Update: Nikki Finke has now confirmed this story. Scarlett Johansson is now signed to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2, The Avengers and a series of connected Marvel adaptations. According to Finke, Scarlett originally screen tested for the role and lost the part to Blunt, who as you know had to step down due to contractual obligations. Read the original story after the jump.

A couple weeks ago it was revealed that Emily Blunt might have to step down from playing Black Widow in Iron Man 2 due a schedule conflict with Gulliver’s Travels. Since then Eliza Dushku tossed her hat into the consideration pool, pleading fans to start a campaign to make it happen. Unfortunately for Eliza, it seems that Jon Favreau and Marvel have bigger names in mind for the part.

EW has learned that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to replace Blunt as Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff (aka the Black Widow).  Johansson has apparently met with the filmmakers and is interested in the part, and is just waiting for Blunt to officially give up the part. Blunt’s reps are still trying to make the schedules fall into alignment but Iron Man still doesn’t have a schedule or start date in place.

Aside from being sexy and a big name you can slap on the poster, Johansson doesn’t seem right for the part at all. She’s cute but not dangerous. Plus lets not forget, the last superhero film she was in, The Spirit, was just bad and was considered a bomb on every level (not that it was at all her fault… we know who to blame).

Discuss: Who should play the Black Widow? Is Scarlett the right woman for the part?

  • Wasn't there a time that you couldn't cross into certain franchises once you were in franchises? I thought that's what kind of messed up Keaton, since he was Batman, he couldn't really go anywhere else. Bale once held off on tent pole projects because he wanted Bond, but then he gave that up and got into Batman, Terminator...

Sorry Scarlett, you laid down with the Spirit, so I think that's where you shall stay (yea, even though it is going nowhere). Samuel L Jackson gets a free pass because he's a BAMF, and I'd hate to feel the wrath of him as Jules, a snake-fighting frequent flyer, racist cop, Nick Fury or crazed-looney Octopuss. You're flimsy, give up the consideration and allow either Blunt or Dushku to step in.

BTW, I think Johansson is an amazing actress and one of my favorites, but I'm putting my foot down; there's oligopolies cropping up on franchise characters, and I don't think it's fair.

Eh, did anybody actually watch the Spirit? I know I didn't.
  • I think she is a decent actress, I love Lost in Translation and I really like Match Point. She was also pretty good in Vicky Chirstina and Barceclona, though Rebecca Hall stole the show. But she was TERRIBLE in The Spirit, which was bad enough. I would rather see someone like Rachel McAdams in the role... though I have always hoped to see her as Lois Lane.
  • She is the worst main actor in Vicky Christina. Check out the three way scenes with her, Cruz and Bardem. She gets absolutely blown away.
  • she needs to fire her agent!
  • Yeah she's a great actress in the roles that suit her best, this NOT being one of them. There will just be no chemistry on screen, one feels... she'd have to really pull out all the stops to be anywhere near convincing. She'd LOOK GREAT, of course. But that can only take you so far. Remember that, Megan Fox. Always remember that,

  • I think the only role for this character is to serve as the hot piece of tail in the movie. In the end, most of these rumors fit.
  • too many rumors. i'm just going to wait til we hear something more concrete. this is the third person who's been speculated in link with the part, so i'll just take it at that: speculation.

All I ask for is an attractive, decent actress who will be clad in tight black leather.
  • Scarlett Johanson is right for no role because she is a very bad actress. She is not attractive, or interesting in any way. She's gotten too old for Woody Allen so he's moved on th Evan Rachel Wood. I think everyone else in hollywood should follow that lead and leave Johannsen on the side of the road.
  • It's funny how you say that's she's not attractive. Funny.
  • Say what you will about Scarlett, but never say she is not attractive.
  • Is it just me or is Iron Man 2 shaping up to a potential disaster? Way to kill the (surprise) golden goose, Marvel. If it involves black leather, Kate Beckinsale can't be a bad choice. Blunt is still the most inspired choice in my book.
  • Beckinsale would be fun...to look at. and i agree, the more stories come up about this movie, the more it has "hey, remember, the first one was pretty damn good, so this should be too regardless." branded on it.
  • Yeah, with all the casting rumors, characters rumors, plot rumors, etc., I get the feeling that the whole thing is shaping up to be a convoluted mess. I hope it doesn't. I really like Iron Man, I'd hate to see it ruined by a crappy sequel
  • Joe
"not that it was at all her fault"

    why mention it then?

Being an obsessive Iron Man fan, my feeling are best summed up in the following link:

  • If she gets naked for the role, she'll at least make my iron man happy.

