Lately a lot of speculation has arisen regarding James Cameron’s AVATAR, that imminent, shadowy monolith of 3D cinematic game-changers due Fall 2009. There were rumors that a precedent-setting chase scene in the first-person was facing problems, and an even more random and recent rumor that Cameron had rejected at least eight different variations of a debut trailer. C’mon, we expect no less than double digits. For myriad reasons—most involving technology and theatrical presentation—this $200 million film is the Area 51 of the blogosphere. It’s strange that so many of the rumors have a twist of negativity to them akin to “Johnny’s volcano science experiment is going to fail.” Fear of the unknown? Cameron took the time to chime in today at AICN to reiterate that his film is next levs so STFU…

“As usual the rumor mill is grinding out mostly spurious stuff. …I have no idea where that [rumor] came from but I haven’t rejected any trailers (yet) since I haven’t seen any yet. They’re still working on them for presentation, which presumably will be soon. …Every once in a while, as we are absorbed in some intensely detailed discussion about sub-surface scattering or the way a tail is moving in the animation, I’ll just stop and have this moment of clarity, as if seeing it for the first time. And I realize that’s what the lunar astronauts must have felt like.”

Does that analogy to walking on the moon sound like damage control? Not at all, right? Rastafarian babe Thundercats or not, AVATAR is the event movie to beat in 2009. Michael Bay and McG’s “my robot is bigger and more realistic” debate is not on Cameron’s radar screen.

Discuss: Let us know what you think about Cameron’s statement in the comments. And if there is a film you’re looking forward to more this year, explain.

  • Does anyone know where or when the trailer will be released?
  • Stang68
I am really excited...err, at least I think I am. I cant really tell yet! lol
  • I'm betting with X-Men Origins: Wolverine on May 1st, its a big Fox movie, its a franchise movie that'll open pretty big, its the starter of the summer season, it makes perfect sense to put the Avatar trailer with it
  • Ben
I'll be excited when I actually have something to be excited about. Has there ever been a movie that has had more hype than this before pretty much anything had been shown?
  • mememememe
    Matrix Reloaded
  • the prequels, obviously. and george lucas similarly played up the technology over the story far ahead of time (not to mention, cough, the end result), but cameron is a far better director. you can't discount avatar due to its sheer ambition and the director's previous accomplishments; there simply isn't an equal to it this year or perhaps ever: cameron is attempting to redefine moviegoing and the experience of watching a film. he's been quite open about this and the technology he's utilizing---and in many instances creating---to accomplish such a feat. this is the definitive event film for these reasons. i understand the requests for jpegs or footage, but personally i don't think they're needed.
  • Ben
Not trying to discount it by any means, just saying there are other movies I'm for excited about for now. That may very well change when I see/hear more (and given his track record, there is a good chance at it.).

I guess I would be more excited about the technology if I knew exactly what to expect from it. Certainly he doesn't have to release anything, but until he does I can't say I'm going to get too excited over it, other than just being hopeful.
  • you're right Ben! Cameron hasn't given us a single reason to be excited about this movie...unless we see a trailer that impresses....he hasn't even released concept artwork...it's just a movie he needs to get over himself
  • Spence_Mgence
Actually there has been concept art released and if you go to "Google" and type in "Avatar Concept Art" a few neat pictures will pop up. Let's look at the glass as half-full, guys!
  • Fox and Cameron have pulled any concept artwork off movie blogs and websites...a majority of it was fan made or not official...there really hasn't been a single piece of official artwork released...
  • Spence_Mgence
ahh missed that. I still have a feeling that those pictures will be very similar to what we end up seeing in the movie. I still think it will be amazing. The only thing I am worried about is the fact that Fox is distributing it.
  • Fox doesn't exactly invoke confidence but apparently they left Cameron alone...
  • evilnik
Cameroon would've terminated Tom Rothman's ass and got him tied to the titanic debris :)
  • Ben
I suppose, but at least we knew the basic premise and characters of the story. I'm thinking cloverfield after the first teaser came out and it didn't even have a title yet.

Until there is actually a trailer, a synopsis, or some production photos (that actually show something) I'm not too excited. Sure it's Cameron, but I need something.
  • evilnik
cloverfield is overrated. period. its not like second coming of christ or something like that the way it was hyped.
  • i hate hype. it has ruined so many movies for me. rarely has a flick (besides TDK) lived up to it.
  • is this movie supposed to be dark or for kids and all?
  • kronos
I have faith in James Cameron. This movie will be fantastic.
  • zig83
They have my ticket that's for sure. And I've been waiting for god-awful ages for this film. But yeah, the comments above do have a point.

