Mediacorp scriptmeister Robert Mark Kamen has been telling the Los Angeles Times all about his next assignments for the big French action factory, and both of the films they namedrop are seemingly inevitable responses to the studio’s past glories.

Besides a sequel to Taken, the sleeper hit of the year (so far), Kamen is also crafting the screenplay for a US set rehash of Banlieue 13 - or District B13 as it was already renamed in English speaking territories. The original took an American paradigm - Escape From New York, essentially - and gave it such a specifically French spin that, frankly, I don’t know what sort of mess we’ll end up with after it gets spun back the other way.

Kamen’s interview reveals no more about these two projects, but does go into great detail about his relationship with Luc Besson, his co-conspirator in some of the very best, if occasionally rather politically distressing, actioners of recent years.

Luc thinks up about eight film ideas every day. Some are great, some are horrible. He sees all these images in his head, so when we sit down, I’ll say, ‘I like this one’ and we lie around the house — or the hotel room — and he dreams up these amazing images and I try to bring some structure to the story while we think up the characters and who they are and what they do–their arc, so to speak. Then I go away and write.

I assume the upcoming Besson-produced From Paris With Love was one of the 8 daily ideas that Kamen found more horrible than great as he hasn’t taken a credit on that one and Adi Hasak has scripted with Besson.

Apparently, Besson and Kamen have given each other the nicknames of Shrek and Donkey as they are, respectively, portly and chatty. They don’t mind these labels, but some other nicknames might stick in the craw somewhat: the LA Times ask if Besson would like to be called “The French Joel Silver,” which Kamen swats back amusingly -

Of course, he’d be insulted — wouldn’t anybody? Even my dog would be insulted if you called him the dog version of Joel Silver.

Taken is still on cinema release in the US, but widely available on DVD in many other territories. It comes fully recommended as a witty, yet still silly, mix of slam-bang and blah-blah that hits some truly cute action beats along the way; Banlieue 13 can be had on DVD for bargain prices around the globe and really shouldn’t be missed by anyone who likes their combat and chase scenes to play out like a showing off competition between gravity defying B-Boys with tops made out of rubber and bottoms made out of springs.

Does anyone else have the problem of Slashfilm only half-loading images on its pages or not at all?

I see this problem on Firefox and IE for a few weeks now at least. It's frustrating.

happens to me sometimes, just press f5, at least works for me.
  • same here.

I can't imagine a US re-make of "District B13" without using the principle actors from the original. There is so much parkour in that movie that I can't think of any US actors who could pull it off without the use of cables and CG. Using FX to replace sheer physical ability would just cheapen the effect.

Agreed, but that'll likely be a problem with the producer/director/choreographer. I think there are likely many stuntmen and parkour artists out there (eg., yamasaki) that cuold do a good job, but likely it won't look or feel near as good as Banlieu 13 did.

I'm also afeared that they'll "Michael-Bay"-it up with quick cuts so you can't actually see what's going on.

B13 wasn't really that great a movie, actually; it's really just a parkour showcase for David Bell and Cyrill Rafaelli

I don't want a remake of Districk B13 but bring on Taken 2.

My idea for the sequel. We find out that the other girl's dad was also a former special forces guy and he finds out that Liam Neeson didn't even try to save his daughter so he goes on a mission to kill Liam Neeson.
As the film goes along we get one-on-one fights between the other girls dad and the guys Neeson was having the BBQ with at the start of the first film. Than we get the big showdown between Neeson and the other dad.
That's what I want to see.

no wait... how about bringing in the janitor at the construction site where the chase happens... he wants to take revenge becasue of the mess he had to clean up...! :P
Taken 2 shouldn't be made, cos taken was a full filling movie, hearty full filling movie... a sequel will ruin it... What Liam neeson allows every year his daughter to go to foreign countries where she waits to get kidnapped, so that he can bust that syndicate also ?
  • I'm a big fan on Taken. I will totally pay more to see the film. Neeson is one of my favorite actors in all time.

By the way, it would be a plus if Jean Reno had a part in Taken 2
  • shoot hamaguchi
Yes, Jean Reno as the other father trying to kill Liam Neeson for not trying to save his daughter
  • It says "Distinct 13" in the first paragraph. You should fix that.
  • Geet
Yeeesh, learn your films BC! DISTRICT B13.
  • I see something distinct.. anyway, loved B13 but woudn't mind an American version, figured it was inevitable so it's not really breaking my heart much. Taken 2 though... what is she like, taken again? It would really depend on if the script was good because I think Taken was a solid action film on its own merits and doesn't need a story continuation.

I can't think of any plot lines except maybe that singer actually does get attacked/kidnapped, or one of Brian's friends needs his help and it's a trap executed by relatives of the more important people who died in the first one.