Sorry. But for reals, she can be in this movie, just get naked.
  • skippy
well, Scarlett did action in "Michael Bay's The Island" with Ewan McGregor... but I didn't see that. Did anyone watch "The Island"? Was she good?
  • She was good, but she wasn't too involved in the action scenes, McGregor was the one who lead the party. She was like the "scared girl" =/
I can't imagine her as a Russian superspy. It doesn't seem right.
  • Josh
Oh god. Please tell me this is not true. Johansson is a terrible actress.
  • I think the obvious choice is Dushku. This is pretty much the role she's been playing for years, and she's good at it.
  • brian h
Please no. She has such limited talent and would only become a charisma vacuum in the center of a film with much more charismatic actors. I agree that Blunt was the most inspired and I'm not that against Dushku but, please, NO Johansson.
  • Palmer
She's good and all, but I don't think she should play a Russian spy. Doesn't seem like she can pull it off.
  • Give it to Dushku...the girl is a friend to the geek and isn't so dependent on her own brand awareness that would undoubtably come from Johanssen in the role.

Dushku would be able to disappear into the role, whereas Johanssen would alway be tainted with the unholy stench of Spirit juice.
  • Maggie
You know what comes next, right? Clooney as Iron Man with Chris Tucker as Rhodie. Then Schwarzenegger as an over-the-top Ultron with Joel Schumacher directing...
  • You forgot Uma Thurman as Black Widow and Alicia Silverstone as that reporter always going after Tony's balls.
  • Thurman would have been perfect for Black Widow 5 years ago.
  • Yeah that's what I was thinking when I was typing it.
  • Hell, why not Uma now? Why do they have to cast an actress a decade younger than Downey Jr.? Uma's still hot and even Iron Man couldn't blow The Bride off the screen.
  • I like her and all, still, but I think that the studio might think she's too old or they could already be turned off of her because she played Poison Ivy in that God Awful movie a decade ago.
  • hey peter you're crazy i don't care if she's not right for the part i just want to see scarlett, the geeks love their dushku but scarlett is way, way, way, way hotter and the iron man franchise really needs some eye candy, skeletal paltrow doesn't count. plus i really can't wait to see scarlett's terrible impression of a russian spy.
  • See if it was all about looks, she would be perfect. But that accent would be unbearable. Still, they're heading in the right direction, because Black Widow needs to be absolutely drop dead gorgeous. Emily Blunt is simply not pretty enough, Eliza is getting there, and Scarlett would be amazing as far as looks go but couldn't act the part to save her life. This one is really not easy to cast. Maybe an unknown? Whatever, I just pray to God that Olga Kurylenko doesn't get the part.
  • dgloco
Emily Blunt has a secret something that I'd love to see. A stealth sweetness that could be the perfect match for the role.
  • dannyboy
i believe Scarlett Johansson name is tossed in the mix is because her man Ryan Reynolds is playing a marvel superhero Deadpool anyway Scarlett Johansson aint a great actress and i dont think she can pull of Black Widow i rather Eliza Dushku as Black Widow.
  • I wouldn't go that far to say that she's not a great actress.
  • GregoryV
As hot as she is, HELLS NO! Dushku should be seriously considered. Hopefully studios could read the disdain for Johanssen for the role.
  • Ryan McCarthy
jennifer morrison from house... she is the perfect new black widow
    nuff said!!
    thanks /film

  • She better lose some weight and get f*cking buff. Is there time for that?
  • Last I heard they're going to start filming in April. I know they probably can't make that date but I guess that might be enough time for her to get fit.
  • I imagine she'd play Black Widow the same way the played Silken Floss in The Spirit, different characters but not necessarily a different performance. I'm getting sick of her, aside from being some hot eye candy she isn't a particularly great actress (this is the point where you'd say she was good in Lost in Translation, but since then what has she done that amounted to a memorable performance?)
  • She admits to not being a good actress though.
  • I'm still sticking with Blunt on this one. If Emily can't work out a schedule to play the part, than I guess I'd be happy with Scarlett. I just don't want to see Dushku in this movie.
  • Me neither, and I don't really know why.
  • Last I heard they going to start filming in April. I know they probably can't make that date but I guess that might be enough time for her to get fit.
  • Nothing, she has amounted to nothing since Lost in Translation.
  • gah
Ghost World. Speaking of which this is her third comic book movie.
  • Ghost World was before Lost in Translation.
  • gah
Sorry thought you were just looking for another example of a good film she's done.