No trailer. No footage. No fanbase. With a late 2009 release? I find myself a bit queasy about buying into a hype machine that doesn't - by any literal means - have any hype.

Heck, in retrospect, I don't even understand the premise.
  • mememememe
i just hope that when we do finally get a trailer that it won't be followed by a dozen clips from the movie or "the first x minutes of AVATAR". It just ruins everything by showing the best parts.
  • I would consider the staggering number of Terminator, Aliens and Titanic fans to be a pretty strong fan base.
  • well the first two are franchises which this isn't....and Titanic wasn't science fiction which generally isn't a favorite genre for female movie goers...Titanic gained a massive following with women and is the reason why it made so much money... trust me the fan base for Cameron is smaller than you think...he hasn't made a science fiction film since 1991...and he hasn't had his named attached to a successful film since 97....so I'm a little reluctant to give in to this massive hype...along with the gimmick of 3D being it's apparent big selling point..considering the target audience is 13 year olds who have never actually been in a theater to watch his films when they were first released...
  • Yes, but he envisioned the Terminator franchise.,,,I will agree with you Titanic was extremely successful with women and, though they are not the target audience for this picture, they still helped make Titanic the most successful picture of all time. I do not doubt for a second that they will market this as "from the director of titanic". Besides, since 1997 he has directed two 3-D movies that were visually spectacular proving that he can make classy 3-D films. So, yes you are right, while the 3-D "gimmick" may be the drawing point for many fans, women or 13 year olds (many of whom I am sure have rented Cameron flicks) there aren't many reasons to doubt that he has spent the last twelve years on something worth getting hyped about.
  • I'm not trying to deflate the quality of Cameron's previous films but without anything to base my excitement on for this film...I can't really blindly jump on the Avatar bandwagon without seeing a trailer...as it may be a negative outlook I'm just angry with the marketing campaign rather than Cameron himself...
  • Not trying to deflate?

"Cameron is full of hot air these days..."

    LOL.

Hopefully there will be a trailer soon.
  • I'm sure we'll be seeing the trailer attached to Monsters Vs Aliens...it was mentioned a while back...although the sooner the better
  • Not too far away. Here's hoping.
  • So much hype about this moive, hope it will be worth it.
  • Rob Frenay
Man, I'm barely even excited for this thing. Granted, I've only seen a couple Cameron movies but both were destroyed for me, presumably by overhype, and this one seems to be following suit.

Ask me to name a movie I'm looking forward to more? God, where to start. Malick's "Tree of Life" is probably at the top of my list; I'll sit through that in an IMAX theater a dozen times before I'll even consider giving Cameron my ticket money. "The Road", "Doctor Parnassus", hell, I'm even more excited for "Terminator", "Harry Potter", and "Up".

Cameron has a lot to do to convince me that this will live up to even a quarter of the hype. Consider me a skeptic.
  • jacob
have you seen anything from tree of life either? but its art film so its cooler than avatar? the harry potter movies are all the same. how is it "hype" if he's talking about details like a character's tail and 3-D tech? and there would be no terminator salvation without him. idiot.
  • Rob Frenay
Perhaps I didn't explain myself well enough. No, I have not seen anything from Tree of Life, but as I would consider Cameron a highly overrated director and Malick a highly kickass one, I am far more excited for Malick's film. Art film or blockbuster, that doesn't even enter the equation. I also wasn't specifically referring to the Cameron quote as adding to the hype, but rather the generally insane amount of hype that surrounds this film. As one of the few overrated Cameron films that I've seen was "The Terminator", I'm well aware that McG's film is a continuation of said franchise. However, despite it being a McG film, I am more interested in that film than I am in Avatar. Granted, I have not seen much outside of production stills and artwork, but nothing I've seen or heard has made me the least bit excited. This is called an opinion. Deal with it.

    ...idiot.

I love Cameron's Aliens and Terminator saga's but he does have a Titanic ego. It makes me laugh, when I see him in upcoming photos from his films. Ah Jim, we know your the director, can we get a wideshot of the set or something?,
  • They have given us absolutely no reason to be excited. It's hype, that's it. "It's going to be super awesome amazing 3D ZOMG!!". Yeah, ok, sure. How about you actually *show* people something that isn't Cameron in front of a generic-looking set, then we'll see about how "revolutionary" this film is supposed to be.

"And if there is a film you’re looking forward to more this year, explain."

Plenty of them I'm looking forward to more. Up, Star Trek, Terminator, even 9. At least we've seen what they espouse.
  • freemachine
Cameron revolutionizes cinematic SFX with every movie that he makes: water tentacle and absolute clarity of underwater shots in The Abyss, the liquid metal terminator (T2), and the enormous water tank in Mexico used to sink the Titanic (and was also used in Master and Commander).

