public enemies poster

Universal Pictures has released the first movie poster for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies on MSN. Some people are comparing the poster to The Dark Knight Joker banner. The trailer will hit theaters on Friday, along with the teaser trailer for The Wachowski Brothers-produced Ninja Assassin. After the jump you can watch the Entertainment Tonight advertisement featuring a brief preview of the trailer which will be on tonight’s show. I’ve heard that the Public Enemies trailer will be online either Wednesday or Thursday.

In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.’’

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red’’ to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger. Public Enemeies is set to hit theaters on July 1st 2009.

I'm more excited to see this than the Watchmen.
  • Looks good, i like old school bank robbery films.
  • scotty
A little Johnny Depp on his litte Johnny Depp
  • They could have put Christian Bale name near his balls to make it a bit more suggestive...
  • this might be the best group of trailers for one film...
  • He named his Junk Johnny Depp. It is accurate.
  • Should be Depp Johnny... "Johnny" being British for wang :P
  • Voz
And Depp is german for idiot..
    So foolish wang ejaculates credits
  • Public Enemies looks great of course, cool one sheet too. I am pretty excited for Ninja Assassin, it was suppose to come out in January. James McTiegue did it, and he did V For Vendetta which was awesome. So hopefully it comes out soon.
  • I def cant wait to see 'Public Enemies', I mean Mann, Depp, Bale, in a story about John Dillinger crazy ass...very nice...
  • Bullz on Parade

is Public Enemies trailer with Watchmen? i can't wait to see the trailer. looks so awesome.
  • Great Poster, though I'd love to see one with both Bale and Depp
  • hella SWEET, maybe Depp will snag an Oscar for this one in 2010.
  • hopefully, his work has been overlooked for so many years.
  • Very excited for this, living in Chicago I had a chance to walk along Lincoln avenue and poke around the sets (they basically rewound the clock on an entire city block by putting up fake store fronts), and was really impressed. Can't wait

I'm more excited to see this than the Watchmen. [2]

e se mann copiou o poster, nolan copiou(porcamente) mann em tdk
  • um, why isn't bales name above the title with depp's?
  • um, why isn't bale's name above the title with depp's?
  • because Depp is the main character in the movie, whereas Bale is the man chasing him. Bale is probably more than a supporting actor here, but it's still Depp's movie.
  • Wha pa!
or maybe its because that is a Depp character poster where as Bale is not on it. ever think of that? would it make sense to put bales name up there too? nope
  • or maybe it's because Depp is the main character in the movie, whereas Bale is the man chasing him. Bale is probably more than a supporting actor here, but it's still Depp's movie.
  • What an outstanding cast, I'm looking forward to this one for sure.
  • Aw man. No floating heads?! What were they thinking!
  • Jake
Great cast...I wonder how big of a part the Rangers get in this? Stephen Lang anyone?
  • T-MACK
Ha! Where Depp is standing in the poster is on LaSalle St in Chicago. But you'll all hopefully recognize it as the spot where Batman, Depp's costar in PE, also flipped the truck in The Dark Knight.
  • "Hi, I'm Johnny Depp. My crotch spews titles and credits. Come watch it happen in my new movie Public Enemies!"

Really? Not a good poster imho. Too simple, really doesn't tell me jack about this movie. Try harder.
  • can't wait!
  • Lenny
Bring on Ninja Ass!!!!! I'm really looking forward to seeing how that ones gonna look.
Is there a release date for it yet?
  • What kind of logic is this? You could do that with any movie. "Hi, I'm Heath Ledger. I have clown makeup in my face, stuff explodes in the background, the movie is called the Dark Knight."
  • The key difference with the Joker poster is that it sets the tone for where Heath Ledger was taking this role. A role which we've already seen numerous versions and interpretations of in movies/shows/comics etc. We can clearly see that this isn't going to be the same Joker as played by Nicholson.
There's also a great deal more action in the Joker poster; things are exploding, shrapnel everywhere and there's Heath, holding the gun. You know he just caused trouble. It's interesting.

This poster is a publicity still that tells me nothing of this character. Who is Johnny Depp playing? Will people in the general public recognize him as Dillenger? Probably not if you're unfamiliar with this movies premise. What's he doing with this gun? Good Guy? Bad guy? They've got to lead my brain to think something other than, Hey, here's Johnny Depp with a gun in a period piece. Snore.

When all you have is one picture to sell me on a movie, the details tell the story.
  • So what do you want? Pictures of Johnny robbing a bank with big fat bold text written over it "IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT DILLINGER!" I get your point but i think that these kind of posters still work, just on a different level. As far as i know Michael Mann this isn't an action movie, it's more about the characters.

You see the cars in the background you think of the 1930s, you see tommygun you think gangster, you see Public Enemy you think John Dillinger.

In my opinion that poster works pretty well.
  • The the footage they showed for Ninja Assassin at the SD Comic-Con looked retarded...coupled with the fact that all these stupid little kids were screaming for that Korean actor, Rain...I think it will suck.
  • SenilityNow
Just letting you guys know, I saw a pretty much finished copy of this a month ago, and it was very mediocre. Not much story, poorly shot action, and bad HD work. Depp was great in it though. Just keep your expectations low.

  • YoungZer0 missed the point... both lines are separate thoughts. Sauce's point (and I agree) is that the poster is just a boring picture and nothing more. The whole marketing is based on it being a Johnny Depp movie and nothing more.
  • Yessssssssss
  • I really want to see that movie! I'm still waiting for a great mafia movie in the likes of Perdition Road.
  • road to perdition
  • jamie
I am very surprised that Bale's name is not headlining next to Depps
  • It's most likely due to the theme of the posters. There's probably another one of Bale with his name in the lead as well.
  • jason B
-i think the poster is badass.

-this however, "no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression."... is not the way things went down. i've heard the script takes some historical liberties to make the movie more fun - which i'm totally cool with - but the banks did not single handeldy plunge the U.S. into the depression, and it is a much MUCH more complicated issue than this description gives.

-this is one of my most anticipated films of the year, and i see it delivering 100% on the hype.
  • grade A cast. anyone who isn't looking forward to it is crazy.
  • Ahh, Entertainment Tonight, a real life Christopher Guest movie. Can't wait for PE.
  • Wow Christian Bale is on a roll lately, huh. Signed up for the right films a while back! This has looked awesome from the get-go, great to finally have sneak peaks starting. Even if the movie ends up being lame, it'd be pretty hard not to make money with Depp and Bale top billing.

    Depp is a mediocre actor
  • Only when he's with a mediocre director. He's made great films under great directors.
