Marvel has announced a series of new release dates for its upcoming comic book films. The new dates make more sense from a production standpoint than the old ones, and logically lead to the eventual release of The Avengers film, which promises to combine many of  Marvel’s characters, in 2012. Hit the jump to see the new dates.

Thor, which was originally scheduled for a fairly soon July 16, 2010 release date has now been moved to June 17, 2011.

The Captain America movie moves a few weeks back from May 6, 2011 to July 22, 2011.

The Avengers film will be released almost a year later than originally announced, moving from July 15, 2011 to May 4, 2012.

In addition, the studio also confirmed that Sony’s Spider-Man 4 will be released on May 6, 2011. Iron Man 2’s original release date of May 7, 2010 (just a little bit over one year from today) remains intact. So, overall, it looks like 2011 will be an insane year of comic-book superhero films. Here’s hoping the eventual release of The Avengers is able to deliver on the insane potential of this whole slate of films.

They'll still need to kick thier asses and find us a Thor if that rumor about him being in Iron Man 2 is true. Which I hope it is. Also hope they don't wait too much longer to announce who Capt is gonna be.
  • Thank god Vince McMahon isn't getting Triple H into the Thor movie.
  • Django
But I still do feel that throwing someone like him in a supporting role would be magic for the box office. Unless of course they get John Rhys Davies for Volstagg, in which case I can't imagine having those two on the same set! Maybe he can be a human on earth that thor encounters.

Whatever - I trust Branagh to deliver Marvel's first dramatically riveting film. I do wonder if they'll have the balls to throw some comedy in there, too.

B/c the tongue in cheek approach is really what made Spidey & Iron Man a success - and simultaneously killed Hulk & Daredevil, etc. due to lack of...
  • Man I hate HHH.

I wish they would not do The Avengers at least another 6 or 7 years. Knock these first few comic books out. Then work on The Avengers. I dont feel they will capture the feel of it. But since they are starting to do all these Marvel cartoons and DC i really wish they would do An Infinity Gauntlet. Same style as the avengers cartoon. THAT WOULD ROCK!!!
  • no word on the Wonder Woman movie project, David?
  • I'm sure they'll announce something about Wonder Woman eventually. Besides Green Lantern, everything else is 'hush hush' on the WB/DC front. Maybe that's for the best. I nominate Moon Bloodgood for Wonder Woman. I just want someone who is exotic looking, not just Angelo Saxon.
  • Josh
Wonder if this means Favreau's a contender to direct "The Avengers," now that it's a bit further removed from IM2.
  • andries price
ironman 2 and the avengres is better than spiderman 4
  • gah
Marvel made a very smart move by moving the dates. Rushing a movie like this could really wreck it.
  • Seriously. You can't debut Captain America and then debut The Avengers in the same year. You need to let the audience breathe a little.
  • gah
Not just that. I think that Branaugh needs more time to develop Thor and Marvel needs more time to organize the Avengers with the filmmakers helming the solo adventures. And maybe it'll give Favreau time to direct the Avengers.
  • "And here is Captain America, he's a war hero, fighting Nazis, and in the next month you gonna see him fight alongside with Hulk and Thor. Get Ready". =D
  • gah
He gets frozen, and he wakes up years later. Whats the problem? The "man out of his time" is the coolest aspect of Cap.
  • That's not what i meant at all.
  • seriously. don't pull a Twilight.
  • This date shuffling might allow Favreau to direct the Avengers, something he's long expressed interest in doing. Which in my opinion would be for the best.
None of the other hired Marvel Directors would be able to take control of production in time. Also, Robert Downey has expressed concern over the potential the "reality" they established in Iron Man being destroyed by Thor and Hulk. With Favrau at the Helm the tone will stay consistant and the concerns of their biggest star will be eased.

It certainly creates an interesting opportunity to pit "Science" against "Myth". As in the comics, they would benefit from amplifying the tension and conflict between Tony Stark and Thor, and what they ultimately represent.

Perhaps Tony Stark and Donald Blake form a very functional relationship, but every time Thor's let out it peaves Stark off to no end b/c he's so reckless and uncontrollable.

But if Stark could convince Blake to utilize Thor toward a common end - in defeating a mythical common enemy like Mandarin, Fin Fang Foom, or a Loki / Red Skull alliance (?), then Thor can be convinced to trust Stark.

It's a slippery slope - I'd trust Favreau to walk it well, and it's good to see Downey's investing his rep in the integrity of the 'world' created by Iron Man: the Movie.

We also must keep in mind Iron Man I's success is in large part due to it's "Ordinary Man becomes superhero and fights terrorist financiers" connection to real world concerns. Mandarin's a tough one to tackle w/out alienating Chinese audiences (perhaps if he never actually appears on screen it'd work) - but Hydra is an organization that could be said to exist in the real world.

I'm just sayin' is all. Hyup! I've got your script write here, Mr. Favreau!

How do you know? Are you from the future? What's the Avengres? I'm sure you mean Avengers.
  • Dude he's from the future! I'm guessing he knows that Avengers will be renamed to "avengres".
  • Avengres are the Italian Avengers.
  • Django
Now THAT's a movie I'd like to see!
  • boomer
    Guys its the afghanistinanies
  • I'm still pulling for Fabio.

    I can't believe I'm not Thor.

