“It’s the Nard Dawg meets Glory meets Bill and Ted’s.” Actor Ed Helms (The Office), a native of Georgia, will write and top-line an untitled comedy about a highly dedicated Civil War re-enactor who travels back in time to the actual event. Joining the character in the potentially history-’ploding debacle will be two fellow re-enactors and a black history professor. Office co-star, Steve Carell, will produce and joining Helms on script duties will be writing partner, Jake Fleisher. This summer, Helms co-stars in Todd Phillips’s The Hangover alongside Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis, which is being singled out as a break-out hit along the lines of Old School, Knocked Up, or Bachelor Party without a coke donkey.

There is no shortage of comedies (and hokey ghost hunting shows for that matter) that poke fun at re-enactors of all sorts. Choke featured similar re-enactors in Colonial Williamburg, The Cable Guy had a few memorable scenes at Medieval Times, and The Sasquatch Gang is filled with fantasy re-enactor nerds and their depressing foam weapons. Any others come to mind? Let us know in the comments.

  • This either sounds brilliant or really stupid.
  • ITS BRILLANT!
  • definitely.

he should defeat Robert E. Lee by sneaking up on him in a hybrid.
  • Boogie
There was an Episode of the Outer Limits, titled "Gettysburg" that was very similar though not played for laughs.
  • Kate
There are re-enactment hijinks in Sweet Home Alabama and The Battle of Shaker Heights too, and it's the central conceit of recent Britcom Faint Heart.
  • Inertiatic
Garden State had a character working at Medieval Times who was the punch line of a number of jokes.
  • ROLE MODELS poked fun at both LARPers and the SCA.
  • The premise is hilarious so hopefully the execution will be as well.
  • JASON
Script in development called Swisher deals with a civil war reenactor who goes loopy after his wife commits suicide and thinks that his younger brother's drug dealer problems can be solved by civil war war strategies.
  • 'Role Models' had those guys dress up as warriors...
  • Sounds fun. Hopefully it turns out.
  • i'm down for anything with the Nard Dawg.
  • There's a great episode of South Park where they won't stop reenacting despite terrorists holding them hostage.
  • First thing I thought of too. I love that one.
  • The best part of that episode the fact that they robbed a Burger King and are acting like the Die Hard terrorists.
  • Hahah...NICE! I'm pretty sure what were talking about is LARP'ing.

Live Action Role Playing...which is hysterical in it's very design. Someone needs to do one with goth kids playing vampire.
Role models did a pretty good med evil one.
  • There was an episode of Psych that dealt with re-enactors.
  • This guy doesn't even write on the office, does he?

I don't understand why hollywood is greenlighting scripts from every B- rate comedic actor in town.
  • This has potential to be extremely offensive. Not saying that's a bad thing, just saying.
  • auteur_inutile
He looks like Ben Linus in that pic.
  • This sounds like it could be a fun movie to watch. It kind of reminds me of Almost Heroes with Chris Farley for some reason.
  • Anything this guy does, im there.. Such a good addition to The office
  • Ed Helms is a funny man especially on The Office. NARD DOG!

    Hello,

This project sound like my Civil War time travel script, REENACTMENT, finalist in a past Virginia Screenplay competition. Logline: Reenactors get their wish to fight in a real battle. It is currently listed on www.inktip.com

Also, REENACTMENT recently made the Quarterfinals in the Writer's Network screenplay competition, 2009.

Would love to talk to Ed Helms about the prospect of him and his team taking a look.

    All the best, Marshall

This sounds similar to my Civil War time travel script, REENACTMENT. Logline: Reenactors get their wish to fight in a real battle. REENACTMENT made the finals of the Virginia Screenplay Competition several years ago. Also, it just made the Quarterfinals of the Writer's Network Contest, this year.

I would love to talk to Ed about making this movie. His idea is a lot like mine, but I have a special ironic ending. You see, it is all about avoiding modern life, where the past seems so much more attractive until you land there.

The script is viewable on www.inktip.com to producers or agents. I am looking for both, so please feel free to check it out.

All the best, Marshall Ferrin, mferrin2@verizon.net
