jackson

Here’s a bedtime story about, amongst other things, economies of scale.

After appearing in the post credits geek-tease on Iron Man, Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury was slated for a bigger, better showing in the next installment. Seemed like a sure thing, until Jackson himself cast the assumption into doubt. Other stories started surfacing about cost-cutting or, at the very least, an unexpected sense of budgetary pragmatism in the Marvel movie bursary (Don Cheadle in, Terrence Howard out, Mickey Rourke in, out, in, out and shake it all about). Our collective popcorn dreams of more Samuel-powered Fury seemed to be a burst bubble…

Not any more. The Hollywood Reporter are telling us that Jackson has been signed for appearances in nine more Marvel motion pictures - including Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, possible sequels to these and, perhaps most interestingly of all, the lead in their in-development S.H.I.E.L.D movie.

Samuel L. Jackson really does have better things to do than spend nine times the typical tentpole schedule mucking about in an eye patch, but by keeping eight of these appearances down to managable cameos, or so I’d assume, he at once gets to keep his integrity, his comic book cred, and blank pages in his planner for more exciting things.

And, I hope, a reasonable slice of greenbacked recompense.

There’s mild intrigue in the list of films we can expect to see Fury cropping up in. Appearances in Thor and Captain America pretty much confirm that previously rumored directions for the projects - being Valhalla bound and period set respectively - are now scrapped in favor of cross-over-tastic contemporary settings.

Getting Jackson to ink for all nine pictures now means Marvel can offer him a decent enough payday with the promise of repeated returns on this investment in the future. The only risk is the off chance we all fall out of love with Jackson - maybe if he’s caught plying kids with Jesus Juice or burying a body in the woods this might happen, but other than that: fat chance.

  • First he was in Star Wars, now he's in a bunch of comic book movies. Mr. Jackson, you have won the Badass Geek Award of the Year (kinda deragatory, isn't it)
  • Goood news, everyone! {in best Professor Farnsworth voice}.

I tip my hat in Mr Jackson's general direction. What a nice man.
  • Eric R.
    Professor Farnsworth...lmao...that is classic!!!
  • Woohoo! Almost as good to hear the Arrested Development movie moving forward... almost.
  • Woohoo! Almost as good to hear as the Arrested Development movie moving forward... almost.
  • not even close to AD. but still GREAT! news
  • lol. No, not really.
  • benji just ran off a cliff.
  • WHAT COUNTRY
Hopefully they are mostly cameos. I take this guy yelling (acting?) anymore.
  • Dude, if Sam Jackson killed a man, I doubt even that would cause him to lose his geek cred. That man is untouchable!
  • jason B
sam jackson is not the nick fury i've spent nearly 20 years reading about. and in recent years he has become a parody of himself, let alone a superhero. i cringe at the contrived 'cool moments/lines' that will inevitably find their way into the upcoming scripts. this sucks.
  • Ultimate Nick Fury, motherhubbard.

Based on Sam Jackson and, when adapted for the big screen, played by/written for Sam Jackson.
  • this sh*t sucks
Make Nick Cage white then, any objections to that?
  • Tim Drake
Marvel made the Ultimate Universe about 9-10 years ago. In this Universe, Nick Fury looks just like Sam L Jackson (they even asked him if they could use his likeness for the character.)

Just because Nick Fury is slated to appear in Captain America doesn't mean that it will be in modern time, Ultimate Nick Fury was a WW2 solider and was actually a test subject of the super-solider serum that created the Steve Rogers Captain America. That's why he is still alive and young looking in modern times.
Read Ultimate Origins to understand more of how Marvel might shape their Movie-verse.

