Kevin Smith to Direct A Couple of Dicks?

a couple of dicks

For a while now, Kevin Smith has been trying t get his indie horror film Red State off the ground. But by the director’s own admission, the project isn’t exactly marketable, and the plan was to film it on the cheap with no big stars. It seemed obvious to me that the film is going to take a few years to get off the ground, and won’t be going into production any time soon.

Now ERC Box Office is reporting that Kevin Smith will be directing a movie called A Couple of Dicks for Warner Bros. This will be a big departure for Smith — not only is the film being produced outside of Miramax/The Weinstein Co (aka his first big studio film), but this would be the first feature film project that Smith didn’t write himself. Recently Smith has made comments on his podcast, Smodcast, that he wouldn’t be against directing someone else’s screenplay, a possibility he had ruled out in his earlier years. It should be noted that Smith has tested the waters by directing the pilot episode of the CW television show Reaper.

So what is A Couple of Dicks about? Written by
Robb and Marc Cullen, and featured on the 2008 Black List (a Hollywood insider list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year), A Couple of Dicks tells the story of” two veteran LAPD detectives attempt to track down a stolen, mint-condition, 1952 baseball card.” Robin Williams was originally attached to star, but the project went into turn around, and apparently Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are now attached to the project, which has a tentatively scheduled January 29th 2010 release date.

We’ve sent an e-mail to the man himself to get a confirmation or denial on this story (we’ll keep you updated), but from my view, all the facts seem to add up nicely and neatly. Smith worked with Bruce Willis on Live Free or Die Hard and Tracy Mogan pre-30 Rock in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The Cullens wrote/produced the pilot for the tv show Manchild in which Kevin Smith had a co-starring role (Showtime decided not to pick up the show). I’ve glanced at the script, and it definitely seems close to Smith’s sense of humor. Also, it’s not surprising to see Smith leave the Weinstein’s, especially after the botched the marketing of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which many agree could have been a higher grossing film with a better studio behind the publicity.

Sounds more like a porno to me.
  • it will be nice to see Kevin use some other material. I bet it will freshen his work right up, and when he goes back to his own material it will be way better.
  • Ahaha yeah... This story is kind of funny though since Kevin Smith told a story about Bruce wanting to work together... sounds like a funny concept though, Smith does no wrong- except for Jersey Girl and Mallrats which weren't even that bad. I presume this would be R? Kind of disappointed though that Red State hasn't gotten off the ground yet though, it sounded pretty awesome. Also I know that Smith always says he has no style but I think he does have a style or realism. I love that one scene in Zack and Mirri where Rogen goes to the room with that porno girl while looking at Banks, that was a pretty awesome scene.

Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan? That's an odd pairing...
  • i wish we knew more about the part, but Morgan should complement a 'serious' willis pretty well.

Willis can be pretty hilarious at times also, but i don't know if they'd play off each other as well if that were the case.

Check the IMDB credits for the Cullens - they wrote/produced the pilot for the tv show "Manchild" in which Kevin Smith had a role.
  • SteveP
The Cullen's also wrote Manchild which Kevin Smith was in as a lead.
  • JOhn
If I'm not mistaking, didn't Kevin Smoth also direct an episode of 'HEROES'?
  • He was up to write and direct an episode of "Heroes: Origins" but the series got axed during the WGA strike.
  • haha yeah, a gay porno :-P
  • yeah I know, right? I thought Tracy Morgan wasn't that popular....
  • I think that 30 Rock has boosted his popularity.

It's also nice to hear that Kev may be doing that Bruce Willis project he's been wanting to do.
  • movie sounds like WIld Hogs + Without a Paddle + K.S + B.W = something interesting
  • I definitely agree....changing things up a bit can be great for "artist" or atleast people who work creatively. Do something new and come back to your work with a fresh/open mind.
  • I don't see what was wrong with the marketing for Z+M Make a Porno. It sparked a whole lot of controversy
  • They chose to stick stick figures on posters, billboards, buses...etc instead of selling it like Universal sells a Judd Apatow movie. I know people are getting sick of Seth Rogen, but he still pulls in big numbers. To not put his face on the poster was a huge blunder.
  • The original posters did highlight Rogen and Banks but I think they pulled them because of a pubic hair. The whole stick figure thing was actually Rogen's idea and Smith loved it. They covered that in a podcast around the time the movie came out I believe.
  • I thought it was funny for a teaser poster, but not for their mainstream advertising. Also, TWC's decision to release the film on Halloween resulted in a much lower than predicted opening weekend. Everyone was at partys or out trick or treating on Friday, and the $ numbers were really low.
  • That I'll agree with. I was really anticipating the movie but instead waited a day as I didn't want to spend Halloween in a theater. Would have been a smarter move to release it during the Summer, when things are all hot and sweaty to begin with.
  • Yeah but the movie wasn't a bomb or anything, it just wasn't big. I am sure its making a killing on DVD like most Kevin Smith movies.

