(And Of Course) The NeverEnding Story Gets a Remake

image099

We may have solved what “The Nothing” is once and for all:  why, it’s the insatiable trend of Hollywood remakes. The sparkly 1984 children’s fantasy film, The NeverEnding Story, has been dusted off at Warner Bros. though screenwriters and a director are not currently attached. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way has taken interest in the material. The original film was adapted by director Wolfgang Petersen from the German fantasy novel, Die unendliche Geschichte, and is best remembered for a weird, snow white dog-dragon named Falkor that is ridden upon by a warrior boy (as seen above) through many a bong cloud.

According to the trades, the remake will will “examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first pic.” Which, I guess translates into attempting to actually fulfilling the franchise’s title this time around. A theatrical sequel to the original film was directed by George Trumbull Miller (Cybermutt) and released in 1990—you may recall all the jokes that resulted—but didn’t fare so well at the box office. 1994 saw yet another sequel but it wasn’t released stateside until two years after it originally hit Germany.

Some of the dudes at Film School Rejects seem to be getting huffy about the announcement on Twitter—there’s talk about kicking kittens—but I’m not picking this battle, especially considering that we all got nailed with a twofer tonight. (See the next post.) However, if you are so inclined to drive off a cliff, why not purchase the Neverending Story party van that we featured last week? I haven’t been mildy obsessed with these movies since I was extremely obsessed with Labyrinth-era David Bowie and M.C. Escher’s artworks i.e. a long time ago. However, there were epic stakes, epic scale and an anything goes play on imagination and special effects that we don’t see much from children’s films anymore. And that giant rock dude who rocked.

Discuss: Where does it end?

  • Ugh, why? The original is still fun. but I'm not going to get too worked up about this. Also does DiCaprio's company do any original movies, first Akira and now this.
  • Right there with you. I want there to be a law that states no one can remake a film unless it is a minimum of 100 years old.
  • (and of course) - i love that.

do we have a shortage of writers? where the hell has the creativity gone?
  • No, the writers are eating Ramen and soup like everyone else.
  • i am a struggling screenwriter... I know other screenwriters in L.A and they are always telling me that studios just don't want to pay money to buy fresh, original screenplays.

fuck Hollywood and fuck their studio system. Indie filmmaking is where it's at.

I agree, I'm not going to get to worked up about this. If they plan to remake this, I rather see it animated.
  • There actually was an animated tv series back in the ninties though it was short lived. I imagine this one would be special effects heavy
  • I give it 2 more years before we hear about a "Back to the Future" reboot.
  • Ouch, lets hope that never happens,
  • oh it'll happen and he can't stop the studio from remaking it.
  • doc
reboots? where we're going we dont need reboots.
  • "Where will it end?"
With a Godfather remake starring Shia Labeouf.
  • Damn you Black heart! That wasn't part of the deal!
  • Palmer
Hmmm...I wonder if it will come to a point where we hear news about a remake every day.
  • Movie studios, I'd like to introduce you to Dets. Benson and Stabler. They're here to perform a DNA test, because you've just raped my childhood.
  • Layalally
Kip--If you'd read it, you'd know how much the original movie raped the book! Seriously, I love the old film and it's the whole reason I read the book to begin with but it's a pale shadow of its source material. Michael Ende, the author, actually disowned it. If this new adaptation actually happens, I hope it will be a faithful retelling of the book. It won't affect my love for the old film, it will just be something completely different. It also won't cause the old film to disappear from existence thereby forcing all of its fans to watch the new one. Everybody needs to quit whining. Nobody's childhood is getting raped.
  • Total Recall remake was announced as well :/
  • Yeah Alex Billington announced that. Thats something I really wish they wouldn't do. Total Recall is just an awesome cheesy B Sci Fi movie. I don't care that much about A Never Ending Story remake, I don't think a remake is needed but I just don't mind because I never loved it.... But yeah they should leave Total Recall alone.
  • Some movies just don't need a remake - show this movie to a kid today, and even though the effects aren't the same standard or technique they are used to seeing - they will (and i've seen it, DO) love great films like this.

I worry that they will try to insert flashy computer generated images and lose sight of the soul of this story.

I feel sorry for this generation that isn't exposed to anything original, and the parents eat it up b/c they are purchasing nostalgia.

