At the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Yari Film Group premiered Brett Simon’s Assassination of a High School President, a film noir mystery set inside the world of a John Hughes-style High School comedy. It quickly emerged as one of the underdogs on the schedule to become one of the most buzzed about films at the festival. Unfortunately, Yari Film Group was forced into involuntary bankruptcy, and the film has been sitting on the shelf ever since. This has presented a very serious problem for theatrical distribution, and because of the legalities of bankruptcy court, the timing of this economic downturn and a whole slew of other worst-case-scenarios, Assassination is on the verge of losing its opportunity to have the theatrical run it deserves.

There might still be hope. Studios are still deciding whether or not they want to take a financial risk by buying the theatrical rights, spending cash on P&A and distributing the movie theatrically. Sony has the home video distribution rights, and from a business standpoint, they think it makes more sense to send the film direct to dvd. But I, like many others, think that Assassination of a High School President deserves to be seen on the big screen. What can you do? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, become a fan of the film on Facebook, and spread the word. Distributors like Sony Pictures Classics, Samuel Goldwyn, Fox Searchlight, etc need to see that there’s an audience out there waiting for an opportunity to see this film.

Why should you care about this movie? Here is what some other people have said about the film:

  • Ken Evans called it “a film that I fell in love with within the first 15 minutes” and “I would have walked right back into the theater to see again if I could have.”
  • Mel Valentin called it “wholly satisfying, enthralling high school-noir every bit the equal of Brick.”
  • MTV said “the film is stuffed with so many rapid-fire laughs that you’ll need to watch it multiple times — especially so you can memorize all the super-quotable lines.”
  • Film School Rejects said it one of those films that makes you “want to run to the top of a mountain and shout its praises”, calling it “smart, sexy and rich with supporting characters that are at some points as interesting as those who get the spotlight.”
  • ComingSoon called it “a funnier and more biting look at high school than any we’ve seen in some time”.
  • UGO calls it “nothing short of brilliant, a hilarious noir-comedy mixture in which each character is more colorful than the last.”
  • FirstShowing says “The comedy never stops, the story is full of twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, and overall this is one of the best balances of mystery and comedy that I’ve seen in ages” and calls it “a great movie that deserves endless appreciation.”
  • Aint It Cool News says “it’s witty characters and style make it the kind of film you’d want to visit a few times over just to hang out with it a little more.”

Many people have drawn comparisons between this film and Rian Johnson’s indie masterpiece Brick, and it would be hard not to. As I wrote in my original Sundance review “Assassination is not a copy of Brick, in fact, it was written before Brick. Imagine if John Hughes had made Chinatown set in a High School. So where Brick was a hardcore film noir story set in the world of high school students, Assassination is a high school movie with a noir mystery storyline.” I always thought of it as a more accessible, more marketable film…

  • dang. i haven't even heard of this project yet, but i really hope it gets to see the light of day on the big screen.

sounds too good to be direct-to-dvd.
  • I'd go see that. You hear that studio execs? I got a big fat $10 bill waiting with your name on it if you release this movie.
  • i would love to see this in theaters and it would be a shame if it went straight to dvd.
  • i heard about this project like 3 years ago when the OC was still airing. I have wanted to see it since and have been wondering to it's where abouts, thank you /film.
  • I want to see this either way.. This has been around for awhile but hopefully it'll be released on the Big screen..
  • BROOKLYN
    mischa barton looks hot.

    this movie looks hot too.
  • This sucks - I still had it marked down as coming out a couple of weeks ago, and then I was like, where did it go? I guess this is where. And any film that in any way makes people bring up Brick has to be worth me checking out, even though I can do without Mischa Barton.
  • I love all the sites that you mention except Film School Rejects. What hacks.
  • Great film. Saw it at last year's SXSW. This is incredibly disappointing. Maybe it'll have a surprising resurrection a la Slumdog Millionaire.
  • samu
That font is a problem. It makes it look like "Ass Assination of a High School President", which could mislead regarding content.
  • GregoryV
WTF?! Since I missed Sundance, I've been waiting to see this film in theaters and now they're thinking of releasing it direct-to-video, are they nuts??? I'll be happy with a limited release at least.
  • Ryan
    Hey,
People who do stuff with this movie. I want to see it. So put it in theatres.
    good.
  • just read your review, sounds like a very cool film. Its a shame its not getting more attention.
  • I was looking everywhere for this movie on the 27th (its original limited release date) and I will be there opening weekend if it ever hits theaters.
  • the name alone bring my attention. I would really like to see this!
  • Brick was amazing, and I love film noir. This sounds like a great flick, and I truly hope that it hits theaters because I've been looking forward to it for a year now.
  • uk < USA
    Oi! BRICK BLOWS.

