Daft Punk Scoring the New Tron

electroma

The confirmation comes from Upcoming Film Scores and the Disney folk they checked it out with: Daft Punk have signed on to write the score to Joseph Kosinski’s new Tron movie – Tron, Tron 2.0, Tr2n, 2ron or whatever the heck it ends up being called. May I suggest Trons? Jeez. It’s gonna get a bad name no matter what.

Officially, this is Daft Punk’s first full score. This strikes my skeptical side as a little odd seeing as they starred in, directed, edited, wrote and shot Electroma. The score for that film is credited to one Stephen Baker though I’m more than a little doubtful about his existence. I wouldn’t be too surprised if Baker turns out to be a Roderick Jaynes style fabrication. Should you be reading this, Mr. Baker, please do get in touch. I’d hate to be denying credit where it’s actually due.

I’ve used a still from Electroma at the head of the post. The crash-helmeted characters you see are a pair of robots played by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the members of Daft Punk. One prolonged sequence of the film sees them with human faces made of latex fitted over these shiny cyberheads. As if that isn’t disturbing enough – and it actually is, I had to watch through my fingers – there’s a truly disturbing bit where the latex melts. Shudder. Nightmares are made by Electroma - and I guess that’s a strong recommendation.

Any band with the music video back catalogue of Daft Punk must have done something right, even if that’s just signing to a label with a whip smart video commissioner. Amongst their compendium of mini-gems are Spike Jonze’ Da Funk, Michel Gondry’s Around the World, Leiji Matsumoto’s anime suite for Interstellar 555, Roman Copolla’s Revolution 909 and The YouTube Community’s collective efforts at writing on themselves and learning complex choreography.

The only way I’d feel Daft Punk were a neater, more seemingly fated appointment for the Tron gig would be if Kraftwerk had scored the original instalment. As it were, the amazing sounds the first time around were provided by Wendy Carlos who simply doesn’t have a modern day analog (pun intended).

  • I think this could be incredibly awesome.
  • I am pretty stoked. Tron and Daft Punk seems like a good mesh in my opinion.
  • Soundtrack is a must buy.
  • Work it, make it, do it, makes us. Harder, better, faster, stronger. Work it harder, make it better, do it!

The Robotic Fathers of Modern Parisian House Music ... can do no wrong in my heart

This just made TR2N THAT MUCH BLOODY COOLER
  • I love Daft Punk's music and I friggin' love their helmets.
  • skippy
yeah, their helmets look more "Cobra Commander" than what will end up in the G.I. Joe movie
  • ungabunga
Still hope there's a place for Wendy Carlos' theme in this, it's still iconic. I remember they were dropping Lisberger's name a while back, I wonder if he's still involved with the production in any capacity.
  • shadow
Daft punk are expert samples, I'm sure it will pop up more than once.
  • andrew aiello
this news made my day(when I read it a couple hours ago), but yeah alive 97 is the live disc that inspired my entire pitiful music career(which sort of continues today). Daft punk are my heroes and I think they will knock this out of the park.
  • Thomas Bangalter, the one on the left, scored the French film Irreversible, starring Monica Belluci and Vincent Cassel. Aside from being a really good film, the score is also fantastic, so it's not their first endeavor into film scores.
  • Vadim K
It wasnt actually them who starred in Electroma.
And dont forget about Interstella 5555
  • yeahh i love the discovery album.
  • They've been lying in interviews then.
  • adam jackson
    Wow. I'm super excited!
  • I can dig that.
  • I wonder who they're going to sample?
  • luke_test
i could listen to technologic all dayy long
  • now i know that if the movie sucks, i could still be entertained by DAFT PUNK,
hell yes best news of the day other than today's wednesday which means a brand new episode of LOST!!!

