Watchmen Outpacing 300 In Ticket Sales

watchmen street

MovieTickets.com just issued a press release claiming that Watchmen is outpacing 300 in advance ticket sales at 4-to-1 right now. But 300 sold more than 80 percent of its advance tickets on the Wednesday and Thursday prior to its release, so it’s too early for Zack Snyder and crew to celebrate. Also interesting is that IMAX ticket sales currently account for one-third of all ticket sales for Watchmen. This is shocking because only 124 IMAX screens will be showing Watchmen. 300 grossed $70.9 million in its first weekend, and went on to make over $210 million domestically, of which, $20 million was made via 62 domestic IMAX theaters. A couple dozen Thursday midnight shows are already sold out in New York and California.

Also, Fandango held an online poll and found out that 60% of those buying Watchmen tickets online claim to have read the Watchmen graphic novel. Niow keep in mind that Fandango’s sample is probably a low number and not a real indication of the mass audiences. Also, we’re just looking at people who are buying tickets in advance, and not the moviegoers who will show up at the box office this weekend. But the figure could indicate that the film will have a strong drop-off in it’s second week of release, as it appears that the advance interest is coming from people who have read the graphic novel (3 to 2).

The fanboy nature of this project limits interest from many parties. At my school, the half-dozen rabid fanboys I've created by shoving a copy of the book into their hands are pumped to see it (we're thinking IMAX), but the other people I've talked to would probably be around 1/4 wanting to see it, 1/4 ambivalent and 1/2 avoiding it at all costs.

I'm pegging it at around a 60m opening weekend (limited due to length) and a drop-off of 50% in its second weekend. Honestly, I think it'll make back its budget but it won't be a colossal hit. (Plus, consider the R-rating; I think Madea, Chun-Li and Taken might see bumps in sales this weekend as well from underage kids).
  • that's great news. I'm worried the movie is gonna flop badly...
  • You might be right, it's sitting at a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, but all the bad reviews are from the "top critics."
  • manny
uh, im pretty sure there really isnt any interest from "underage kids", let alone anyone, to see Chun-Li......
  • My little brother and his peers of 15-16 year old are all fanatical about this movie, and they aren't really fanboys, just geek-turally aware--and they claim their stance on this movie represents the majority at their high school... So in my experience, I'd say you're wrong; the underage audience is not only a big supporter for this film but, in turn, will probably hurt this film (do to buying tickets for other shit).
  • Good. Because whether or not I like this movie I want it to have a good box office showing.
  • Amen. i hope it beats the shit out of Paul Blart.
  • Yeah, and Jonas Brothers 3D.
  • I think Watchmen is going to hold up stong Peter. I mean movie nerds, like us all, will go see a comic book movie a few times if its awesome. Everyone seems to be saying that Watchmen is a good movie, so I expect it to hold up. Opening- 65 million, total- 225 million
  • I go to college in Indiana (originally from California), and they won't let me frickin pre-order my tickets for the stupid local theater! Boo Indiana!
  • Where in Indiana? I grew up there but now I am in New Mexico for college. If you are in Indiana for college I am guessing you are in Indianapolis or Bloomington...
  • Actually...West Lafayette. Purdue.
  • good luck to your hoops man. you guys can still pull a share of the title if I'm not mistaken.

anything to bring Mich st.'s seed down

Considering this is the best-selling graphic novel of all-time (It even did over a million in 2008), if everyone who read it goes to see it, and then they are 60% of the audience, how many people is that? My guess would be 7-8 million.

I saw the first 20 minutes or so at Wondercon, and I thought "oh that's cool but this is gonna be confusing for some people." I'm guessing it does in the $150-$175M range overall, but it sells like gangbusters as a Blu-Ray Special Edition.
  • saw it last night, pretty epic. still interested to see what mass audiences think about it. I hate spoilers so won't spoil anything, just leave you with - the music rocks.
  • I figured it would make at least as much as 300 did considering the source material has a bigger fanbase. So here's hoping it does well because if it doesn't make at least as much as Paul Blart or Madia Goes to Jail I'm gonna have to seriously consider moving to another country.
  • It has a bigger fan base but 300 is a much simpler movie than Watchmen. This film will leave a bad taste in some people's mouths merely because of the content, where as 300 was a kick-ass fest.
  • true. i've been worried for quite a while that people aren't going to like it, because it's not what they expect from it.
  • Direct your brother to Kotaku's live blog watching the movie. Most likely it'll more enjoyable than the movie. Going out on a limb there.
  • In the vlog comments I said it would be a low 40m opening weekend. Of the things I've been hearing since then it seems like most people are accurate about the 60-70m. I don't know what a normal second week drop off is but I don't think the drop off will be much more than the usual.
  • i care because i want this film to be as amazing as the graphic novel. i want the story to have the same power and draw as it does on the page. it matters because we want the opporunity to see a director's cut in theaters, instead of just on DVD.
  • transformers was at something like 50% when it was released.

