Zack Snyder Talks About Adapting The Dark Knight Returns

zack snyder the dark knight returns

At San Diego Comic-Con last year, Zack Snyder said that he “would love to see Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns made into a movie.” Later at the Entertainment Weekly Visionaries panel, Miller told Snyder “You can do it anytime you want to Zack”. To which Snyder said he was making a note of Miller’s response.

Earlier this week in our video blog discussion about the future of Batman movies, I suggested that after doing a third Batman film Warner Bros not proceed with another sequel. It is expected that Batman 3 might be the last Batman movie for series helmer Christopher Nolan, and I would love them to instead jump into the future and do an adaptation of The Dark Knight returns or jump into the even further future and do a Batman Beyond movie. That way they could potentially return to the Batman series if Nolan wanted to return after a few years of rest.

Lets be realistic, a Zack Snyder adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns will probably never happen, but it’s fun to imagine what could be. FirstShowing got the chance to ask Snyder what he would do with the material if he ever got the chance to bring it to the big screen.

I think the thing that’s awesome about Dark Knight, like Watchmen, is that it is a complete and total experience, that was unlike anything anyone has ever seen, and still is,” Snyder said. “I think the big challenge for me would be — it’s so ‘montage-y’ and so media thick, that you just have to — that’s the techniques you’d have to develop and make work. But as far as the rest goes, the thing I’d be really interested in is that kind of Frank [Miller] narration over that cool action, that’s a thing we haven’t really seen in that context.

Miller’s four-issue comic book miniseries, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, was first published in 1986. It has since become one of the most popular graphic novel/trade paperbacks of all time. It reintroduced Batman to the general public as the psychologically dark character of his original 1930s conception, and helped to usher in an era of “grim and gritty” superheroes from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s.

Set 20 years in the future, criminals run amok and a gang called the Mutants terrorize Gotham City as superheros are a thing of the past. Bruce Wayne has been retired from crime fighting for ten years following the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin. Despite Wayne’s funding the rehabilitation of Harvey Dent (Two-Face), Dent returns to crime. Wayne dons the Batman costume again and apprehends Dent, but the populace debates whether Batman is a savior.

You can buy The Dark Knight Returns on Amazon for around $10.

    oh christ no
  • JFK
Yes, your right. It needs your blessing Jesus. And it would need to star Micheal Keaton as the old aged Bruce Wayne.
  • Keaton as Batman again, interesting.
  • Fartie Lange
i think he should try something original instead of just making a name for himself based on other peoples work
  • His next movie is going to be original- Sucker Punch. Yeah I know what you mean though, but Snyder is obviously a fan boy so can you really blame him wanting to do comic book movies?!? I honestly would LOVE to see him do The Dark Knight Returns.
  • That would be a great movie, and I could imagine it as a trilogy. The first one would be taking on a Robin, and the Robin would die and Batman would retire. The Next one would be the actually Dark Knight Returns. And the saga would conclude with a Batman Beyond movie. What would you guess think?
  • I like that idea. I don't really know much about Batman Beyond though, from what I've seen of it's pretty cool.

EDIT: Thinking more of your idea, I think that they should just start with a Dark Knight Returns story. A Robin intro movie would probably be boring...I think you could just start the Dark Knight returns with a flashback instead...

For the love of all things good, please, stop! Batman is entertaining and engaging for once! I can only see this desire to cash in on the success leading to the Batman and Robin's twin(the nadir of films, AGAIN)