    cheers you wankers!
  • The comparisons to Brick are kind of scaring me away from this. I absolutely hated that movie. I'd be willing to give this one a shot though, maybe it is better.
  • Tokubetsu
As long as it gets a wide enough release for me to see (god why do i live in the middle of nowhere?) I'd see it. I loved Brick.
  • ryanmoody
I saw this Film when it premiered at Sundance, and it was definitely worthy of a national release. It is hysterically funny, intriguingly mysterious, and deeply influenced by classic Film Noir. Also Bruce Willis's performance as a Desert Storm Vet turned high school principal is one of his best in a supporting role.
  • I don't think any movie should be straight to DVD, even if it is crappy. Also, this sounds cool.
  • Blast...I forgot how badly I wanted to see this movie. Really hope it doesn't get a straight to DVD release.

“Assassination is not a copy of Brick, in fact, it was written before Brick. Imagine if John Hughes had made Chinatown set in a High School. So where Brick was a hardcore film noir story set in the world of high school students, Assassination is a high school movie with a noir mystery storyline.”

^This makes me really happy; I thought (despite my interest in it) that this movie was going to be a direct rip off of Brick and now it seems (based on that excerpt from your review) that the two only share noir-like qualities. Having read your review and all the excerpts from other sites, I can officially say I'm a lot more amped for this movie and I really hope it gets some sort of release.
  • While I haven't seen the film, is there something wrong with the fact that it is going to DVD after a successful film festival run, where more people will be able to see it, and champion it sooner than if it got a minimal theatrical release? It isn't likely that this would open on 2,000 screens in any case.

If you push to delay the DVD release, so that it can open in a theatre in NY and LA, where a few hundred will see it, that is just hiding the film away.

Look at FANBOYS, which was given a tiny theatrical release because the fans wanted it, and no one saw it. Wouldn't it have more buzz now if it was on DVD? FANBOYS is now thought to be a box office bomb. Isn't that worse than being labeled direct to DVD?

With so many major films only playing a week or two in multiplexes, we are getting to the point where there should be no shame in direct to DVD releases.
  • Sounds like something I'd see in the theaters, don't send it direct to DVD!
  • Can a slashfilmer get a decent trailer, assuming one exists? YouTube is populated with extremely brief and often terribly compressed teasers.
  • Jarrett OBrien
If this film doesn't make it to theatres, than we truly are in the economic pooper. I saw this at Sundance, and the entire crowd was laughing out loud. A Sundance film with Rappaport, Willis, and a whole slew of up and coming young actors / actresses deserves better. The f'n soundtrack alone is worth it. It's not brick either, and am not sure why people only see the similarities of a) high school setting and b) scandal and can't see beyond it. I hated Brick. Honestly, this country needs to laugh and High School Musical and Twilight aren't cutting it.
  • /ambient
    I want to see it!!!!!!

