Eddie Murphy’s Richard Pryor Impression

pryor murphy

Last week it was reported that Eddie Murphy had been cast as Richard Pryor in the Bill Condon-produced biopic of the famous comedian. What will Eddie Murphy’s Pryor sound like? OWF points us to a video clip from the classic 1988 Raw comedy special (which we haven’t seen in quite a few years) which features Murphy doing an impression of Pryor. Check out the clip embedded after the jump.

  • Sounds pretty close to me.
  • Yeah. Add a little makeup and that's Pryor right there. That's pretty damn good.
  • Rams
Eddie Raw was some classic comedy, along with Delirious, its such a shame he's not what he used to be, and put his name to some horrible work. Maybe, just maybe, this could become something good and show Eddie in a less twat-like light.
  • Raw is definitely one of the high points. His 'horrible' work is just because he got caught up in a slippery slope making family films. there is a light at the end of the tunnel though.

i think he'll be pretty bamf as pryor.
  • oscar nommed again? so long as he stops maikng kids movies i'm happy
  • can you post a video of pryor to see the resemblance! i laughed so hard anyway

When the article came out last week, I immediatley looked for this and ended up laughing my ass off at all the old Raw and Delirious clips on youtube.

Those 2 standup movies get funnier and funnier no matter how many times you've seen them and despite being over 20 years old.

Eddie Murphy in the 80s>>>>>>> Your favouriter entertainer

I really hope that, if Eddie gets this role, it will pull him out of this series of terrible films he's aligned himself to lately.
  • agreed.
  • that's a great clip, from a totally amazing stand up special, but we must remember that was 21 years ago. does Murphy still have it?
  • Eddie Murphy CAN act, he just haven't been given juicy roles. but he was good in Dreamgirls.
  • Eddie Murphy is too funny to be making shit movies like 'Meet Dave'...
  • Comedy actor, no in this role
  • Laserdisc edition of 'RAW' here I come. I watched this last year for the first time in a few years. Still funny as hell.
  • The inspiration of Pryor hopefully will help him get back to being funny. Everyone knows he needs it after his flops of recent years.

Classic! I for one would love to see Eddie get his comedy groove back, but the story of Richard Pryor more than likely is going to be dominated by the tragedies of his life.

But amen to that - Richard's story also deserves to be heard, and I'd have no other man portray it who's active & working right now.

Sure, Eddie does a great Pryor impression, and is likely more qualified than anyone on the planet to play him. But why even make a Pryor film at all? The man lived his life in the public eye, and was brutally candid about his personal life. Do we really need Hollywood to reenact these things? Do we really need to see Eddie as Pryor taking that fateful hit of crack and set himself on fire, going to Africa and gaining a different perspective on the N-word, getting older and infirm, or even his rough childood in Peoria? We know these things because Pryor told us in the best possible way, as only he could through is god-like gift of humor. I don't think I need Hollywood to tell me again through their filter.

    The real Eddie Murphy.
  • Where had he disappeared? Totally awesome in bowfinger

Yes, that clip is good (it was always a 'fair' impression, not 'great', and Eddie used to admit that) and all, but waaaay besides the point. That performance is from 1987 - it's Eddie 12 years and 90 pounds ago.

Acting - not Eddie's strongest suit already - only gets you so far in casting. Eddie will be 49 in less than a month, and you can see it on him clearly today. Does anyone really think he'd be at all convincing playing Pryor in his late 20s-30s?

All black comics certainly don't look alike - Eddie as Richard was always a stretch in any event. Eddie will likely just produce, and leave the role to a younger talent. (OTOH, I'd love to see Eddie tackle the role of Redd in it).

Oops - "22 years ago". Even more stark.
  • marz
i think he can pull it off...only because it seems like he's better playing someone else or multi characters rather then himself for some reason.he was funny in the nutty profesor but sucked in meet dave..altho,i think the sript just sucked.sometimes actors can only do so much.
  • Hopefully Murphy will get back to being funny again, unlike recent years where he's become a watered-down kiddie version of himself.
  • maverick
who is playing JIM BROWN!~!~! not a richard pryor movie without mr. brown, or mountains of cocaine,
  • RobDog
Still waiting on Golden Child 2...
  • Everyone is clambering to this clip, and rightfully so. This casting is brilliant and I'm glad this project is going ahead with Eddie as Richard. I'm seeing it based on the casting alone.
  • I think a lot of people don't give him enough credit (granted, the comments so far are going against that statement, but that just makes me appreciate you fellow commenters more.) It's true that Eddie Murphy has done some bad work, including what is considered one of the worst movies EVER, but a lot of it was done because his voice is so unique and his comedy is so animated that he can be easily translated to more, shall we say, "dumbed down" audiences. And because of said style, he is often written off as not being as important or as good of a comedian, or actor. I personally think he fully deserved his nomination for Dreamgirls (though there was no way he was gonna beat Alan Arkin, one of my favorite actors), and that any opportunity to use his comedy in a more serious role is always a good opportunity to see him for his true talent. I have high hopes for this movie, and this video just supports my hopes.

Oh also, everyone can agree that Donkey will go down as one of the great animated characters of all time.
  • If I'm not mistaken, in either Raw or Delirious, didn't Eddie mention something about Richard asking that only he portray him in a biopic? If I'm pulling that completely out of my ass, feel free to let me know.
  • eddie murphy is one of the most brilliant comics ever. i agree, his last good movie was bowfinger i think. norbit had so much potential but rasputia like killed the movie cause she got annoying.
  • How about that suit he was wearing back in the day? I guess the impression is ok but needs alot of work. I think that if I were watching him imitating Richard Pryor, I would still see Eddie Murphy.
  • I think he's going to continue to make these films no matter what. He was actually nominated for an Oscar a few years ago but still thought it would be awesome to make more ridiculous movies about nothing.
  • When this was first on video, my parents wouldn't let me watch it. So me and my friends snuck a copy into my room and were watching with the volume turned down. And then Eddie starts talking about listening to Richard Pryor with the volume down - crazy.

This shit material did make me popular at the lunch table - I tried so hard to do impressions like Eddie Murphy.

Raw is one of the best stand up routines ever put together......
  • hahaha, i love it.. Now i must go watch Delerious and Raw tonight..
