Last weekend, the Zombies Take Charlotte folk presented American Zombie, a retrospective of pictures by George Romero with an emphasis on the GAR-Z, his zombie movies. Brilliantly, the good man himself was there to hold a Q&A; sadly, I didn’t get to attend (being half a world away, and all) but I have just been sent a very fuzzy audio recording of the session by a jam-and-spoony chap who was there, and having finally fought my way through 90 minutes of swerving volume, muffled voices and sharp bursts of tinny pain whenever the audience laugh or applaud, I can offer you some key bullet points.

  • Asked about recent changes to the media, Romero revealed that he’s working on a script about virtual reality. He’s basing it upon advances in the tech that he’s heard about and is concerned by. Expect this to be more like eXistenZ than Virtuality or Hackers. Romero talked about people changing their appearance in virtual worlds, as well as recreation of the cross-sensational stimuli in drinking a cold drink, for example.
  • Romero said that Zombies are just his “ticket to ride”, the way he gets the pictures funded, but that the films are really about humans. He didn’t really need to explain this, of course – it’s obvious enough and part of his defining style. Romero did say that he’s past resisting the zombie subgenre, however, so as long as cheques keep getting offered on the basis that he’ll make a zombie film, he’ll make a zombie film.
  • Romero wanted Savini to make a cameo effect, one great zombie effect, for his new Dead film but the Canadian film board denied this. However, music can be legally outsourced so John Harrison who did the much loved Dawn score was allowed to do the music.
  • There are countless horses in the footage we’ve seen so far and dogs too. Romero says that this time out he specifically addresses the issues of animals and zombies, but he didn’t give a clear explanation of how – zombies feeding on beasts? Zombified animals? Or just a reveal that the undead definitely don’t want to feast on animal flesh?
  • Asked about Slumdog Millionaire and The Dark Knight, Romero didn’t really have much nice to say so he trailed off pretty quickly. That’s my boy.
  • Romero would still like to make Before I Wake – the project that cost him The Mummy - but three studios have spent development money on it now so it’s already in significant debt and, as such, is seen as being “star dependent”. We need a Romero loving star to throw themselves at the film before we have any chance of seeing it.

There was a behind the scenes featurette shown at the Q&A and a quick trip to YouTube reveals some fearless pirate captured it. This spy footage is, of course, wonky and imperfectly focused, but the clip shown does contain quite a lot of actual imagery from the film and reveals a wealth of zombies – probably more in these few scenes than in the entirety of Diary of the Dead.

No nice things to say about Slumdog and Dark Knight? Interesting...
  • Yeah, some nice things. Just not many. And they were held back somewhat.

I would try and quote it but it's hard getting exact wording from this recording.
  • Yeah, some nice things. Just not many. And they were somewhat lost behind his criticisms.

I would try and quote it but it's hard getting exact wording from this recording.

Dont worry about it. He's one of the only guys I would accept criticism from.
  • dvva
Not after Diary of the Dead.
  • miguel
    true.
  • It's probably a coin flip between Diary and Land for the worst one so far but he's made 3 others that are great.
  • I love them all, including Diary and Land.
  • Oh I like them all too, it's just that some are way better than others. If you had to rank them, how would they go?
    Here are my rankings:
    1. Day of the Dead
    2. Dawn of the Dead
    3. Night of the Living Dead
    4. Diary of the Dead
    5. Land of the Dead
  • Night - Dawn - Day - Land - then Diary..

Which is in the same order that he filmed them. My expectations aren't that high for ....of the Dead but I hope to be pleseantly surprised.
  • The only reason why my are out of order is because I watched Day before the other two and liked it so much. These movies could be stand alone movies since they all give a recap of what happened to cause the current situation in each movie.

It would be nice to see a Romero movie that could live up to the original three.
  • Night - Dairy - Dawn - Day - Land

And after I just posted a comment in regards to your cloverfield post, I find out that you think Diary of the Dead is better than 1978's Dawn, which is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. Both movies coincidentally involve home movie cameras. I don't care about the acting in a movie, and I will admit that the effects were fantastic in this movie, but how can you honestly say that Diary is better than Dawn, which is a hallmark of genre films? Maybe I'm just the one off his rocker...
  • Okay, to be fair. I like Dairy only slightly better than Dawn. They're both good movies, and they both go beyond just a simple "let's kill zombies" storyline, which I think separates an average zombie movie from a great zombie movie. Personally, I have a preference for Dairy simply because I like the issues it raises about technology and voyeurism and about our 24-hour information society. It’s aware of itself as a movie and as a zombie movie. It’s smart and interesting.

