and then Avengers for 2011. I know from experience there is no way I could. I don’t know what they have in mind, but there is no way that The Avengers could be done in a year. Either they are thinking about somebody else doing it or they have something up their sleeve that I don’t know.

But as you now know, Marvel decided to push back the release date of The Avengers an entire year to May 4th, 2012. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

Today a spy over at AICN confirms my suspicions:

“The Avengers is delayed a year because of financing issues but also because the plan is for Favreau to helm it. Everybody here loves the guy and he wants to do it, but it would have been impossible for him to do before the date change given his Iron Man 2 commitments. Also partly the reason why he agreed to do the Stark sequel on such an accelerated schedule was so he could get given first dibs on this. It would still be a punishing schedule for him, so hes not firmly confirmed yet, but he is certainly the presumptive director at this point.”

Clearly Favreau is the best many to helm Marvel’s superhero team-up film. He’s been talking about the idea since he got hired to direct Iron Man, and we all know how that turned out. Can you think of a better filmmaker for the job?

I just really hope the rush doesn't show in Iron Man 2. Can't wait though :)

Marvel's stuff seems to be getting better since they've had more of a hand in making their stuff. Hopefully this will be more so stepping in the right direction. Favreau definitely proved that he's up to it with Iron Man.
  • A good thing...i'd hate to see the Avengers movie rushed just to make money.
  • yeah pushing back the release dates shows how they're aiming for quality rather than quantity...
  • gah
Right now, I'm excited about any project they have in the pipeline, even something obscure like Ant Man because of how well they handled Hulk and Iron Man. And Favreau directing Avengers would be great too even though he isn't the only guy qualified to do it.
  • Sheriff Dewey
That's one lucky basterd. I wish I had his problems. Smart of Marvel to push the date - Favreau's Avengers will definitely be worth it. Though I wonder if he'll be able to handle the super-sized egos of Downey AND Norton (that is - if he decides to get off his high horse and play Hulk again). Either way, 2012 can't come soon enough.
  • would be awesome!
  • box of scraps
I'd rather see some more focus put into getting the two characters films we've not seen yet done right than worrying about an avengers movie just yet. but yeah, when it happens marvel should work around favs schedule.
  • He's the right man for the job. Hopefully he doesn't get burnt out doing Iron Man 2.
  • johnny-pound
    george lucas could direct!
  • [A]
he only screws up his own material
  • Palmer
Favreau doing The Avengers would be great. He understands the source material. And on a related note, whatever happened to Edgar Wright's Ant-Man film?
  • [A]
I hope he does.. if he learns how to make action scenes ;)
  • [A]
    it'll never be done
  • Edgar already wrote the script it's just waiting for financing and that should happen around the time Scott Pilgrim's trailer comes out....I'm sure they have a cast already in mind...
  • For some reason I think that Ant-Man won't happen until after Avengers. It would be cool to see it before but there isn't even a release date for it. I think they should cast whoever they want in it for the Avengers film and spin it off after that with Edgar's script and directing.

I LOVED THE FIRST IRON MAN! i saw it twice in theaters and bought it on blue ray right away but with all the casting announcements of mickey rourke and scarlet joehannson but i dont think either of them can pull of russians i honestly can say i have my doubts with iron man 2 hopefully im wrong and it will be just as amazing as the first movie and war machine will be in it also fingers crossed, btw i really loved rourke in sin city
  • Weyland_Yutani
Some pretty good acting talent slated for Iron Man 2. Seriously, the amount of talent in the cast is pretty amazing for any film, and all for a comic book film...and a sequel at that. I suspect that Rourke will be amazing with Downey Junior, and Scarlett J. will rise up to the opportunity.