Most elements from the films are in continuity with the Ultimate Marvel Universe.
  • Fall out of love with Jackson? Never! All he has to do is say 'motherf**ker' in his cool, bad-ass voice and he's always forgiven in my mind (after all, we all have to bury somebody in the words every once in a while...). On the article, it would be hilarious if eight of his potential cameo's all came after the film had finished like in 'Iron Man'. :D
  • "I am Thor. You really don't know what your getting into do you Muthafucka?""
  • Ok, yes. His Fury is going to be different, sure. But I think it's time for a new iteration. Straight translation isn't always the way to go, and I think he will fit nicely into the on-screen Marvel world set up by Incredible Hulk and Iron Man.
  • Phil Chung
I just want EVERYONE to be aware of this..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Nick_Fury
  • Aware of what? His wikipedia page?
  • Whoo! Glad to hear it's all worked out and Sam is sticking around.
  • Brian from OR
Oh thank god! Now I can erase the memory of him has the Octopus from my memory.
    Octopus Never, Fury Forever
  • He is honestly trying to set a record for most movie appearances. Actually, he probably holds it. Anyone know?
  • And Sam Jackson continues his goal to be in every movie ever made...and I'm not complaining.
  • Gemaine
Geek correction: The Captain America movie could totally still be period set because Fury had his Howling Commandos in WWII! Maybe we'll even see how he got the eyepatch in the Cap movie?
  • jobless
as long as it doesnt sound like he is yelling the whole time i'll be happy.
  • Genziel
If memory serves Captain America gets frozen in an iceberg, or something to that effect, and then is found later. Why can Nick Fury's cameo not be the finding of the iceberg however many years later?
  • Gemaine
Actually, in the Ultimates (where we see the Jackson version of Fury in the comics) he does find him in the ice, could totally work!
  • Fartie Lange
actually i think Eskimos's find him. the U.S. just takes him
  • Conor Barkley
pretty much confirms he will go down in history has the highest grossing actor.
  • Yes, but Brendon doesn't bother to do the research for that! Instead, he just assumes it will automatically be a crossover! Great job!
  • In what way is that NOT a crossover?
  • Marvel CEO : Uh Mr Jackson we would like you at least appear in 9 more Marvel movies
Sam Jackson: Get that mutha fucking money in my mutha fucking hand!!!!
  • filmkid
this is great news everyone should know that Sam Jackson love to do movies doesnt matter if its mainstream movies or low budget movies he always said he love his work.

also if people still going to complain about why Nick Fury is black they should start checking the Ultimate Nick Fury and who its based on. actually let me tell you who its based on. its Motherf-ing. . . . "SAMUEL L. JACKSON".
  • this is a great big step in the right direction for the next string of movies.

i would like to see them continue that momentum with the casting of Ironman 2 and Thor. There is still a lot of room for error, but these guys deserve a pat on the back for locking up Jackson.
  • Ben
How much do you want to bet that this deal came about when they told Mr. Jackson they'd develop a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie for him?
  • Justin
He probably wants to follow in the footsteps of the great David Hasselhoff and be Nick Fury in a shield Movie lol anyone see that big pile of crap!!
  • Finally Iron Man 2 has some good news. I hope this is the beginning of good things for Marvel, maybe next month we get a Thor casting and filming will start for Iron Man 2 sometime soon.
  • i'm totally down for 9 cameo or semi bigger roles for nick fury....
  • This is a good way to tie the movies together without having a continuity/crossover effect that discourages new viewers.
  • Sam Jackson can totally pull-off Nick Fury. Just watch Pulp Fiction again and all of your doubts will slip-slide away. That said, Clive Owen could have made a great Nick Fury, too.
  • gah
AWESOME. Now finish up that MIckey Rourke deal and we're set.
  • I'm curious to see how Nick Fury will be integrated in the Thor movie. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Thor only become associated with Nick Fury when the Avengers are brought together? So wouldn't a Thor movie be associated more towards his banishment from Asgard and the battle with his brother, Loki?
  • MDF
I'm curious too. But I think it's the same as the Captain America movie - Nick Fury will swoop in at the end to talk Avengers. You can still have the whole movie set in Asgard (or the past in CA's case) and have a bit of Sam Jackson action at the end. After all, these are nine "appearances", not substantial roles.
  • Ah i didn't think of it that way. You're right he could just have some sort of cameo role. I think he'll have to play a pretty big role towards the end of the CA movie though, that way they can lead straight into an Avengers movie. I doubt the Thor movie will be entirely in Asgard though, I think they're going to have to bring it to Earth pretty quickly due to time constraints.
  • JKW
I find it insulting that you'd say Sam Jackson burying in the woods might make us fall out of love with him. If I ever catch him digging a giant hole to fill with a garbage bag that has legs sticking out of it, I'd legitimately j*** in my pants.
  • Ben
If they are going with the whole Ultimate thing could Spider-man 4 and 5 be possible spots for him? Fury is pretty involved in the Ultimate Spider-man comics
  • SPIDERMAN
spiderman 4 and 5 as tie- in movies would launch marvel to new heights, if they really want this whole superhero thing to suceed i suggest they go through with what "ben" had suggested
  • K-Man
    Josh Brolin should be Fury
  • I think Sam's a little old to play the WW2 era Fury, isn't he?
  • depends on how they have him 'age' in the movieverse...google 'infinity formula'

and it's asgard, not valhalla ;)
