Judd Apatow Producing Ghostbusters 3?

bill murray ghostbusters

Update: This report has been debunked.

Production Weekly is reporting that Ghostbusters 3 is now officially being produced by Judd Apatow Productions. No big shock here, considering the initial rumors had most of the Apatow players cast as the film’s new Ghostbusters. Last we heard, Dan Aykroyd said that Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Greg Stupnitsky started working on the script this Summer and that they were aiming for a fall 2009 production start. However, we’ve gotten no official word if the screenplay drafts that have been handed in thus far are worthy of a greenlight from the studio.

Discuss: Which Apatow players would you cast as the new Ghostbusters?

  • Fartie Lange
ugh, this is probably going to not be very good

    Ghostbusters 2 was freakin awful
  • i disagree, but this will be terrible.
  • Sean Vrabel
Paul Rudd can do dead pan very well, not as good as Murray but still good!!
  • Paul Rudd and Bill Hader would be the best choices.
  • I agree Rudd, Hader, possibly Jason Segal and Craig Robinson...as much as enjoy Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen they are over exposed these days...they could do some friends a favor and step aside
  • Chris
    definitely hader!
  • I agree Rudd, Hader, possibly Jason Segal and Craig Robinson...as much as I enjoy Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen they are over exposed these days...they could do some friends a favor and step aside
  • i agree chris. rogen should be relegated to a cameo if he is involved at all.
  • McBride would be frikkin awweeesooommmme.
  • Perfect ghostbusters dude...To me Rudd, Hader, Segal, and Robinson would be too funny...
  • Jonas Imp
What r u talking about? G.Busters II is one of the few sequels that was any good - and it owed entirely to the amazing chemistry of its cast, which was still intact.

Apatow & co. are perfect for this, b/c by now we know most of G.Busters dialogue was improv'd, and they're clearly very good at working that way.

    My vote:
-Bill Murray HAS to HAS to be in it, in a supporting role.
    No compromise on this.

-Seth Rogen's a shoe-in (unless he did a complete 180 and tried a movie w/out him) or guy from Eastbound & Down (though he might be busy as that show's a homerun hit! no pun.)
    -Paul Rudd (supporting role)
    -James Franco (buster)
-Dude from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. (buster)
-Black Dude from Pineapple Express (buster)

Basically, make it a huge Freaks & Geeks reunion, w/ that girl who played Velma in Scooby Doo (also a F & G'er - and cute!) as the new Janine.
  • I totally agree with you Linda Cardellini would be absolutely perfect for the new Janine.
  • NO way dude, GB II is great, but Apatow will ruin this.
  • Truecoat
Wow, GB II was horrible. The only thing I remember besides being very disappointed was that they sprayed the Statue of Liberty with goo so they could control it like a robot? Seriously, do you really like that plotline, it was just awful.
  • Avidman
    Turevoat ---Plotline?

Dude - it did not pretend to be Schindler's List. It was meant to be escapist fun. And it succeeded.

    Lighten up?
  • Truecoat
Escapist fun? The point is I wanted to escape and it wasn't fun. Stripes=fun, Animal House=fun, GBII=we have to include it with ghostbusters on a two pack dvd or no one would ever buy it.
  • Dvq
at least Bill Hader has to be on this!.
  • Samm Levine and Martin Starr from the Freaks and Geeks days as too young guys who are too old to believe in ghosts but still do.
  • Jonathan
Craig Robinson, Rogen, Danny Mcbride, and Paul Rudd.
  • Samm Levine and Martin Starr from the Freaks and Geeks days as two guys who despite their age still fervently believe in ghosts
  • Noodler
someone tell me why we need new ghostbusters?
  • Eric
I love Apatow. I love GB. I also love ranch dressing and rum. You would never mix those together. Save us the heartache.

What I'm seeing in Ghostbusters 3 is a transitional film. Like Star Trek Generations etc. I don't think it will work so well with Ghostbusters. I wished they left it with 1&2. Especially since computer effects have become a front runner in special effects. CGI today look really good, but an 80s classic like Ghostbusters won't be the same with computer over practical effects. They could pull it off, but Indiana Jones 4 will always stick in my mind of a reboot with unnecessary computer effects and a back seat story.

and also are any of you people even ghostbusters fans? i mean jeez seth rogen? bill hader? people from freaks and geeks? like why. if you like ghostbusters, it should be the original 4. thats it. ive been mad for years that bill murray wouldnt do a 3rd one, but i gotta say, bill, if they are going to give ghostbusters away to seth rogen and others, then dont do it. and do your best to stop this project.
  • I am a huge GB fan and still have ALL of the toys (in my parents attic) to prove it, even the later, more absurd ones.

For years I have been saying that the only way to do a Ghostbusters 3 is to have the original members (yes, that means that the original 4 WILL be in this movie) training a new group. I think that Apatow and crew are the perfect people for the job. The original 2 films were made up of SNL and SCTV members (except for Ernie Hudson who was written for Eddie Murphy), so why not have the next crew be from the "new generation" of comedy. Who would you pick? Jimmy Fallon, Keenan Thompson?

By biggest fear, which has been mentioned, the CGI. MAKE IT REAL! That is what made the originals great!

I am pro-Ghostbusters 3 (they shouldn't call it Ghostbusters 3 though) and I think that so far the developments are appealing.

