This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

AUSTRALIA
Not the complete misfire that some people made it out to be, Australia is a thoroughly entertaining and visually lush movie-watching experience. That’s not to say it isn’t flawed though, with its biggest setback being its desire to do far too much. Apparently Baz Luhrmann wasn’t content with simply making the movie a fun adventure flick, so he decided to tag on a “sweeping epic” Oscar-bait sequel as well. It’s literally two movies in one, and that’s not an exaggeration. At the halfway point, essentially every major plot point finds some means of resolution, only to have a whole slew of new conflicts introduced (many of which strive for a level of seriousness that hasn’t really been earned). Even so, both films have their merits, and despite the clumsiness of the overall narrative, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy myself.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Two deleted scenes.

I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG
I haven’t heard much about I’ve Loved You So Long, a French family drama following the lives of two sisters, but it’s been receiving some significant praise from critics and, well, there’s not much else being released this week. I recommend checking out the trailer; chances are, you’ll know pretty quickly if this is the type of movie you’re interested in.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Deleted scenes.

WATCHMEN: THE COMPLETE MOTION COMIC
Watchmen has been hailed as the greatest graphic novel ever written, a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with. So here’s an idea: read the graphic novel. What’s the point of watching a barely animated version of it? To me, this seems just as unnecessary as audio books (which aren’t at all dissimilar, seeing as how there’s only one guy doing all the voices here–and that’s including the female characters). If you’re really that interested in seeing the story come to life, just watch the movie when it hits theaters this Friday.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: $7.50 movie cash to see Watchmen in theaters.

BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA
According to the film’s reviews, Beverly Hills Chihuahua is merely bad, and not the soul-sucking abomination of cinema that its dreadful trailer made it appear to be. Personally, I could care less. The movie’s about talking Chihuahuas from Beverly Hills. And unless that concept is being used as a clever way to satirize wealthy Hollywood snobs (which I doubt), I can see no reason to subject myself to the torture of attempting to offer it a legitimate critique.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Audio commentary by director Raja Gosnell, “Legend of the Chihuahua” animated short, “Pet Pals: The Voices Behind the Dogs”, “Hitting Their Bark: On the Set with the Dogs of BHC”, deleted scenes and bloopers.

  • Hey, I think the motion comic is great! It's a way to get people who hate reading comic books to still enjoy the art and content of Moore's novel, imo. And it's a pretty good voice actor.
  • I watched the first episode out of sheer curiosity, and it was pretty terrible.

If you enjoyed it, thats great and we're all entitled to our opinion - I just thought the voice acting was terrible, the illustrations as moving images detracted from the artwork, and the overall experience was lacking.

Also, one of the best parts of Watchmen is how thick and complex it is, with tons of foreshadowing and really dense stuff. The first time I read it I was constantly checking back and forth. Another hesitation I have with the motion comic is something I'm worried about with the movie *Maybe spoiler...?* - Dr. Manhattan, being in all places and all times at once (occupying the entire plane of the whole story at the same time) being lost in translation.

The first time I read it I was constantly checking back and forth, something that I'm sure is much harder with the motion comic. • IMO, if somebody is too snobbish to appreciate something as phenomenal as Watchmen in the original form it was created, then screw them. They don't have to read it, and we don't have to listen to them bitch about how comics are lame.
  • BH Chihuahuas was awful (and yes, I saw it in the cinema). I want to rent I'VE LOVED YOU FOR SO LONG, Kristin Scott Thomas is just phenomenal.
  • Look! Another week I save money!
  • this is like the 3rd week straight without a 'buy' movie.
  • The motion comic I think looks cool and is entertaining on it's own right, although with the movie is coming out it's pretty irrelevant.

I don't really understand audiobooks either, but I guess it's for people who want to "read" while doing something else - even though that seems entirely counter intuitive. I am interested in getting the World War Z audiobook though as they've gotten an actual voice cast to do it.
  • roshow
Dont' knock audio books. I find nothing is better for a long drive than a non-fiction audio book. They're like listening to radio documentaries.
  • I agree. I still read a ton, but sometimes if I'm doing something with my hands, or driving, I really like audio books. The motion-comics thing though, sucks a lot. Period. And not just Watchmen, the whole concept is awful. They're about to destroy John Cassady's beautiful art in Astonishing X-Men that way too. I saw a preview, and I about threw up.
  • Wow...I've Loved You So Long in Rent It? It's definitely a Buy It. She gave the best performance of 2008 with her only real competition being Sally Hawkins. The movie is definitely within the top 10 best films of last year...