brandon, why skeptic DAFT PUNK is always been about making epic music, listen to DAFT PUNK 2007 that is most amazing album experience and i went to their concert. it's by far the most epic thing you'll ever hear. just imagine the possibilities with this project.
  • alive 2007 was amazing. which location did you attend?
  • phil
for me it was at keyspan park brooklyn i think june of 07. THE best concert experience of my life...they are soo epic, they spawned a generation of french electronic music and are definately the godfathers of french house. The score to irreversible is very good.
  • oh man Daft Punk 2007 in Brooklyn, such a good memory for me too .... Face to Face / Short Circuit mix they and Television Rules The Nation / Around the World mix were so bloody mind blowing it was amazing to see them work the board and do that right there
  • Dragon17
Hell Yea . Attended the Coachella Performance and Los Angeles. - I need more
  • dude i went to the one where they recorded it at down at bercy and it was so awesome. what i really want see/hear is some sort of daft punk/justice collaboration it would unbelievable.
  • That collaboration would be mindbogglingly epic.

I had always liked the Daft Punk but only fully rediscovered them after they just finished the Alive tour... still pissed about it. The Alive album has to be one of my favorite albums of all time.
  • Hmm looks like I'll be buying the soundtrack, and skipping the movie ;)
  • dlb
    OH WOW!!!!
  • Love to see what they can come up with! Still iffy bout the movie though.

Daft Punk scoring this? My interest in this film just jumped way up.

The correct name of the Daft Punk anime movie is "Interstella 5555", not "Interstellar 555" as written in the story.
  • 5555 is correct

    the 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem
  • This makes me very very happy. Now I'm really looking forward to Tron. Over the weekend I was driving around with some buddies while listening to Daft Punk, and I said "They really need to make more music." Wish - Granted.

Btw, Kanye West's "Stronger" was only good because of them.
  • seann
fuck yeah, hopefully they promote it with a new tour too... thats just wishful thinking...
  • this is the best news i've ever read on slash film. i'm in bliss
  • Interstella 5555 was mesmerizing Great News!!
  • This has just upped my excitement ever so slightly for this film. The new 'TR2N' may crash and burn (or not), but it'll atleast go out with an awesome soundtrack. Daft Punk are easily one of my favourite bands, and it's safe to say they are also musical geniuses! :D
  • musical pioneers, geniuses, inspiration, euphoria.
  • greycolumbus
One more awesome announcement and I might ejaculate.
  • I am suddenly interested in this film
  • Agreed. This was one of those 'if it's good, I'll see it' movies for me. Definitely not considering opening day - but with a Daft Punk score? That's like $8 for a really long DP music video. I could do that.
  • Daft Punk isss Tron!
  • edc
    cooltastic.
  • shadow
    *samplers
  • Thomas Bangalter did the soundtrack to 'Irreversible' - a soundtrack that made an already uneasy film cross a line into utter tension for the viewer.

I think that they will masterfully put together whatever sounds the creators of the film envision, and the soundtrack will be on the same level as 'There will be blood' in terms of its integration with the film.
  • debadeeb2001
i think i just got an orgasm!
  • HOWARDMARKS
I've had the pleasure of working for Daft Arts, Guy and Thomas' production company located over at the Jim Henson Studios here in Los Angeles.

Never once have they stated they starred in Electroma. Period. If they had, don't you think their name would've been listed in the credits, and everywhere else, listing them as the stars?

Reread those interviews. Hell, do a little fact checking next time.

"They've been lying in interviews then..." What are you twelve? No wonder FilmIck went under. Remain in obscurity, Brendon.
  • drsiebling
Oh come on! Why not more from Wendy? She's still around and is as fantastic a musician and composer as anyone who has ever scored a film. Good call, Trons, drop a former Kubrick collaborator in favor of a trendy and repetitive French dance band. I hope that this doesn't signal an attempt to be trendy and hip with the new film...
  • Skooter
My interest for Tron 2 went from 0 to 20 from this one post....
    2 words:
    FUCK.
    YEAH.
  • Ezra
Daft Punk is a strange choice. I love the Carlos score. Perhaps a better choice might have been M83. They're also a French techno group, but they've got a better handle on cinematic soundscapes and melodies.