    76% is very respectable.

if the second week sees a big drop-off i'll personally buy tickets for 10 friends and make them watch it.
  • have they all read the story? hopefully they aren't disappointed......it's not your typical story.
  • that's weak bro. is there an IMAX?
  • Yeah, there is (in Indianapolis) but I'm going home next week (March 13) to see it in San Francisco's IMAX theater! =D
  • are you watching it in indiana this friday then?
  • Oh, i know it's respectable. I just was pointing out that the top critics were unkind to the film. I would probably do the same...I'm already going to be seeing it with 2 different friends on two different weekends lol.
  • JoshMayhood
Ben Lyons' blurb on Rotten Tomatoes scares the shit out of me:
"The slowed down pace of the combat sequences is intoxicating to watch."

I gave 300 a 4/10...I'm hoping this one is better and nothing like 300.
  • It also matters because this could influence the future of mature, dense comic-book (or superhero) movies. Sure, we have Dark Knight, but that will be nothing compared to the violence and mature subject matter in Watchmen.

You can look at the release of the Watchmen series when it was first published, and how it changed the world of comic books from that point on. (Not saying the movie will have anywhere near the same effect... but it could have some)
  • Also a note on the sold out showings in NY and LA.... here in Austin a good among of midnight releases are sold out.

I'll be going to the Alamo to see it, they'll be having festivities and a costume contest, along with special menu items. :)
  • good luck to your hoops man. you guys can still pull a share of the title if I'm not mistaken.
  • I kinda already assumed that. This movie isn't going to be exactly for 'casual' viewers.
  • Well, here's one for the statistic: My friends and I just purchased IMAX tickets for Thursday night, nine of us in all, but I'm the only one that has read the graphic novel. I can't wait. My brother went to an advance screening, and he said a lot of mainstream type of people walked out of the movie. I hope this isn't any indication of a pattern, but the ticket sales seem to be doing well.
  • Did anyone else pre-order tickets through Fandango? It says they give you chapter 1 of the motion comics from I-tunes but I never got the code for it?
  • Charles
I'll be buying my ticket for saturday at the Aventura, Fl IMAX. I hope this film is good. I don't want any Indiana Jones KOTCS feelings after I see this.
  • Kokushi
Cant wait to see this (i havent read the GFN), but people comments are making out the movie to be borderline NC-17 lol, im huge fan of A Clockwork Orange, A History of Violance and Easter Promises so, is this movie going to shock me a lot even if i have seen these movies in term of violence?

Its gonna pull down Iron Man + numbers at the BO ! Easy!

I just hope the matinee isn't packed friday morning.

    This is gonna be great!
  • yep yep (in the normal theater though). I was just ranting that I couldn't pre-order my tickets haha. I'll be watching it Friday night probably. Are you?
  • imaxing friday night. i also scored free tickets from best buy to watch it again.
  • If these numbers are correct, which they normally are, than this movie is going to at least get close to 300 numbers. I say that because like the article says, it's going to have a significant drop in it's second week. I think that it should keep the top spot at the box office for a few weeks. the second week it might take a hit since Disney's "Witch Mountain" comes out but if it survives, it is definitely losing the top spot the third weekend to "I Love You Man".
  • Knock it out of the park Zack. I'm really counting on this one, regardless of how much it makes. And I agree with Landfill, Witch Mountain might bring in the kiddos but I Love You Man will bring in the teens and young adults...I know I'll be one of them.
  • why does it scare you? Ben lyons said "INTOXICATING" means To stimulate or excite. and both of the guys "at the movies" said to see it
  • The ratings have dropped at RT to73% (last night's number), but that doesn't concern me, I think it'll remain a solid 70%. I didn't expect a lot of mainstream or top critics to like it, but more than I expected have given positive reviews. I think the movie will make around $50mil this weekend though I hope it does have a bigger opening.
I'm going to see it tonight, but will see it again over the weekend to give the movie my cash, since tonight is free.