Maybe keep the comments about films you haven't seen more objective?
  • I got a free chapter of the Watchmen comic from itunes when i bought my tickets, while yes it is intersting, all it is, is an audiobook with pictures...

NOW... to defend the audiobooks... I listen to tons of audiobooks. partly becuase i love to read, however, i can't read all the time... SO since i am constantly driving, I use to live an hour from my job, I use the audiobooks to read.. While yes, some of them are not that great... there are/have been some really good audio-books... Some with full cast, others with just one person... For instance "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown, as read by Paul Michael was really good. This was done prior to the movie, and the way Paul did the lines, you could almost hear Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou in thier respective parts (Hence why i think Tom Hanks was a good choice)

Now, audiobooks are no replacement for reading, but sometimes you can't read everywhere you go.

they are great at work also. ;)
  • Audio books unnecessary? Some people don't have and extra time to spare to read a good book and audio books are usefull for them. And given the correct voice actor they can be a completely different experiance then reading the book yourself ie The Harry Potter audio book series read by Jim Dale or anything read by Patrick Stewart.
  • /flimluvshugh
i actually liked Australia. pretty good stuff.
  • No love for Wonder Woman?
  • "If you’re really that interested in seeing the story come to life, just watch the movie when it hits theaters this Friday."

Hmm...could this be a hint as to your opinions of the movie, Adam?
  • hahaha I paid to see it too. I thought there would be ridiculous musical numbers and dancing dogs and shit. but then it was just boringggg.
  • TrevorR.
I thought audiobooks were created to benefit blind people. I know that if I were to lose my eye sight, I'd feel very grateful for their existence.
  • skippy
"Wonder Woman" animated dvd = woohoo!
  • Wasabi Steak
I got to chance a watch the Watchmen motion comic over the wekend and its actually pretty damn enjoyable. Its the closest thing to the brining the book to life. Probably even more so than the movie.
I reccomend people check the DVD out. Having read the book, I had no problems with the DVD and found it very accurate and intresting.
  • Yeah nothing much this week, but yeah Australia is worth watching... I'll pick up Synecdoche New York and Milk next week.
  • jobless
my biggest problem with the motion comic was the voice acting for the female characters. it was kinda transvestite like..
  • It's supposed to be the greatest chihuahua movie of all-time, but I'll take your word for it! ;)
  • Joe
Biggest deal this week: If you buy any Xbox Live product at Best Buy this week, you receive a Watchmen pack that includes bonuses redeemable on Xbox Live, and (more importantly) 2 tickets to the movie worth up to 12 dollars each.

So, if you buy a single month of Xbox Live for 8 dollars, you get two movie tickets free. That's a deal even those without a 360 can love.

(BTW: The Motion Comic has been hailed by most people, but it's love-it or hate-it.)
  • Jason
Whoa whoa whoa... audiobooks "unneccesary? Apparently you've never had a long commute to a job.
  • Jason
Jim Dale was great for HP but you should check out Stephen Fry's version. His Umbridge characterization was priceless.
  • its not really a film you'd watch over and over again (seeing as most of the pacing is reliant on the viewer not knowing what happened), but especially worth a rent. I saw it at the cinema and it was totally worth my $10
  • Your 100% right I ment to say Stephen Fry but for some reason I always think of the Jim Dale name first because I heard his version first. But your right Stephen Fry > Jim Dale on the Harry Potter book reads.
  • The phrase is "I could not care less". If you "could care less" then some interest, care, and curiosity remains.
  • I guess I see what you're saying about the motion comic but you could also say the same about the movie coming out. Why not just read the book? As a fan of the book the motion comic is the probably the closest anyone will ever get to completely adapting the entire story. It was ok.