This is exciting news. I just re-watched both Ghostbusters over the weekend and still enjoyed them. Some movies I loved when I was a kid don't live up to my memories now but these are still fun, even Ghostbusters II which I like more now than when it came out. Seth Rogen and every member of the original cast have to be in the new one. Good stuff!
  • Eric
Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, and Bill Hader are my choices. I actually don't want to see Rogen in this in anything but a supporting role.
  • I would love to see Zach Galifianakis in there. I don't know why that has anything to do with Apatow's crew, but there it is. Jay Baruchel in a Ramis role would be great. I think this could be good, despite the naysayers and the fans of the original. No side romance stories - just ghosts, though. That's the key. I'd even go for the original cast.
  • i forgot about Baruchel, he'd be fantastic in Ramis' original role.

and anything with Galifanakis is worth the price of admission.
  • blah. Judd Apatow will either make it excellent or shiteous.
  • LouisTully
WHY do we need new Ghostbusters???
  • edward
rudd and hader would be great but PLEASE no one else.
one or two new ghostbusters will be alright, but this cant go extreme ghostbusters or it will fail horribly.
  • Lono
    I'm with you Louis.
  • Lono
    @Nooodler

Here's hoping the Apatow bubble bursts soon...if it hasn't already. So tired of all of those people. Especially Rogan.
  • Bad Idea
They're all going to be in it in one way or another. How about Ghostbuster Academy? Then you can have all your favorites in there. That's about as good an idea as having a Ghostbusters 3.

Please, no Seth Rogen as a freaking Ghostbuster. So tired of that guy.
  • i don't know how well McBride and Rudd will play off each other. i'd rather see Jason Segal and Bill Hader besides rogen and mcbride.
  • Agreed, Danny McBride just isn't suited to this type of role. I'd love to see Jason Segel though, he's awesome on How I Met Your Mother.
  • Moranis
Didn't Seth Rogen call this 'The worst idea I have ever heard'?
  • MarkGoug
If we've GOT to see Apatow dudes in this, I'm with everyone saying Paul Rudd should lead the crew. No McBride or Rogen, please, please, please, please. I'd like to see Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and could we perhaps get somebody from outside this world of Apatow? How about Seann William Scott? Or bring back Romany Malco! And I think we can all agree that the more Bill Hader, the better.
  • Hmmm this will is either spectacular news or disastrous news. I'd much rather see more involvement from Akroyd and Ramis on script and Ivan Reitman doing something... have they proven they could be good again? No, not lately, so maybe this is OK. Or perhaps this is their chance to rise once again!

I'd rather just see our four original guys, but I doubt this is going to happen so... so if anyone from Apatow's camp has to come over in any capacity, I'd say the fellas that have the personalities and shtick that might work in the GB universe is: Paul Rudd, Martin Starr and maybe Jason Segel and Bill Hader. Not Rogen, not Hill. My issue here is that they could do a real "wink" to the camera, performance wise. Yeah, it is arguable Murray was doing that, but what worked so well with the first film is that there was such a naturalism to their performances. There wasn't this playing it up attitude for the sake of a laugh, particularly from Akroyd and Ramis. I just don't see these kind of roles or approaches in comedies nowadays.
  • I'd like to see the original cast play a major role as well. I think that the movie should be about the originals apprenticing a few new ones (probably Bill Hader maybe Paul Rudd). But, if Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Harold Ramis aren't in major roles, this movie will probably suck...
  • Coming to a theater near you. Ghosterbuster 3

Starring Seth Rogan as the guy he plays all the time. Paul Rudd as friend to Rogan. Jonah Hill as the funny fat guy. Mclovin as Mclovin the ghost.

The trailer scene: There all smoking weed when the smoke turns to a ghost while they start to sing the Ghostbusters theme.
  • Lono
"I just don't see these kind of roles or approaches in comedies nowadays."

I think maybe it is because back then they actually wrote dialogue instead having the guys come in and just "riff" or improv as if everything that they can spew out of the tops of their heads is guaranteed comic gold. Alot of stuff now just feels to me like bits that might have been funny on set after along day shooting, but which should have just ended up in the outtakes. It just laziness.
  • Thrillhouse
Bill Hader basically IS Dan Akroyd
  • edward
really? I see much more of a likeness to murray in his early snl days...
  • Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel. That would be great, but not as great as the original cast ofcourse.
  • DRF
Uhh... I think I'll stick to the video game. Unless the movie has only the original players with Danny McBride. I'd love to see Danny McBride with Bill Murray. THAT would be comic bliss. Add in Sacha Baron Cohen, and you might get a movie as good, if not better than, the original. If they cast anyone else from the Apatow stable, it will suck.
  • edward
danny mcbride plays white trash and he plays it well. I really dont see that fitting into the ghostbusters world at all.
  • edward
then again apatow has had a producer title on other films in the past and hasnt filled them with his usual crew in lead roles so maybe people shouldnt freak out just yet. plus everything prior to this for the last few months makes it sound as if the original four are still the leads and not going to sit on the backburner here anyway. I dont mind one or two new ghostbusters but hopefully apatow is smart enough not to mess with things any more than that.
  • Django Lionheart
To all original cast loyalists: Have you seen Dan Akroyd lately? He. Has. Lost. ALL his magic.

Harold Ramis disappeared behind the camera and truly was the 'brains' behind it, so I'll vote for him to be a script consultant, along w/ Apatow.

-Bill Hader: absolutely! (I kept thinking you guys were talking about the dude who played Napolean Dynamite. EW! No WAY!)

-I'm just sick of Rogen paired w/ Johah Hill. They're just horrible together, but I really liked Rogen & Franco.

-The reason this needs to be made is to create a new generation of little kids building proton packs out of cardboard, tubing, and flashlights. END OF STORY.

-Also: We need animatronics! Don't make it overly reliant on CG. Slimer is an absolute classic that cannot be improved upon!