    Sorry, not into this remake...
  • Back then, since special effects wasn't as good as todays, BUT they instead injected the script with SOUL and HEART, which makes for a good movie. SOUL and HEART..something that lacks in today's movies.
  • Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
  • Oh hell no. I will straight murder whoever green-lights this. Leave my childhood alone! Please!
  • This is killing me, actually. The first one was magical.

Wait until they remake The PRincess Bride. I'll give Hollywood hell.
  • Dude why? Now I'm gonna have nightmares.
  • Oh God. That IS what's going to happen next, I bet. I weep for the future.
  • JP Dyno
Doesnt need a remake, but whatever. Ive grown to just accept that hollywood will do these horrible things. Same goes for total recall.

Speaking of hollywood digging into our childhood for movie ideas, What the hell is going on with the dark crystal sequel?
  • I think Robert Zemechis owns it, and I think he said that it will never happen.
  • Terror Australis
This is the worst thing to happen to the film since my class action lawsuit against it for false advertisement ;)
  • Rena
They just don't know what they're doing. I'm sending enviro-boy an angry letter
  • adult bastian!
  • I just hope this will remain in development hell.
  • My g/f and I also feel like some kitten kicking... maybe some baby punching while we're at it!!!!

The remakes need to stop. I can understand some older flicks getting redone, but not movies that a lot of us grew up with and remember quite well.

A lot of the reasoning behind remakes lately is CGI, well I say crap on that. The on-set visuals created for movies like this in the 70's and 80's MADE those movies what they are.
  • I vaporized with this film the other week and even though I respect its integrity, a remake could be wonderful, despite being VERY unnecessary.
  • I agree, it wont be a huge success, however it will be a fun film to watch.
  • filmkid
next we will get an The Goonies and Flight of the Navigator remake
  • The George Miller who directed the unbelievably terrible NeverEnding Story II is not the same George Miller who made Mad Max and Babe. Easy to tell them apart: one is an excellent director, and the other is the director of NeverEnding Story II.
  • Now with THIS I consider my childhood officially raped. This is my favorite book, one of my favorite movies, and I will not tolerate a remake.

At this rate, there will be a point when we see remakes of movies originally released the previous year. Or even so, movies released in march, with the remake done as a summer blockbuster in the same year.

TO WARNER, APPIAN & KENNEDY MAESHALL:

YOU BETTER DO EVERYTHING CLOSE TO THE BOOK AS POSSIBLE!

    - GREEN ATRÉJU
    - FAT BOY BASTIAN
    - MICHAEL ENDE´S PHILOSOPHY STUFF
    - AND CGI ONLY WHEN NECESSARY! LIKE PETER JACKSON BALANCE OF IT IN LORD OF THE RINGS!

    A FAN.
  • And rainbow sand lions! As much as I adore the original film, and I do, it was only about half of the book. That being said, do over time! But stick to physical effects please. It makes a film much warmer, like vinyl to music.
  • Marko
Does this mean that one guy is going to have to repaint his van?
  • REAL6
    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THey are over a million books out there. Why cant these fuckheads stop remaking and just make a movie from a book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There are two Australian directors named George Miller. One is Dr. George Miller who directed the Mad Max series, Babe 2 (he didn't direct Babe 1 as mentioned above, that was directed by Chris Noonan. George Produced the first one), The Witches of Eastwick etc.

The other George Miller directed Neverending Story 2 plus other quality films including A Mom for Christmas, Cybermutt, Les Patterson Saves the World.
  • yeah, this is the stupid EMO GENERATION who have no stories of their own... hahahaha
  • Anonimo
U got something against emos? Cant believe that. Thats discrimination. But yes, ur in the back of a computer and u say whatever ur mind thinks and writes down. Is not an emo generation, is a technological generation 21 century, ok? We lived long and now that we are getting old, others diserve to watch it new and fresh. But yes, I agree with others about it. Movies that are original, SHOULD NEVER GET A REMAKE! It just damaged it.
  • boo hoo, get over yourself, emo boy.
  • this is such goddamned bullshit. Theyr'e remaking everything and now they're remaking the 80s? What the FUCK, Hollywood assholes? Those executives need to be punched real hard in the face, then in the dick. fucking cunts.
  • This will only work if Seth Rogen plays Falkor. Not just the voice, but the actual imagery also. Just imagine Seth Rogen flying through the sky with some kid on his back.
  • That comment was TOO funny...I mean a Rogen Falkor is so awesome sounding...
  • This is one of those movies you can't remake. It gains classicness by the corny affects and costumes. Don't do t his.