Looks like Marvel is going to be opening a can of whoop-ass on DC in the next couple of years.
  • Binaryshock
I personally think it's really too late for DC as a whole to really do anything in terms of competing with Marvel. Apart from batman I can't see them doing any semblance of justice to the characters seeing as how they love to crap all over Superman. Currently the Marvel movies have been pretty high quality, even the "shitty" ones, compared to the DC stuff (and I mean DC universe not the "indy" stuff that they absorbed over the years) I really can't see how they can turn things around, when it seems they always have thier heads up thier asses, with the length of time it took to get Superman out, and it was trash, the amount of times Wonder Woman and Justice league have been canceled and started up again, the simple fact that they won't consider putting in the people already cast as Batman and Superman in Justice League just screams "are are retard hear us dumb".. anyways I digress
  • bigfatgoalie
I don't know. I think they need to just start actually caring about what they are putting out there. i.e. Catwoman. What the fuck was that? Superman Returns is a prime example of D.C. getting fucked because they rushed it. D.C. also faces problems with big screen adaptations because they're characters are too "god like" which worked during the golden age of Comics. It'd be pretty hard to sit down and write a compelling story about someone who just kicks ass and has very little conflict. Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, they can't be stopped. As much as I want to watch a dude dressed in green kick ass for an hour and half, the Warner Bros is in the business of making money, and that just wouldn't sell. If they can create a solid universe where its acceptable for these characters to be present, then D.C. is back in business. You hear about all these rumors about who is going to helm the next Superman movie. First it was Mark Millar, then the Wachowski brothers? Remember when Nick Cage was gonna put on the red cape?
  • Name
dc needs to scrap the doomsday cartoon and do a live action death of superman! use the graphic novel for the script and story board and then ust the reign of supermen series for sequels
  • I'm looking forward to these movies, but is it almost TOO much? I mean it's three movies in three months, Iron Man the year before that, and The Avengers the year after that? I like Marvel a whole lot, but I don't know if I want *that* much of them.
  • Django
You do have a point. Maybe Marvel Studios could do well by exploiting some of its other properties, like KABUKI: the movie, or Powers (which I could easily see as a riveting WB style cartoon or cable/HBO series) or ... well, I guess there just isn't that much to go around over at marvel!

If DC decides to start cinefying their VERTIGO properties ... well then, Marvel Studios would DEFINITELY have a run for its money!
  • Maybe take a year off. Skip 'Captain American' and 'Thor' when they're in theaters, and catch them on DVD in 2012 the week 'The Avengers' hits.
  • No word on Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie?
  • Thor in June then Cap in July. It'll be interesting to see how they handle this on the marketing front seeing as people might decide to choose only one to see.

I don't know, I'm just worried all these movies right after one another will just quicken the eventual bursting of the superhero bubble. Won't fatigue eventually just set in?
  • Django
Not if Watchmen the movie has anything close to the counter-intuitive effect Watchmen the Novel had on superheroes in the comics industry.

Judging from reactions, MOST people were disappointed that Watchmen wasn't actually about Super Heroes, in the end.

Super Heroes are the new Cowboy movies. Something cool dads take their sons to.

I do think, though, that both Thor and Cap movies would benefit greatly from appearances by the single coolest dude in the Marvel Studios Universe: Robert Downey mutha-f*cking Junior.

Oh, and Samuel L. Fury as well. Of course.
  • craig
how Wonder Woman end up in this confession shes DC
  • Oh man, thank god they moved Thor. I'm still worried that they set a release date for Iron Man 2 before they got to work on it. When you set release dates this far in advance, you get Spiderman 3. They announced that release date before Spiderman 2 even came out. When you let the director take their time and work at his own pace, you get Dark Knight and Iron Man.
  • Django
I 110% agree with you, Dank erstetter.
  • Kevin
i think there's a big difference between Sam Raimi, and Chris Nolan.......... And thats the difference between Spiderman 3 and The Dark Knight.
  • I have no faith in Thor, or the Avengers movie. Avengers will have too big of a competing cast, and Thor is just Thor. The marvel one offs are decent, but I doubt they will work combined in the medium.
  • Jaime
Lets not get carried away thinking a huge cast = egos and overloading of rubbish.
Sir ian mckellan, patrick stewart, hallie berry, hugh jackman, james marsden, fameke jansen proved it in x-men.
don't doubt marvel... their comics and collection of well known characters have been successful for so long for a good reason. if anything doubt the directors'. Ang lee proved that.
  • To be honest, I'm mostly pumped for Cap...well was. Until I learned the Narnia writers we're doing that.

    Avengers needs to get Bay-ified.
  • I am afraid it's sad news. All the hype around Iron Man made Marvel believe they can do any superhero movie and that it will be huge success each time.
But the reality strikes back and they see that it's not going to be easy, especially Avengers.
I expect another delay, and maybe even cancellation for both. Too bad. :(
  • I think the initial date offerings were provided mainly as a means to get audiences and stock holders excited about the newly minted Marvel Studios. It was a posturing more than anything.

The date shift simply reflects a more realistic schedule logistically considering 'Captain America' and 'The Avengers' would have to film at the same time with some of the same actors. With this change, it also allows for the possibility of Jon Favearu directing 'The Avengers', which, according to a recent scooper on AICN, is what Marvel is hoping.

These movies will certainly not be canceled. Now that Marvel is its own studio it has to put out such superhero films to exist. It seems they want to do things right, lining up actors for multiple appearances, developing screen plays, etc. It's too early to despair.
  • Cat
Ruining these movies will affect marvel forever.
  • Marvel's stock (MVL) has hung in there pretty well in this crap market. At $31, it has only declined down to $24 since the depression started. After this news, stock only down fifty cents. Could be a good entry level - I'm a buyer at $23 !!!
  • How many Superheroes movies can you have in 1 summer?
  • Jonas Imp.
Five. No more than Five. :)
  • Loki
If the Avengers movie had a guest appearance by Wolverine, DC might as well just bury its head in the dirt!
  • I agree, maybe just a cameo by Wolverine and possibly Spiderman would be epic.
