danny boyle james bond

Update: This story has been debunked by Boyle himself.

The Sun is not really considered a trusted source for information, especially when it comes to gossip (the word “our sources say” is the big tip off). I don’t know why, but somehow we always get hooked by their bullshit. Maybe it’s because some of their claims are just interesting, while other stories we just want to be true. I wish we lived in a world where newspaper’s didn’t print fabricated information, but some do more than others. Basically, I’ve just gone the long way to say, take this rumor with a grain of salt.

The Sun is reporting that Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle is being offered the chance to direct the 23rd James Bond film. Of course, Boyle is probably getting a ton of studio offers after his Academy Award and Golden Globe wins. But according to the UK newspaper/gossip sheet, EON Productions is “leading the chase.” It might be worth noting that Callum McDougall, who produced Boyle’s 200 film The Beach is also an executive producer on the project. So what are the chances this might be true, or that Boyle will end up directing the next Bond film? One would assume that his current situation would allow him a chance at more interesting and original projects.

Discuss: Would you like to see a Danny Boyle-directed James Bond movie?

  • As you said Peter, it's the Sun so you gotta take it with a grain of salt. But I don't know if Boyle would be perfect for this, just as Forster wasn't that great for QOS. To be honest, I'd love to see Alfonso Cauron tackle this...
  • I agree, Alfonso Cuarón would be a great choice.
  • lol. peter, is the image representative of what you think of the prospect of boyle at the helm?
  • Jeff L.
If this is true, then I hope Daniel Craig pulls the trigger.
  • I think Danny Boyle's take on the franchise would be interesting to see.
  • On second thought, forget the grain, here's the whole salt shaker.

I would like to see this though.
  • I'd really like to see it but yes he may have more intersting offers after the Oscar win.
  • I'd love to see this. WITH Daniel Craig.
  • it looks like craig+boyle would be a good combination
  • jason B
dear fucking god NO!!!! there is much more important work to be done, and i feel boyle can best serve this beautiful industry with other projects...

...then again - and most important - i am not danny boyle, nor do i know what he wants. so whatever makes him happy should be his next project.
  • What are you kidding?
    I'd love it!
He was great directing the kinda action film 28 Days Later...
A bond, he could make a masterpiece.
With a good screenplay, he could easily top Casino Royale.
  • I doubt he will agree to do it. Boyle likes creative freedom and such big franchise, with certain commercial expectations as 007, will not be able to give it to him. But it could be nice to see such film.
  • Just get Martin Campbell back. He's proven he's the only person who can make a decent Bond film.
  • I cant picture how this would turn out. Not so sure if this is Boyle's right movie.
  • Billy
The Sun cannot be trusted on anything, it's a cheap gossipy tabloid rag.
  • Get Martin Campbel back to finish off the trilogy!!

I am more worried about daniel craig contracted into a fourth film! If sources are saying the third film will tie in with dr no and the bond that we all know and love! then i think daniel craig should do his job then leave after Bond 23!

Dont kid me wrong i am a great fan of daniel craig as james bond! just it wont feel right, as we all know craig as the rough n tough james bond rather than the suave bond. for it to connect into Dr No, they should either make it into a tetralogy rather than a trology plus another daniel craig film
  • nice Bond-ology. you're completely right.
  • danny boyle came to speak at my university shortly after filming slumdog and explicitly said he has no interest in making a film that is part of a franchise (having been offered projects of the kind before), which he noted as being ironic because he inadvertently spawned one with 28 Days Later...

so i doubt this'll happen but it'd be nice!
  • It's OK to inadvertently spawn a franchise and walk away, I'd think. At least then you're the reason it exists, and not the reason lesser sequels are stinking up screens.
  • cib3k
Oh, god, please no. I hope he continues to make original movies and not Bond / Potter / Batman sequels or anything like that.
  • yeah, i think so too. and he didn't say he was unhappy with it being a franchise, and he sad he was happy with the job they'd done.

i think it's probably more the fact that franchises tend to have scripts that don't appeal to him, they're very much films that have to conform, obviously he didn't have to do that with 28 days because it was never intended as a first installment of something bigger, but he most certainly would with bond and the like
  • Boyle has a great visual style and with movies like 28 Days Later and Sunshine, we know he can deliver on action + drama in the same package. So he'd be a great choice. Also, if the Bond producers want to continue on the vein they're following with Casino and Quantum of making a tougher, leaner Bond, I'm sure Boyle could bring something new to the table.