How does this seem like a good idea? Let Nolan finish the series and leave it alone for a few years, before we kill ourselves with raping the franchise.
  • Although it would be nice to see a Batman film with proper action, I think it's just too soon after the monumental success of The Dark Knight.
  • JFK
Well it would be four years from now at least.
  • I'm not a big fan of this comic too much anyway. It was the first real Batman comic I had read, and when I first read it, I freaken loved it! But then I revisited it, and dear lord it's really overrated. Whereas Watchmen's hype lives up to itself, The Dark Knight Returns really doesn't. It's just silly. Robin is not well done, the Mutants are just stupid, and The Joker is boarder line pathetic. The only thing really great is the Superman/Batman fight. So really, I hope this doesn't work out.
  • JFK
You point of view is not shared.
  • /filmluvs
yeah i like what Returns did for Batman comics. but i don't particularly like it.
  • In, like, 5-7 years, I would love to see one. But Snyder has to work that much harder to not just be a fad, and actually make a name of his own, so he can helm something big like Batman in the not-so-distant future.
  • The sooner this franchise gets rebooted, the better.
  • False.
  • i would love love love to see Batman fight the leader of the mutants. that would look amazing on screen.

if they DO make it though, I hope that there aren't a million newscasts. that's would be pretty annoying in a film.
  • toho
please God. no. Not to the Visionary Director of the month. He'll create a Slo-Motion capture camera, revolutionize shitty action movies yet again, get a turkey waddle, shit all over your childhood dreams, and take the place of George Lucas in 25 years.
  • Andy
    Retard.
  • Ross
What if Clint Eastwood was Batman?
  • Joey
If Clint Eastwood was Batman, I would be content to die after seeing that performance. Could you imagine him going "Gran Torino" on criminals asses in a Batman suit? Pure geekgasm.
  • Clint Eastwood was originally supposed to play Two-Face in the 1960's Batman series before the show ended. And yeah, he would make an amazing Batman.
  • Morgan
I read Dark Knight Returns in my first year of Uni and loved it. My immediate reaction was Clint Eastwood - I kid you not. And as Nolan began to re-establish some cred with Batman, especially after Dark Knight, I had the strong conviction that Nolan should do his third and final film, that clint eastwood should play batman, jack nicholson the joker (open to other options), and they could end it all there. Finish Batman with $1.5 billion for the studios and the greatest comic book film ever made.
  • Ben
If anyone wants to read another cool Batman in the future story that would be easier to adapt (not necessarily as good as TDK but easier to translate) is the story Batman Year One Hundred. It's pretty sweet.
  • Joey
I like Zach Snyder right now, but let's wait and see if he pulls of a "Shyamalan." Remember when Shyamalan was a revolutionary young director? His first big picture got him nominated for best director, and The Crappening has shown us a much different side of him, as did Lady in the Water. Let's just wait for the second boarding of the Zach Snyder hype train to see how good he really is. After Watchmen, of course. :)
  • Gordon
    Shyamalan's problem isn't that he's a bad director. He's a very good one. He's just a terrible, terrible writer.
  • Yeah and Snyder generally has a writing partner I think, I may be wrong but thats the case of Sucker Punch. I do not see that happening at all. Everything we have heard about Watchmen indicates its awesomeness. So he will be 3 for 3. Plus Shymalan, while I am not a hater, really needs a reality check and someone's gotta tell him his writing is shit now. I
  • Also, you're forgetting that Synder is already 2/2 with 300 and Dawn of the Dead and possibly 3/3 with Watchmen. Where 300 and Dawn of the Dead weren't absolutely perfect movies, they were both pretty good. Also, Snyder has yet to direct a story that is fully his own work. I think what you are referring to is the his ability as a writer/director. If that is the case, I would say that Sucker Punch would be his first real test.
  • Joey
I see good points in all of your comments. I'm just stating that we shouldn't hold our breaths. I loved The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs, but the rest was any where between "meh" and 'God please kill me' unwatchable. I mean, George Lucas got nominated for best director and best picture for his first real big hit, Star Wars, and while the prequal trilogy was fun for me, most hated it, and I admit it didn't feel the same. Snyder is 2/2 so far (waiting for 3/3 next week) , he's getting trusted with big projects at the begining of his carrer, and God knows I want to see DKR on film. We should just proceed with caution, because we have all been burned with something like this before. But I do hope that Snyder gets even better with experiance, and never stops amazing us.
  • roshow
If that happened it would be the first Batman movie I wouldn't be excited to see and thus my entire world would crumble (I was a kid when B&R came out so I didn't know enough back then to cry). So please... no. I don't want to see Batman jumping in slo-mo for 3/4 of the movie
  • Andy
Only ONE of Snyder's three films is slow-mo heavy. Dawn of the Dead doesn't use speed ramping and Watchmen doesn't appear to use it a great deal (other than in action sequences, which are very few), so only 300 used slow-mo to service the comic book action. It's no worse a crime than shakycam, at least you can tell what the fuck is going on with speed ramping.
  • Roger
I dont think Snyder would do a Batman movie, it woyuld be nice to see but highly unlikely. What would be interesting to see is Snyder doing a Batman Beyond movie. Just a Batman Beyond movie would be awesome. I mean some changes would have to happen i.e the suit and what not, but it already has a fresh story. Hopefully its something to watch in the future.
  • I know for sure I would watch this movie but am not sure if it would be on the level of Nolan's Batman films. Snyder knows how to make a good movie and this would be no different but I agree with whoever said that it's too soon to do this project.
  • Why is this project so unlikely? If Watchman is a hit there is no reason this doesn't get greenlit.
  • Ask Murdera
I think you're now required by law to describe Zack Snyder as "Visionary Director Zack Snyder"...
  • Joey
Got it. Ok Joey, you can do this. "Visionary Director Chistopher Nolan" That wasn't too hard. Naw, I jest. I do like Snyder. But if he screwed up Watchmen, look for his obituary in the papers. >:)
  • we don't even know if The Watchmen is any good.
  • oh man now he is just getting cocky.
  • Snarky Bastard
"Cocky"? For what? Answering a stupid question that some fanboy idiot asked him?

