ghostbusters proton pack

All the talk of a new Ghostbusters movie has me thinking of the cheesy Ghostbusters toys from my childhood. And then I came across this television commercial for Kenner’s Real Ghostbusters Proton Pack (via: wdrussell), which you can watch after the jump.

I’ve also included a 7-minute compilation of other Ghostbusters toys:

  • Holy shit. HOLY SHIT! I had the Proton Pack, the PKE Meter, and the Trap when I was younger! OH MAN. Thank you so much for this post.
  • I didn't have any of it... the sad thing is, I remember every single commercial. What a great marketing technique.
  • jmascia
I definetely had the proon pack and the Venkman toys. These commercials were great, but why was the plan always to run away? In any case, all of this Ghostbusters 3 news has me excited for the game (although I probably won't purchase it), and the new movie moving ahead. This is really the first time that a remake could really spoil something special from my childhood (I wasn't old enough to experience Indy in the theaters), I really hope they do this thing the right way and it's not just a money grab.
  • Fir3Wolf
Wow does that bring me back lol. I remember running around all decked out in the gear, good times.
  • Infrafan
Man, I wanted the proton pack, but I can't complain. I had a lot of those action figures and that firehouse. I can even remember what that ectoplasm smelled like. So many memories.
  • Craig Howlett-Wright
My parents must have spent so much money on me as a kid. I had almost all that shiz
  • Fool4life
Seeing that picture of a proton pack just bring back so many memories! Running around in character with ur friends, having the time of your life. Great nostalgia, awesome post!

  • I totally forgot I had one of the Ghostbusters dolls that you squeeze and their eyes pop out until I JUST watched this! Thanks for postic. Nostalgic flashbacks - there's nothing like em!

  • Talk about nostalgic!! I used to have two of these, I remember I brought one to school one day, all dressed in my full uniform and some rather large and hefty kid stepped on the ghost-catcher and it snapped in two.

If only the catcher could catch the Marshmallow Man, I'd still have it today....
  • i feel six again :)
    i want my toys back!
  • hahaha I was such a Ghostbusters addict as a little kid...I had a lot of those toys growing up and they weren't cheap..lol
  • jamz

I remember having all those toys. Even the fire house, car and some of the characters. Not long ago I was remembering my memories of my Stay Puft Marshmallow man. Still wish I had him to leave around the house. Those were good times.
  • god, I really miss my childhood in the 80s.
  • My childhood went through the early 90's and this is still relevant!
Almost makes me sad... but happy; memories I would have otherwise forgotten have been saved by YouTube, thanks YouTube!
  • oh my god. I remember some of these commercials! thanks for bringing back my wonderful memories... I <3 Slash Film!
  • A buddy of mine got this off eBay last year.. I think he Framed the whole set!
  • marz
it's funny they had to add the word 'real' to the cartoon version of the ghost busters because of the 'other' cartoon version..you remember, the one with the gorilla. lmao!! ah those were the days.
  • Brian Hoffman
I still have my set in the basement... Halloween, here I come!
  • Django
We used to make proton packs out of cardboard tubes, flashlights & backpacks until those things came out.

I used to have the freakout Venkman toy, and I DEF had the Stay Puft figure (I think my nephew plays w/ it now).

The kid imitating Janine must've turned out alright as an adult - Im SURE ;D
  • Wow. Awesome. I used to have a few of those. My favorite GB toy though, was the "bike bell" which was like a siren for your bike handle, and I think came in Happy Meals.
  • Palmer
Hmmmm, I had the Extreme Ghostbusters proton pack if that counts for anything.
  • I had every single item in that picture and used to play with it all the time. I loved tit.
  • I totally had the proton pack as a kid.
  • Adam
As a kid I had the proton pack and EKG meter. One day i left the proton pack in my parents van and the van was stolen. Some time later the cops found our van and it was returned to us, however the proton pack was nowhere to be found. Oneo f the most devastating events of my childhood.
  • Haha! I had one of those when I was a kid, too.
  • Ah nostalgia. These were so awesome back in the day. I'm totally going as Ghostbusters this year for Halloween.

...now if I could only find my old proton pack...
  • I had everything pictured. My favorite was the ghost trap - the mechanics of it were so cool to me, that you could press the peddle and open the trap across the room. That's the kind of nerd I was. This makes me want to be a kid again.
  • Anthony
    Marsmallow ghosts...Fruit flavored oats!
  • Ahh! We had almost all those toys....

I remember once when my little brother lost at monopoly junior and he put on his proton pack and told me and my mom he was running away to new york to join the ghost busters (he was 5ish...) then he got down to the end of the road and came back becuase he could not cross the street by himself... hahha. good times.
  • TheMarquis
Is that a Triforce on the proton pack!? I loved Zelda AND Ghostbusters and i never noticed! <geekoverload>
  • 80's toys so rocked.
  • sean
i dunno that looks kinda phallic to me
  • Talk about nostalgic!! I used to have two of these, I remember I brought one to school one day, all dressed in my full uniform and some rather large and hefty kid stepped on the ghost-catcher and it snapped in two.
  • Juansmith
    I had one of these.

    Awesome.
  • Goatbuster
you had a "proon pack"? my grandpa had one of those...
  • i had a proton pack as a kid also. i don't remember much about it, except that there was a chamber where you could load it with water....probably to use it as a squirt gun.
  • Paul
Why is there a triforce on that proton pack?
  • My first question is; why didn't I have any of that as a child? And my second question is; Can you still buy one of those proton packs anywhere? For a young cousin ofcourse...
  • I still have mine. And it works too!

    lol
  • Nick H
Holy shit, I can't believe I had like 85% of that stuff, man, what a blast!
  • fatguy
Man, I always wanted that proton pack! But looking back, it was probably the cheesiest looking toy ever.

Honestly, it's sad to see that most of what I loved toy-wise and all was nothing more than the product of mass-marketing.

    Sad.