That said, he really doesn't strike me as someone motivated by big franchise bucks. So far none of his movies have been mega-budgets/high-expectation events. How's he going to go from $10-30 million indies to a $150+ tentpole?
  • Well, whatever he does, I'll be seeing in the theatres as soon as possible. He said he really wanted to do a musical. After I got over the initial "wtf" moment, I could see how that would be interesting to watch. Whatever, I'll watch anything Danny Boyle.

    P.S.
Why did you make it look like Bond is shooting Boyle in the head?
  • DON'T DO IT, DANNY BOYLE YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS!!!!
  • How is a director "too good" for a project? Imagine if we had that attitude when Nolan took the helm on Batman. He is a great director that has proved he can tackle any genre. I would love for Boyle to do a Bond film and I think he would be fantastic doing so.
  • bond is better
he would be lucky to do a Bond film!
  • I would love to see this, Boyle and Craig would make an interesting Bond together, but like some of the people here I hope they do put the pieces together and get Martin Campbell back to do the third one...
  • I Got Hurt Feelins.
I could see him doing the follow-up to Casino Royale, but after Quantum of Solace sucked it up I don't think the reboot was as successful as we all thought.

Even so I think all of us are pretty tired with the Bond schtick. It would be interesting to see something from a more creative director.

Boyle is one of the most versatile directors around. He's done a pic on addiction, a horror pic, sci-fi, comedy, and now a Bollywood drama. The man can do anything, and if 28 Days Later is anything to go by, he's good with action set pieces.
  • just cause he can do anything though, doesn't mean he should do everything.

    i'm on the fence personally.
  • Sean
In recent interviews...Boyle has said he's not very good with big budgets...so i doubt he all of a sudden jumps on Bond. And honeslty, i'd hate to see his talents wasted on a franchise film...do something original PLEASE.
  • Palmer
I enjoy the work of Danny Boyle (Aside from Slumdog), but I enjoy that picture more than I should.
  • Question: Would you like to see a Danny Boyle-directed James Bond movie?

    Answer: No.
  • Matt
    Oh ye of little faith!
  • Blake
I interviewed Boyle for my paper last November, and when I asked what he'd like to do next in his career, I gave him this hypothetical question: Would you rather do a Harry Potter/James Bond type film, or another small project.

He scoffed at the notion of a big flick, saying he'd never like to do something like "The Beach" again. He called it something like "an invading army."

But who knows how money or an Oscar could change a fella?

I hope he stays small. It befits his gifts.
  • Branden
I could see it, but he has a lot of work to do to save the series from "Quantum of Solace".
  • If Boyle does Bond it has the potential to improve on "Solace". For those of you who forgot, Boyle also directed "Trainspotting" and that film had plenty of fast action and a great balance of character and plot.
That said, the whole things sounds like a rumor at this stage.
  • But then again, Cuarón is a great choice for anything. If it was possible, I would buy tickets in advance for any movie he decides to be involved with, that's how much faith I have.
  • I think it would be better if he stays on the path he's been going for sometime now. doing different genres, 28 days later, millions, sunshine were all great
  • I can see this going really well or not well at all, it's not really Boyle's forte, doing a movie like Bond. He needs to stay with what he does best and out of the mainstream.
  • Okay, I lol'd at that photo.
  • So I'm guessing he's not working on 28 Months Later?
  • IMDB News: "No Bond for Boyle"
  • Ant
Paul Greengrass-He's already made 2 Bond films :-p
  • Micah
Yeah I agree, Boyle is too good for Bond.
  • Joe
I just read a Slashfilm entry and I JIZZED IN MY PANTS.
  • I agree. If you look at Boyle's body of work, he tends to like doing inde films that are more artistic than commercial. Even if the rumor is true, I don't think he'd take the job. . . . at least based on my perception of the man and the projects he's chosen in the past.
  • Anyone would be an improvement on Marc Forster's heavy-handed effort. That being said, I think Boyle would be a terrific choice.

    From entertainment weekly,

'Slumdog Millionaire' director Danny Boyle is not set to direct the next James Bond movie

Perhaps it was wishful thinking from some die-hard James Bond fans, or maybe Danny Boyle looks really good in a tux. Whatever the reasoning, the rumor that the British Slumdog Millionaire Oscar winner is in line to direct the next Bond movie is not true, EW has learned. "I enjoy the Bond movies, always have and always will, but I have no plans to direct one," Boyle says via e-mail. "I don't know who came up with the story, but please tell them I'm very flattered to be thought of!"
  • Linda
If Danny Boyle direct the next Bond movie.PLEASE put Richard Epcar the actor in it as the next James Bond he will make his dreams come true and my too. Please make him the next James Bond.