    IN THEATERS!!!!!
  • Sean
I have been reading up on this movie for a while now. Its unfortunate the whole bankruptcy situation. Ive been telling all my friends via facebook, myspace, etc. To keep an eye out for this movie. I loved Reece Thompson in Rocket Science, and I love the noir mystery/high school style of Brick...when I heard the combination of the two it made me do backflips inside. Im going to keep on spreading the word...
  • Come on, somebody step up and buy the rights to distribute this. I've had "Assassination of a High School President" on my booking sheet for months now. As we enter the dead zone of summer for art/indy films it's stuff like this I've been counting on to draw people in. I NEED this movie which translates to I'll RUN this movie if somebody would just pick it up.
  • VH1
I was luck enough to catch this movie at Sundance and it was incredible. Great acting, story, music, and mischa barton wa(waweewa). I hope it gets a theatrical release, I would see it again.
  • Amanda
I'd go see this in the theaters for sure, probably twice. I've been waiting to see it since Sundance!
  • Pablokenfold
Yes, your article has me very interested in watching this movie now. Of course I'd much rather watch it in theaters, I'll keep an eye out for it.
  • That's just sad. Beverly Hills Chihuahua opens in more than 3 thousand theaters and a movie like this goes straight to DVD.
  • Not sure I care either way I'll see it on DVD
  • I've been pumped for this film since I first heard about it, and Sundance reviews only made me want to see it more. To only see it on dvd and not in theaters would be lame!
  • Andrew
I really want to see this movie. i wouldn't have first thought it, but from everything i've read, it sounds hilarious!
  • Can you blame a studio for passing on this? Similarly hyped Sundance films from '08 were: The Wackness, Choke, Smart People, Be Kind Rewind, Hamlet 2. Most of them met with middling reviews and even worse box office returns. Also, when's the last time the internet fought for a film and had it become a success? Films like "Snakes on a Plane", "Fanboys" and "The Women" haven't given the blogosphere a good rep in terms of predicting quality/box office success
  • David
All those films ranked in good money. They were not huge blockbusters but they grossed good money for small films. But the difference between Assassination and those films is Assassination isn't your typical sundance films (neither was Hamlet 2 actually...). It is a good smart funny comedy with dark humour and not a stupid arty look-at-me film. And fanboys went into like ten theatres, how much money were you xpecting it to make? And The Woman was hyped up but the film turned out to be shit, and Snakes on A plane didn't doas good as it wwas supposed to but still grossed alot of money.
  • Good money? The Wackness made 2 million. Choke made 3. Hamlet 2 was purchased for 10 million, had a fairly sizable ad campaign, and made 5 million. People compare AoaHSP to "Brick" and that film made 2 million. Unless a studio thinks this film is going to break out, it really doesn't make any business sense to dump millions into a theatrical release that would be little more than a way to advertise the upcoming DVD release. The odds are stacked against the film recouping its acquisition and prints costs, never mind any sort advertising budget. At best, it should a simultaneous release: a few theaters and DVD on the same day.
  • David
Why are you trying to give this film a bad rep? A lot of people here want to see this ilm go to theatres. All we want really is a couple theatres and a DVD release a couple weeks later. Or in my opinion it should go wide....If it opens in 1500 theatres or more and with good promotion I am 100% sure it will be a hit.
  • I'm not trying to give it a bad rep. I'm just pointing out how it really doesn't make sense for anyone but Sony (who already owns the DVD rights) to roll the dice on it and even Sony is probably better off just sticking with the DVD release. Could it be a surprise breakout hit? Of course. Do I think Sony should have bought the rights and replaced Fired Up in their schedule with AosHSP? Yes. But right now, it's more of a risk than history says it is worth (especially in today's economic climate)
  • David
Oh I cant wait to see this movie in THEATRES. Put this film in about 500 theatres or something like that. Or make sure its playing in Winnipeg so I can go see it ten times!
  • I'm so intrigued now.
  • Sue
I can't believe it might go to DVD first. I have been waiting to see this film for so long. Are the studio's crazy? With the reviews it got, it sounds like a sure thing.
  • Comparable to Brick? I'm sold. So much in fact that saving it may lead to it only playing in a theater an hour away from me so I will do my part and do nothing and hope that it gets released directly to dvd. Why would I want to extend my wait by few extra months while it gets released in a couple hundred theaters? :p
  • 790
Yeah I greee with Daft_Krunk, release this wideschool !!!!
  • aLiCiA
I've seen this movie several times, and I know it would do well if it got the chance to be seen in theatres. It would be a waste if it went straight to dvd. This is a movie that deserves to be seen. This is so stupid!!!!!....the fact that it might not come out in theatres! I mean reeeaaallllyyyyy! and Reece Thompson is HAWT!!!!!!!1
  • njs
Bring it on! This is a movie I would Love to see in a theatre!
  • Seen it and loved it. Please get this film to theaters asap! It'd be a true shame to have this go straight to DVD...there are so many great newcomers in this film that deserve to have this film have a chance to do well!
  • RYB
I've seen this film, and I would pay to see it several more times and also to buy the DVD. It really is fun film with memorable lines, great music and Reece Thompson. What more could you need in a movie!