I was hoping for Dig Dug: The Movie, but this project really intrigues me.
  • It's a very fun script. I think I'll miss Robin Williams' involvement, but this still looks pretty keen to me.

This looks and feels like those bad buddy cop movies from the mid 90's and early 2000's. I dont know it sounds kinda terrible.
Nevertheless if its got Tracy Morgan and Kevin Smith involved Im sold and who doesnt love Bruce? If the script is as good as people are making it out to be, it could be great. But this look like a movie that will do better on DVD rather than in the theaters. Then again I thought the same thing about Paul Blartt and that turned out bigger in the box office than assumed.
  • I'm glad to see him getting work as a director.
  • I love Kevin Smith, so I am hopeful this will be good
  • yeah. let's hope he regains his steam and momentum with this one.

Zack and Miri was good, but I think that this project has the potential to create more excitement and buzz than ZnM, leading to bigger numbers for him hopefully.

This is probably the result of what Kevin Smith relates in Threevening: Bruce Willis wanted to make a movie with Kevin Smith so now he's gonna finally do it.
  • Geeth
    Kevin Smith must be stopped.

The singularly most over-rated person in Hollywood.
  • GEETH_DEATH
    You should be murdered.
  • No matter how good or bad this movie turns out to be, I can't wait for the posters.
"A Couple of Dicks"? That's genius. Every 7 year old in the country will pee their pants everytime they see the title.
  • jerry seinfeld
""A Couple of Dicks"? That's genius." Fuck. Really??! If that's the case, it's no wonder Hollywood still employs no talent's like Smith...
  • A couple of 7 year olds... and me.
  • Yeah this could be something funny. Tracy Morgan is extremely funny in 30 Rock.
  • This sounds like a great project for Kevin and perfect timing for his career. A refreshing change of pace andf scenery. Peter, I'm pretty sure Kevin just confirmed this on his Twitter as he posted: "Didja hear that? That's the sound of a microphone being dropped on a stage." referring to Threevening where he spoke about Bruce Willis calling to offer to work with Kevin on a project one day... he dropped the mic on the stage, acting out his shock.

Is this gona be a view askew production?
  • In Kevin Smith's third "Evening With..." DVD he tells a story about Bruce Willis calling him (post Die Hard) to say that they should do a film together. Smith lamented the fact that he didn't have a project that would work for Willis (which is ironic because Smith originally tried to get Willis for the Will Smith role in Jersey Girl but was denied). Guess Smith's friends the Cullens heard that story too and told Smith about their little script in turn around.
  • Yes, as I mentioned above. Video of the moment in Threevening is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb1JYOeLNJ4
  • I know Williams can play serious roles, but i don't think I could take him seriously as a cop. i like willis better for the part. that's just me though.
  • Palmer
Perhaps a Gibson/Glover dynamic from Lethal Weapon?
  • Captain Molotov
Tracy Morgan is fucking hilarious. He was great on SNL and is probably the funniest thing about 30 Rock. I'll see it.
  • Hi I'm Tracy Jordan, and I'm bring the black to NBC.
And I'm as proud as a peacork baby!
  • so... I read script for this, it is really funny and interesting... this will be coom flick
  • I think this is a good move for Kevin Smith. I don't know the guy, but after listening to the SModcast episodes in which he rambled about how poorly Zack and Miri did, he really seemed bummed about it, and this might bring him a little oxygen, perhaps not taking it so personally because it's not his material.

The only thing that scares me a bit is that I find the pairing of Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan a little too 'typical hollywood''. I hope Kevin Smith won't turn this into stereotypical crazy black guy a la Chris Tucker, and tough retired cop a la Bruce Willis. Oh, wait, Bruce Willis is actually in this movie.
  • I'm just thinking that I'd much rather see other people direct Smith's scripts than see Smith direct other peoples' scripts. directing isn't what I like about him...at all.
  • philsklut
hahah keven smith has a great sence of humer. he has me still watchen the movies he had made in his later years< such as jay and silent bob, clerks, clerks 2;all of which were so funny. the way he films things is a way that people arnt used to,but a very creative way. he thinks of filming things in a different way, from the real world point of view. like what you would see through ur eyes if the sistuation was happening to you.moke him as you want but he has a creative way of thinking.hes not one of those directers/writers that do it cuz of the money, he seems to do it because he likes it,and of course the money, its always a nice touch.but ya cant wait to see the movie, hope its as good as clerks 2.