Another great response. I'm too used to the immature bunks who regularly post on IMDB who never explain their reasoning. I remember when I watched it there was a part where I couldn't understand why the story went in that direction, but for the life of me I can't remember now. I'll watch it again.

I do remember that the old guy was the shit and I didn't want him to go.
  • Thanks, Man. Sometimes I get a frustrated with the "you suck" mentality that some people tend to have here as well. I wish there was more discussion going on rather her than a lot of name calling .
  • No, no... he likes "dairy" from the dead better than a few Romero films, very different.
  • No-no, nobody likes "dairy" from the dead better than *any* Romero film?! Although I haven't tried it myself...
  • I'm pretty sure zombies are lactose intolerant.
  • Uber-Geek
Diary of the Dead was fantastic.
  • Right on.
  • A guy that makes almost nothing but zombie movies has no nice things to say about Slumdog Millionaire and Dark Knight.

    Alright.
  • I'm no longer getting excited for any Romero zombie project. I thought Land of the Dead was bad and Diary.. was unwatchable.
  • Can't wait for the next Romero flick.
  • Nice picture of Romero Brendon, I especially like the part where you had to have "Land of the Dead" in there as well. That's probably his worst one so far but it's ok since he's got alot more that are better.

Oh yeah, anything Romero makes I will gladly watch.
  • The Reaper
The guy had one good film at the very beginning of his career, I don't know why he is held to such high esteem. All of the zombie movies are horrible. It is as if anytime there is a change with technology or a change in direction film makers take their films, he copies it, and just adds zombies.
  • You sir, are no Zombie fan. What will you do when the day comes and the hordes take over? Do you have an emergency plan in place?
  • Am I the only one who finds the resemblance between Romero and Stan Lee... uncanny?
  • Dawn. Night. Diary. Day. Land.
  • I liked Land of the Dead. Got no problem with it at all. Diary I just didn't get. It's not often I stop a film halfway through and go and do something else. Anything else. Not sure that he can carry it off anymore. And a VR film. Could this be the never mentioned nor heard rumour concerning Lawnmower Man 3.
  • At this point I can't get excited for a new Romero zombie movie after both Land and Diary of the dead. It's just that both were so bad and it feels like Romero has lost his way. hopefully his new movie will be better.
  • Yeah, It's crazy.
  • evan_au
do you people not understand what his movie are about why give so much cheek to diary and land they are awesome on so many more levels than you guys are taking in
  • Can you comprehend that, while the movie may have a message, we still may not like it? I think everyone got what Diary was all about - it was about as subtle as a volcanic eruption.
  • Joe
I was at this Q and A and someone asked what he thought of the nominations of the Oscars that night since he was a member of the Academy and he didnt really say anything bad about the Dark Knight (he said it was a bit long) or Slumdog, he said that he just like Benjamin Button better.
  • Josh
George Romero is one of the most overrated directors. Night, Dawn and Day were great, but after Land and Diary, I really could care less what he has to say. Especially when it comes to saying bad things about 2 superior films.
  • I have to admit I'm a huge fan of the zombie genre i.e. George Romero.. I don't care how cheesy his last three have been but I loved them. land of the dead was great it introduced "Dead Reckoning" and had Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright in a carnival like scene. even Diary of the Dead, it took a little bit to get use to the way it was shot but after resinating in my head it grew on me
  • Bobby Simpson
Uh, did anyone else look at the article picture and think maybe Romero's next movie might only receive a limited release in heaven?
  • Why does Diary get such a bad rap? I thought it was a great movie. Sure the acting wasn't great, but great acting is not a hallmark of Romero films. It was so much better than Land and definitely better than Day. To me it embodies what was said above, that Romero's films ultimately aren't about Zombies, but about people and relationships. Dairy, like Night , was a thoughtful and engaging movie. It was smarter than most Zombie movies, bringing Romero back to form after the completely unwatchable Land.
  • dvva
Land is a billion times better than Diary! Diary was just terrible. At least Land had production values. Diary had none of that.
  • So, production values make a movie good?
  • dvva
When the acting and story suck with no tension whatsoever... what else is there? I'm supposed to believe a girl who witnessed the death of her friends and boyfriend decided to go back to that footage, edit it and then put music on it for dramatic effect? It actually felt like a student film.
  • I'd like to see George A. Romero's take on the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. I haven't read it, but from my roommate has told me about it, it sounds awesome.
  • zombie survival guide is great.

have you read world war z yet
  • Not yet, I have both books on my amazon wish-list waiting for me to hit "add to cart" haha.
  • I really didn't dig land or Diary too much, but its Romero, and he is awesome...
  • skippy
    hmm... i didn't get the "jam-and-spoony" reference
