the time travelers wife

Robert Schwentke’s big screen adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife has been sitting on the shelf for over a year. To give you an idea of how long that has been, The Time Traveler’s Wife went into post production before the non-canceled television series Journeyman even premiered. I mention Journeyman because many people accused the show of borrowing conceptual elements from the Audrey Niffenegger novel. The film is a romantic drama about a Chicago librarian (Eric Bana) with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage. Rachel McAdams and Ron Livingston co-star.

Tonight we have a bit of good news, Warner Bros has finally announced that they will release the movie on August 14th 2009, up against Final Destination: Death Trip 3D and Neil Blomkamp’s Cloverfield-like sci-fi film District 9. Now does anyone have any idea when The Weinstein Brothers intend on releasing The Road?

    it had reshoots in september
  • Cool. Also isn't it nice to see Eric Bana back in the spot light? I mean he's also got Funny People this year, and now this. Sounds like a cool movie. Also Bana kicks ass and even though I don't like the Hulk very much i still say he was good as Banner, so HA!
  • and the bad guy in Star Trek
  • Palmer
Whoa, I actually forgot all about this movie.
  • sleepinginflame
thank you so much for posting this! i've been waiting for this film for forever! one of my favorite books of all time!
  • i'd definitely 100% see this over Final Destination.
  • GCTE
And his directorial debut, the documentary Love the Beast, has just opened Down Under...
  • Every person I know who has read this book has cried while reading it. Why has it been delayed? Does anyone know if it was a troubled production?
  • I didn't cry while reading it. I thought it was an okay read, but really couldn't stand the authorial tone.

For me, the '88 World Fantasy Award winner "Replay" is a far better time-crossed lovers story.
  • interesting, but Inglourious Basterds will come out on August, so there's gonna be stiff competition.
  • I don't think much of the intended audience for "The Time Traveler's Wife" is likely to cross over to "Inglourious Basterds".
  • Finally! The book is fantastic and the cast is spot-on.
  • Branden
"The Road"? I think it would be in September or October. I believe.
  • Scott
....what do you mean when you refer to Journeyman as "non-canceled"?

Last I heard it was canceled-canceled.
  • How similar in concept is this to Slaughterhouse 5?
  • Weyland_Yutani
Seems like an odd August release, but if it pans out as a date movie, maybe it finds a decent chunk of audience. I'd hardly classify Niffenegger's novel as sci-fi, but it definitely could serve as a gateway book into the genre for anyone wanting to tip the interest of a girlfriend. The idea of meeting your wife or girlfriend as a kid has a lot of universal interest. I know I want to see it.

    Did they film in Chicago?
  • Pocketfullofposies
Yep, they did a lot of the filming in Chicago.
  • Finally. There's not many books that I pass on to my wife after I read them, but TTW was one of them. I like the comment about it being a 'gateway-story' for non-sci-fi enthusiasts. When I first mentioned to her that they're making it into a movie and that it was adapted by the same guy that did The Notebook she was very excited to see it. I'd bet that by this point that she's forgotten all about it. Maybe I'll wait until it's released and just surprise her at the theater with it.
  • the only reason i'm interested is because van sant was attached to this for a while. the fact that he saw something in the script or the novel or whatever, makes me a little more excited about it.

and yeah, when does the road come out? c'mon!
  • Yeah, WTF happened to The Road?! I was really looking forward to that one and I keep waiting and waiting and waiting and...
  • Nice to see fellow countryman Bana getting top billing. Too bad about that Hulk fiasco... at least it didn't put him out of work.
  • Well I sure know what I'm seeing on August 14th... FINAL DESTINATION DEATH TRIP 3D HELL YEAH! </sarcasm>
  • The book was not very good, so i don't expect much out of this movie.
  • L2s
the book was awesome, some didnt like the book due to the confusion with the time traveling. but i followed it very well. great read
  • The book was good. But the fact that it was a pretty big seller and I'm sure continues to sell makes me worried about the quality of the film itself. The movie must be pretty awful if they would keep it on the shelves while the popularity of the book would cool. Same goes for The Road, which is one of my favorite books. It was also the film I most anticipated last year and out of no where the whole "it never had a solid release date blah blah blah" thing popped up and has made me worried about the final product ever since. Considering the source material and the talent involved it makes no sense, actually never mind, Weinstein's need to release it at a time when it has Oscar appeal. They could just go all out with an ad campaign and release it at a time when a certain demo is just looking for a good movie to watch instead of time when everything is crowded. Movies make money every month of the year and it's been as obvious as ever lately since it's the cheapest form of entertainment. Movies do not need to be released in May-July, November-December anymore to break the bank. But yeah, sorry about the rambling
  • lbotez
The Road comes out October 16th....

Can't wait to see this movie, TTW.... I really liked Journeyman... I love Doctor Who..

I saw The Time Traveler's Wife and I now know why they kept it on the shelf for ages. Confusing and overly plotted, you'd need a score card to figure out when and where you are at any given moment, never mind why. Downbeat and constantly anticlimatic, it completely lacks comprehension.
