The last full throttle attempt to mount a live-action Mad Max IV stalled in 2003. Pretty much every year since then Mel Gibson has done something - either professionally or, not to put too fine a point on it, unprofessionally - to convince me the film would never get made. Turns out I was wrong. George Miller has plans to get the film underway again, and this time he won’t be inviting the star of the initial trilogy along for the thrill ride.

Speaking to MTV, Miller has revealed parallel films for an animated Mad Max IV and tie-in video game based on the same basic storyline. The film is to be animated in full-on stereoscopic 3D, and the game is being devised in collaboration with Cory Barlog, game director of God of War 2.

Miller persists in calling the film anime. He’ll definitely be taking inspiration from Japanese toons, but not without mixing things up a bit.

The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change. It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films.

He’s just evoked Kurosawa. Will those shoes prove too big for Mr. Happy Feet to fill?

Miller doesn’t want to even approach Gibson, saying that they’d “probably go a different route” with the casting. A round of applause on that one, I think. I like Signs as much as much more than the next man, but if I never see Gibson in another film ever again, it’ll be too soon.*

Barlog has previously blogged about his collaboration with Miller. Last October he posted about their work on the game’s story and play mechanics:

George and I have put the final touches on the Mad Max story and game design structure and mechanics. My last trip to Sydney in September marked the completion of that stuff. I gotta’ say, and I know I am totally biased here, but I gotta say that this story – as well as this game – is pretty freaking bad ass!! I really can’t wait to get this game out there.

It has been such an incredible ride working so closely with George. I feel like my skills as a storyteller increase exponentially with every meeting we have.  We have so many sensibilities that are similar, yet so many that push each other in directions we would never have thought to go. I am learning so much from him. I feel a lot like Daniel san in Karate Kid 2.

Exciting business.

*In all other respects, I’m really looking forward to Edge of Darkness.

  • I wonder how that would turn out. would it be violent as the others and have a R rating or is this more geared towards childern and young teens?
  • Horrible idea.
  • What a horrible, horrible idea.

And what do you have against Mel Gibson? You sure seem to bash him a lot.
  • am I the only one who think the first Mad Max film is total crap?
  • Spot the Nigel.
  • +1 Max Max is dumb.
  • I agree completely, I watched it with a friend who saw it as a kid and remembered this great film happening - I don't know what the hell that shit was, but it wasn't great in my opinion. Not bad if you're expecting some laughs.
  • Man, this idea sucks
  • Yes.
  • lots of people "hate" Mel Gibson because of his drunken slurs against Jews a while back ago, i guess.
  • That was a long time ago, and who cares if the guy said some stuff that you should only say at the comfort of your home. I Forgave Gibson, well then again i'm Irish not Jewish but hey, someone forgave him.
  • That's only part of it.
  • Picture Happy Feet but with post-apocalyptic characters dancing and singing about rape and murdering using souped-up hot rods.
  • Let it be known that Signs blows.
  • freemachine
Yup, you might be alone on that one.
  • Indeed you are.
  • I liked Signs, but the best M. Night Movie is Unbreakable.
  • Unbreakable is extremely under appreciated. M. Night is a terrible director now though...

I feel like my childhood just got raped in the ass. Horrible idea, Miller. Horrible.
  • Sometime you gotta just let go. This sounds like a horrible idea. And worse, there is NO NEED for it. What purpose will this serve the Mad Max trilogy as we know it today?
  • Hollywood fail.

I'll pay attention when I get a look at the designs and a sniff of the budget. Until then, talk of an animation project is just talk - the difference between something like "9" or "Sky Blue" and a straight to DVD Dead Space: Downfall ( or even Clone Wars).

    In other words, I'm skeptical.
He'd do well to drop some animation names/films as reference. Kurosawa, for all his greatness, isn't really going to resonate with Western animation audiences.

If it's done right, I'll be first in line.

...and as a final note, if this is animated, they really need to think about getting Mel Gibson on board to do the voice acting. We're talking about voice acting for a character that is defined by a man that still has the same voice. I see it as no different than if they decided to animate a Terminator film and decided that they didn't want Arnold's voice. Fail.
  • it really is unnecessary. it's probably going to turn out like crap, if it indeed gets made.
  • I don't know about this at all...doesn't seem right to me.
  • This idea sounds great! And by great I mean absolute shite.
  • Well said.
  • Yeah, its not the greatest movie ever made. The Road Warrior is the best in the series.
  • Chris
    Eh.
  • Lpfanaddy
George Miller and Robert Zemeckis should just have a motion capture love child.
  • freemachine
I've seen some stupid ideas posted on /film, like a Spielberg/Smith remake of Oldboy, but this one takes the cake.
  • The Chief
    wow, what a terrible idea.

I still think if you really need to bring Mad Max back, you can't go wrong with Thomas Jane.
  • Mag
    Noooooo - Darth Vader
  • I was really looking forward to it!
    Now I'm not...:'(
  • twilightsection
Miller is an idiot. Max aint Max without Mel simple as that. This is a terrible idea. I would really like to see Gibson reprise his role for a live action movie. Would be fascinating to see an older Max and that world 25 years later..
  • mel has definately fallen off but seriously....william f-cking wallace!?!? APOCALYPTO!? dude is crazy and an asshole but both braveheart and apocalypto where both incredible films....and does no one want to see "The Colonel" get made?
  • Dogmeat
If the videogame is somewhat as good as Fallout 3 and the 3D films keeps up in maturity and seriousness, I will give it a try
  • wow - disappointing. what a lousy way to start a friday.
  • No thanks.
  • Chris
Terrible Idea. Anime Max Rockatansky? I think not.
    Mel should star AND direct.
  • 12 gauge
My first response was- dear God why? So tired of CGI, and to do it to one of my all time favorites. So sad. I do look forward to a video game however. I will be more willing to accept the film if he pulls through with a live action version. Maybe this crap is just to build up the steam needed to turn the Mad Max series back into something investors will just be drooling over, thus enabling live action. Mad Max is a live action film, and has so much potential left to be explored.
