New Star Trek Movie Trailer - What Do You Think?

star trek bridge

Paramount Pictures has released the new trailer for JJ AbramsStar Trek. We get to learn about James Kirk’s father, and the film’s real story — how he becomes the captain of the Enterprise. I’m not sure about you guys, but when I watched this trailer when they premiered it at WonderCon, you could feel the geek excitement as Pine sits down in the captains chair for the first time. I’m actually surprised at some of the plot points that the trailer ruins, for instance, the planet that implodes into itself. And the space battle between Nero’s ship and the Enterprise looks both epic and insane. And how about Michael Giacchino’s awesome score?! Watch the trailer after the jump, and tell me what you think in the comments below.

One grew up in the cornfields of Iowa, fighting for his independence, for a way out of a life that promised only indifference, aimlessness, and obscurity. The other grew up on the jagged cliffs of the harsh Vulcan desert, fighting for acceptance, for a way to reconcile the logic he was taught with the emotions he felt.In the far reaches of the galaxy, a machine of war bursts into existence in a place and time it was never meant to be. On a mission of retribution of the destruction of his planet, its half-mad captain seeks the death of every intelligent being, and the annihilation of every civilized world. Kirk and Spock, two completely different and unyielding personalities, must find a way to lead the only crew, aboard the only ship, that can stop him.

You can watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. Star Trek hits theaters on May 8th 2009.

  • Loved it! Any doubts I had about this movie are now gone.
  • maverick
    holy snikies
  • mamba
    sick!
  • Robbie Clark
    That is RIDICULOUS!
  • I think it looks fantastic. And this is coming from a hardcore Trekkie. I'll be there in TOS blues at midnight!
  • Eric R.
Didn't know they still made those uniforms. That would be really interesting to see.
  • Yeah. I have a yellow captains shirt. They're not that hard to find actually.
  • Mr.Curtis
Did I see Elisha Cuthbert as Kirk's mother in a flash back?
  • Lencho
I'm not a fan of Star Trek. I did catch a few episodes of the show back in the 90s here and there. I've never been this is excited for a Star Trek film or show with the great trailers they've been putting out.
  • I have always been Star Wars all the way in the eternal geek Wars/Trek debate....but goddamn I cannot wait to see this
  • It's Jennifer Morrison from House, actually.
  • Looking pretty good (coming from someone who has never seen anything Star Trek at all). Music was pretty damn awesome.
  • The music, or tones, sounded a lot like the Dark Knight, it really seemed to have the same music/score type, which is great :)
  • Keyser Soze
I just saw this and thought the same EXACT thing
  • vva
I hope an HD version of this trailer is released soon.

So what happens to Capt. Pike? Is Abrams doing away with Pike's history (i.e. The Menagerie and the Green Woman)? I know it's a reboot, but I'd still like to see Pike in that wheelchair device, blinking lights for yes and no.
  • Bruce Greenwood is Captain Pike. Ya know, the guy who's talking to Kirk at the beginning?
  • Looks great. Really excited for the release.
  • jobless
    looks bad ace.
  • one word:

    epic.
  • Farrrr
    is that the actual score?

Sounds like it was lifted almost note for note from Batman Begins
  • Weyland_Yutani
i can hear some of that, for sure. I also hear a hint of Basil Poledouris' score from Starship Troopers (Klendathu Drop). However, it does sound like it has taken those ideas and pushed them a little. If that is, in fact, the Giacchino score, I'm all for it.
  • Exactly my thoughts. Anyway, this trailer is amazing.
  • kobecablemaker
I thought it was a remix version of Zimmer's The Last Samurai. Great score BTW.
  • Kyle
It wasn't the actual score from Giacchino. It was Two Steps from Hell who does lots of trailer cues. I wish I could get their albums.
  • I'll spend 10 bucks on that.
  • huh?
You guys are posting like the 28th trailer for this yet have completely overlooked the fact that the trailer for Limits of Control has been up since this morning. For shame!
  • clarence somerset
Looks epic! The music does sound like TDK's, with the horns, but its a good score for a character-driven sci-fi pic: gives the trailer a very epic feel, and the role of Kirk in the greater scheme of things
  • Wow that was a nice trailer. This movie is going to be awesome. I'm not even a Star Trek fan and I'm going to watch this movie and like it.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I'm a science fiction geek, but I've never been very interested in anything Star Trek. All I can say about this is.... "holy shit." 10 G's of jaw-dropped cool.

This looks like the grand scale space opera that nobody has touched in years. It's about time. If this lives up to this trailer's promise, the next decade of sci-fi is looking up. Way up.
  • Mecline
Not that I needed another reason to go see it on Opening night, but this surely doesn't hurt.
  • Looks great, but why Abrams has to show babies in everything he does? In every fucking movie or TV show a sweating and screaming woman is giving birth, jeez... o.0
  • Not really a trek fan - I liked TNG but not the original series. I haven't really liked any of the Trek movies. This trailer has got me more interested though! Abrams has got balls, got to respect it.
  • freemachine
I know that Greenwood is playing Pike in the movie. My question, which I probably didn't make entirely clear, was what happens to Pike in the movie. Something happens to him in order for Kirk to take his seat on the bridge. The event will obviously be different from the TV series, where he was imprisoned and ultimately crippled. I'm just wondering if Greenwood is captured, killed, incapacitated, etc.

I know, I have to wait for the film, but I'm friggin dying here! I just need a taste...just a taste!
  • Brice Gilbert
Well this is an alternate time line correct? Time travel screws something up? "James T Kirk was a great man, but that was another life".
  • Eric R.
Yea I noticed that comment as well. I perked my ears when I heard it. I wonder if JJ is going for a different time version than the original series, TNG, etc. and showing us a different plane in which Kirk and crew go on a different missions etc. Could make for interesting sequels.
  • UH WOW.

    WOW.

    WOW.

    WOW.

Sorry for such a lame comment, but holy SHIT.
  • holy crap holy crap holy crap. geek-jizzed-in-my-pants.
  • This movie truly looks amazing. I've never seen all the episodes of the original Star Trek series but appreciated the shows courage for tackling interesting and sometimes even thought provoking situations. I'm definitely watching this film in theaters.
  • this makes me excited to pop my Trek cherry.
  • speechless. awesome.
  • I agree with which ever blogger said this: This IS going to out Star Wars Star Wars
  • rich
i cant wait for this at all. sulu doing some sort of spinning kick on the drill....WTF!!! who cares....AMAZING
  • ddddduuuuuuudddeeee that looks badass......so excited for this and I'm not even a big trek fan
  • agreed, i think i've caught maybe some of "Wrath of Kahn" on tv somewhere, but i've never seen one of the films all the way through. but this looks fantastic.
  • jimbo
i hate star trek but i cannot wait for this movie to come out!
  • I'm with you, Daft. I will be popping my Trek cherry also. Looks decent enough, although hopefully the cliche's that are riddled throughout the trailer don't come through as blatantly obvious during the film.
  • I can't believe how much they revealed. Can't wait!!
  • All that action, explosions and fighting. All those one liners full of impact. All that talk of making the right choices, capabilities, destiny, paths and determination... and they still find time to squeeze in a saucy shot from the sex scene that they know doesn't belong but they insist on including anyway. *Sigh*
  • rich
have faith! they have to sell to the masses while keeping the fans happy. not an easy task but i think (hope) they did are doing a good job...no no no great job. that is a great looking trailer. i hope they dont ruin it because that would be a shame