For the record, I haaaaaated 300, so it's not like I'm defending him on this because I like the guy's work.
  • GoreBaby
Why will this never happen? Batman superman fight.

Would I love to see this as a film? Fucking yes.

THIS is MY watchmen. God I can only dream...
  • i think it would too confusing for casual audiences for the project to ever really happen. it's an elseworld's story, it has nothing to do with batman as most people know him.

honestly, look at the coniption fit casual movie goers have over sam jackson as nick fury. they vaguely remember nick fury as an old white man, so why they hell is some middle aged bald black guy playing him?!? then you try to explain the distinctions of ultimate marvel books vs. the 616 counter parts and for the most part (at least in my experience anyway) their heads explode.

imagine that times a billion. literally, the billion dollars that the dark knight made, and then the collective "WTF?!?" from the general movie going masses at seeing this weird-old bruce wayne, when they're used to christian bale.

they might accept someone like matt damon taking over the role, but sylvester stallone? yeah, never happen.

i'd love to see it as a dc animated film though. justice league: the new frontier has similar problems as a live action feature, but works great as an animated dvd
  • Well, everyone was to stunned to think about the Jackson thing. And it's not like Fury is exactly popular. Hell, I'm not sure people at first even understood the Avenger thing.
  • Ben1
Can I just state that Zack Snyder actually seems like a nice guy and I dont think he's ever referred to himself as a visionary.
  • BATMAN BEYOND!!! I would just love that...maybe one day...
  • frj
    This would be awesome.
  • frj
    Absolutely freakin' awesome.
  • Would it include the whole superman plot? This could be interesting actually, I'd like to see the whole neon arcade mutant style side of gotham the book portrays and I actually would not mind the inclusion of the female robin...but let's finish Nolan's masterpiece off before we get ahead of ourselves
  • Dollars and cents
Wouldn't this destroy the whole Superman franchise? Doesn't Supes come off as the ultimate d*bag in this comic? I don't think WB wants to destroy their #2 superhero franchise. $$$
  • Brian
Would be great, but feel like i'd rather see Rodriguez helm it..
  • actually..thats a nice idea too