Oh god, Taken was awful. By year end it's going to be that movie movie that usually comes along once a year that has tremmendous success and I don't even understand it in the slightest. I hated it. As for District 13, what made it so often was the fact that is was French and kicked satisfying amounts of ass. As stupid as that sounds, those were the main reasons why I enjoyed it. Not that I care for the French all that much, but its originality would obviously be lost and so would my interest.
  • I have friends who swear blind Taken was one of the best films they have ever seen. They consider it far superior to Man on Fire. Silly friends. But they will be excited by news of 'Taken Again'.
  • REAL6
It's not one of the best films but i do like Taken alittle more then Man on FIre. Denzel is starting to play himself in every movie saying "My NIgga"

Not that hes a bad actor. But hes like Morgan Freeman. He always plays himself. Maybe the Mandella movie will redeem him!!!
  • District B13 was an awesome movie, im still waiting to see part 2. An american remake could be fun, but they would need to have Cyril Raffaelli in on the production.
  • twwww
district was areally surprising movie/ i remember seeing the previews and not really being interested much but then my buddy made me watch it and its really great, especially if you speak french youll get all the subtleties and jokes
  • Who's gonna get taken in Taken 2? That bitch wife of his? I'm not sure anyone would care.
  • Arthur
Luc Besson is the most influent producer in France but he's a shame ! I can tell you, I'm French. Maybe he has 8 ideas per days but there are always the same. Please don't talk about this man anymore. Talk about Jacques Audiard or J-F Richet, THIS is cinema...
  • Arthur, because i'm from Czech Republic and i have seen both parts of Jacques Mesrine's lifestory in cinema, I have no other choice then agree with you, it is shameful that Luc Besson is much more popular in the world and only a few people not from Europe saw what excellent work has J-F Richet done, outstanding movies, keep it that way
  • Arthur
I'm happy to hear you, my neighbour friend.
  • ADe
taken 2? WTF? enjoyed leaving my brain at the door for 90 mins to watch nesson kick sum ass but i really dont see a sequel working.

as for the district 13 remake, i might giv that a miss altogether.......fans of the original will hav the sequel before then so i dont really see much point in that either.

pluse i agree with freemachine, which hollywood actors could meet the physical requirements for this?? the only actor i can think of with even a chance of pulling this off and putting sum bums on seats would be the stath! but i guess that would knida turn out like transporter 4!
  • adE
hmm just another idea, i'm pretty sure David Belle can speak english not sure about Cyril Raffaelli though..............but a remake/sequel set in america with the original 2 leads could b kick ass........im sure the writers could come up with pleanty of reasons for them 2 leave paris and go to america
  • I don't want neither.
  • Americans can't come up with anything original so they keep doing remakes and stealing foreigners' ideas.
  • I dont think foreigners have any good ideas either. Its hollywood - not Americans broomy. You need to understand that. Hollywood, not america. Enjoy
  • When discussing movies, in a context like this one, it should be obvious that "Americans" refers to "American studios". Just like when talking international politics, "Americans" usually means "American government". So stop being so sensitive about it. Also, if you look at Asian/European cinema, foreigners DO have better ideas than Hollywood, or execute them better. Horror movies are probably the best example; Americans have almost forgot how to make a good one.
  • Yeah, Neeson is a bad-ass! Bring on the sequel baby!
  • I'm all for a Taken sequel. That was one of the best movies of the past 6 months or so. Liam Neeson at his best.
  • I'm amazed Hollywood doesn't consider remaking Taken. It was made by the French, after all.
  • I'd almost wanna see a prequel. Liam Neeson you know at the end of his career, the job that made him pick his daughter over work. If you do a sequel and you have is daughter or some other close family member get taken again, idk, to me its seems sketchy. Like how many bad days can Jack Baurer have but with less excuses.....

And like they could go the 'he's back in the game, mercenary for hire' route but you know all his relentless and righteousness from Taken came from his desire to save his daughter and i cant see it being the same with someone else's kid
  • You mention escape from ny. WHERE IS KURT RUSSELL, WHY ISNT HE WORKING? SERIOUCLSY , HE SHOULD BE BACK IN THE GAME. WAS GREAT IN VANILLA SKY. RUSSELL... PLEASE COME BACK!!!
  • someone
vanilla sky was completely LAME! WORST MOVIE EVER! Kurt Russell was way better in the Stargate movie (also WAY BETTER MOVIE than vanilla sky)!
  • 'Taken 2'? The first film, was a enjoyable, action-romp, with little in the way of a narative that involved thinking (it was really a 'popcorn action-thriller'), which I must admit I enjoyed thoroughly myself. But, the film tied itself up and put a little bow on the top for good measure. 'Taken 2', no thank you.