Favreau has a decided advantage doing this sequel in that a lot of the main concepts and ideas have been fleshed out in all the time creating the first film. That's a decided shortcut going into the sequel. I'm expecting a much more confident film.
  • I see wait and see four years is a long time. Right now we think Favreau is for the job, but Brannagh or Johnston made make an amazing movie and we would want them to direct it. Let's wait and see...
  • Palmer
Well, I guess it depends on what type of movie you are expecting. With Favreau, it's more of a lighthearted fair mixed with seriousness. With Brannagh, it's more of a sweeping "epic."
  • I really hope that he does. And from what I can tell, it seems like he will.
  • Hopefully I'm wrong , but by this pace, I don't feel Avengers will ever get made.
  • He the right man for the job.
  • I could think of some directors that could make this film but we all want Favreau because he's given us a good movie in Iron Man. He can make a good superhero film and that's reassuring since it sounds like he's got the job for The Avengers.
  • I agree having Favreau on board is reassuring....I really hope Fox's plan to reboot Fantastic Four and Daredevil fails and they have to give back the rights to Marvel Studios...Fox can't seem to make comic book films interesting because of their creative hangups....even Wolverine looks like it could have problems they really messed up the whole Deadpool/Weapon XI thing...

on the other hand Marvel Studios seems to really care about their characters and they've shown that with both Iron Man and Incredible Hulk...they also carefully choose directors that will do the material justice.....I really hope they end up making Ant-Man soon from what I'm seeing with Scott Pilgrim Edgar Wright is a perfect fit...
  • I hope Fox does give up what they own of Marvel characters too. It's possible I guess but highly unlikely. Fox owns some of the best which will bring money to them in the future. Fantastic Four was terrible and they are trying to reboot that. Daredevil was terrible to some and they are trying to reboot that too. I could go on and on of how Fox always seems to ruin awesome things but at the end of the day, it's just going round and round and nothing will change. It would be nice to see if Marvel could get some of their properties back like Spider-Man or the X-men.

Oh yeah, totally agree with you on the Deadpool/Weapon XI thing. I am still hoping that whoever it is, that it not be Deadpool in any way. I am hoping that the toys we saw a few weeks ago were fake or the names were mixed up or at least some explanation as to why Fox would ruin something that would, in the future, bring them some cash. Deadpool is a character that would eventually get his own run just like Wolverine is now and to mess it up like it seems like they're doing is ridiculous. If that character turns out to be Deadpool, I am not watching that spin off in the future.
  • In a fantasy world, Paul Thomas Anderson would direct. He handles big casts better than anyone, and his movies always have the right amount of visual flair. Wouldn't it be fucking outrageous?
  • Jon Favreau or Zack Snyder should direct The Avengers.
  • I doubt Snyder would be able to make Avengers with all the projects he has in development...it would be cool to have Snyder make every comic book film from now on but it's highly unlikely...I'd rather him work on Sucker Punch and The Dark Knight Returns
  • I doubt Snyder would be able to make Avengers with all the projects he has in development...it would be cool to have Snyder make every comic book film from now on but it's highly unlikely...I'd rather him work on Sucker Punch and The Dark Knight Returns...maybe even take over for Rodriquez on Sin City 2
  • I liked Sin City but if something did happen where Rodriguez couldn't do it, I would be all for some Snyder directing that sequel. Snyder is very faithful to the source and I really like that about his films. Snyder could pull off the Avengers movie but why hasn't anyone thrown Chris Nolan's name into this. I could see that happening for sure.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Honestly, after the Batman films, I'd be very surprised if you see Nolan touch a comic franchise for a long time. He most likely found something that he identified with in the Batman character that he wanted to explore with his own filmmaking sensibility.

I'd expect some very interesting, wholly original films coming from Nolan in the next decade. That's a much better thing to hope for anyway.
  • Oh I agree with you, it's just that no on had yet to mention Nolan yet and figured I would. It would be nice to see Nolan touch another Comic Book but I'm thinking he won't make another one ever again. I think he would only think about doing another Batman film if anything.
  • I have to agree... Nolan doesn't seem like a director looking to make a career of creating comic book films...the more original side of Nolan will come out with larger budgets from studios backing him...so we could end up getting to see some Cameron size productions from him...I'm very excited to see Nolan doing science fiction...I'm hoping the film is bigger than The Prestige though...
  • freemachine
Did you ever see Nolan's first film called "Following"? The protagonist has a Batman symbol on his apartment door. Nolan definitely identifies with the Batman character.
  • Zack Snyder kinda overrated in my book.
  • KarlMay
I rather have Jon finish up Iron Man trilogy in 2012 or 2013.