At least on a visual level, this movie will blow away anything we've ever seen or contemplated that could be done in a movie.
  • right on. who needs hype when you have a ground breaker at the head of this project.
  • This movie need a trailer ASAP.
  • it's needed a trailer since Christmas...they're taking too long to release at least a teaser...
  • Note how he didn't deny the news about the 12-minute first person chase.
  • I mean, this isn't exactly my most anticipated movie in terms of story or anything.

But it is HIGHLY anticipated in terms of what it is going to do to the film industry, if anything.
  • Jason
I'm not really to worried about it. I remember all the bad press and rumors surrounding TITANIC when it came out. Regardless of if I think the movie sucked or not it did pull in a billion dollars.

I don't see any reason why this movie won't make a shit ton of money and probably see the way we look at movies. Much like T2 and the Abyss did. Can't fucking wait for it.
  • Cameron is full of hot air these days...you'd think he'd be spending more time promoting his film instead of spreading cryptic messages ...and sending out so called stills that are just showing himself...Titanic has really given him an ego...if Avatar tanks it's going to be because of his reluctance to market this movie to a public who hasn't seen Cameron do a feature film in 12 years...considering this movie is original and has no fan base to support it...
  • This could either be a huge experiment doing great things or a complete bust like most other movies. I'm sure there is truth behind it, but he does a good job spinning it, and either way, we will see the movie regardless of issues.
  • Django
He's wearing an Alita, Battle Angel shirt.

Preview of things to come, perhaps? (We know he already has the rights to it)

I'm sorry, but Sam Worthington just strikes me as the plainest of plain-Jane actors. Hopefully I'm wrong about that, but he looks like a guy who steps into the bar and orders a glass of milk, dunnhe?
  • I've enjoyed most of Cameron's films and I don't think he'll disappoint with 'Avatar', but I'm looking forward to 'Terminator' and 'Transformers' more...of course we really haven't seen anything solid yet from 'Avatar' yet, so until we see a trailer or something I really can't get hyped up for 'Avatar'...
  • Tronbarn
I am one for the hype and I'm easily suckered in; especially if it's of filmmakers of Cameron's stature. But my excitement is beginning to turn into frustration because we don't have anything to go on. But, I along with maybe 12 geeks out there that have read the original treatment that Cameron wrote like 10 years ago when internet hype on movies really first started, can't get that story and it's promised imagery out of my mind. Here's why I'm confident the hype is justified and that we will see some truly groundbreaking stuff: At the time when I read the treatment about a crippled marine who gets the chance to take the place of his dead brother on an alien world as a powerful alien creature who saves the planet, there really wasn't anything particularly groundbreaking as far as visual fx. Well, yes, we had Titanic and Episode One, but it wasn't really until the first Rings movie that we all went - 'holy s...t!'. And then Two Towers and Return and then all the up to King Kong in 2005. Yes, there was a lot of great fx stuff in between as well like the Superhero films, but by then it was all expected because we had jumped over that bar with Titanic, Star Wars, and the Rings and Kong. But what Cameron wrote in that treatment even after I had seen Episode One and then not long after the first Spider-man, I wasn't too disappointed that we wouldn't see it any time soon because I didn't think that that level of visual fx could be achieved. It wasn't until around Two Towers that I realized that there was a possibility that Avatar could be done without costing 500mil to produce. It's been stated several times that it's the only reason he waited because the tech had not caught up to the story. So now here we are in 09, they've been working on the film since 06 or earlier, AND we have WETA doing the fx!!! But to me the kicker is not the technology but the fact that we're getting it from JC, who brought us the films we all know and love (most of us) and to me has set the bar for the rest of not just fx but story telling (for this type of film) as well. I mean, very few directors combine the level of intimate detail to character and story within a popcorn blockbuster. Very few. Peter Jackson and Zemeckis and JJ Abrams come to mind, but even Speilberg has lost some of his magic on this type of film - ie War of the Worlds. And maybe you can put Michael Bay in there. But take any mediocre or solid summer popcorn flick of the past 5 years and ask yourself what if it had been directed by Cameron? Then let all the possibilities run through your head of a JC War or the Worlds, or a JC Transformers. So, yes, when he takes his time to come out with a film - you know he's not coming out with the standard bs we're used to. Same thing with Terrence Malick; he's not just coming out with your standard stuff. And yes he can be arrogant and he was arrogant way before Titanic. But then again Michael Bay is very arrogant as well and I think you almost have to be to steer big projects where you know they need to go. So, yes I'm excited but I can understand the frustration because they need to have something out. But it is coming and that right soon.
  • A picture a trailer anything for me to believe this project is worth my time.