Yes people, there will be Iron Man 3.
  • I agree with vadmspartan, Iron Man 3 will be the Avengers movie. If it's not, I don't see what it would be about since he would be on a team after the Avengers movie.
  • Presumably the team (The Avengers) would come together to take on massive or cosmic threats, for example, an alien invasion a la 'The Ultimates', Otherwise, the individual members of the Avengers would be able to take on small incidents on their own and in their particular geographical area.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Your opinion, but for my taste, if Snyder ever gets a Batman film, it will be a sad day. That would be equally sad for SC2. I'm just not getting the love for Snyder's creative aesthetics.
  • I hope you understand they're Frank Miller's material because the other option is that he directs both Sin City 2 and Dark Knight Returns himself...an even worse option would be David S. Goyer....I'll take Snyder over Miller and Goyer any day
  • I hope you understand they're Frank Miller's material because the other option is that he directs both Sin City 2 and Dark Knight Returns himself...an even worse option would be David S. Goyer....I'll take Snyder over Miller and Goyer any day...Robert Rodriguez isn't the only person who can tackle the world of Sin City Miller's writing does it's job on the page...all you need is someone to direct the actors somewhat and keep the visual sense of the first film...at this point Rodriguez as much as enjoy all his films is really the reason Sin City 2 isn't happening...he's taken on way too many projects Nerverracker, Barbarella, Machete, The Jetsons and he's not really big on sequels as it is...when it's not his own material

Even though DKR was Miller's project, I don't think he can really film the Batman character on his own without the blessings of WB/DC. I'd guess that he could just withhold the projects if he can't direct, but that would surprise me. Either way, no argument that Snyder is a better option than Miller or Goyer, but neither one of those guys has much to show as a Director, he's winning a pretty easy contest. There has got to be other hats to throw into this ring.

Rodriguez has really just gone flakey with all of these projects. It seems like they all have been floating for a long time now. I'll blame RR for not getting Sin City2 going, but I imagine that it's a difficult project to get together with everyone involved. I'll hold out my slightest hope that it eventually gets made as an animated film (I know that is unlikely).
  • I think in that situation WB already knows Snyder is a good enough director to take on Dark Knight Returns and since he's already got Miller's blessing, this might happen eventually one of these decades.

I wouldn't want to see Sin City animated, it would take away what the first one created. I really like the first one and if they could keep that tone and make another ovie, it would be alot better by Box Office numbers. I agree with Chris M on this one because if it's not Snyder doing Returns or the sequel to Sin City, we're going to get a Bret Ratner or a Frank Miller happening that would really ruin both franchises.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Yeah, I'm only suggesting an animated version if all other options fail.

There really are a lot of other choices to direct something like DKR, many that are not on the brink of the conversation. Just zoom back about 5 years and think about a name like Nolan or Favreau being in this conversation. It wouldn't have happened.

Nolan brought a different outlook to Batman and his sensibilities are what make those films so great. I'm just saying that Snyder would bring what he brings, and in that regard, I'd like to see more than cool visuals.

There are a lot of names out there, some known and some merely on the brink. Who knows, the success of the Pixar directors in their live feature debuts, could bring about some very interesting directing options in the future.
  • I get what you're saying, that we should be more open to suggestion and possibly give other directors equal opportunities that Favreau and Nolan both had.

It was alot different 5 years ago, I mean we were still without any good DC Films and Marvel was making tons of money with Spider-Man and X-men at the Box Office.

But I do have to disagree with you about Snyder. Yes right now it seems as though he only knows special effects. He is planning on making films that don't necessarily rely too much on special effects and in that we will see a different director that he one we have so far. I think he did an excellent job with both 300 and Watchmen, especially the non action sequences of the latter. Like I said in an earlier post, he's already got the blessing of the creator and he should get the blessing of the Studio as well. All I'm saying is that if Dark Knight Returns gets greenlit and Nolan doesn't want it. They will definitely go with Snyder.

As for it being animated, I would not want to see it because I think that it is good enough for it's own movie. I guess if all else fails, I wouldn't mind seeing it as an animated direct to DVD in the future.
  • well if you figure Mickey Rourke seems to be the only hold out to return...everyone for the exception of Rourke, Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro needs Sin City 2 for work...the careers of the other actors seems to have stalled
  • Lucky
How about James Cameron (Terminator, T2, Aliens, Titanic) for Avengers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • lol yur mum
Well hells bells. At least they'll have it done before the end of the world.
  • well Ant-Man is a member of the Avengers....so I expect to see him at least in that movie if not his own solo flick before Avengers..
